42 May 15th, 2015 RATINGS: All Soaps Gain In Total Viewers Except DAYS Down, But Expectations Are High NBC Soap Will Rebound For 50th!

Courtesy/NBC

The ratings are out for one of the key weeks of May Sweeps 2015 for the week of episodes airing May 4th through the 8th.

General Hospital and The Young and the Restless scored best, gaining in total viewers, while also showing gains in the key women 18-49 demo.  But for GH, even though they showed gains in the that key demo, they still unfortunately hit their all-time low in the demo rating share for the third week in a row.

The total audience gains for the week, while not off the charts impressive was good news.  The ratings revealed gains in total viewers of +80,000 for The Bold and the Beautiful and Y&R, and +79,00o for GH.

However for NBC Days of our Lives, the show still struggles and was the lone soap to lose viewers losing -71, 000 for the ratings week.   Additionally, the show that is set to turn 50 was down -203.000 from the previous year.  In addition, in all key demos DAYS was in the minus column as well.

While viewers have to wait a through summer for the new stories to kick-in from new head writers Dena Higley and Josh Griffith, reports and expectations are high that the series will have a major ratings spike when all the returns begin on-screen for it’s 50th anniversary milestone and beyond. The exciting returns include:  Stephen Nichols (Patch), Thaao Penghlis (Tony/Andre?), and Peter Reckell (Bo), coupled with lots of anticipated new arrivals including: A Martinez and more!

What are your thoughts on the latest ratings?  Do you think DAYS will be on the right track with rumored exciting story and their returns? Will it have a major rebound?  Are General Hospital, The Young and the Restless, and The Bold and the Beautiful delivering big time during this May Sweeps? What soap is keeping you interested the most?  Share your thoughts below!

DAYS was trending up in the ratings the last couple weeks, which included all demos. However, those ratings weren’t reported on this site…I wonder why?

All the soaps will yo-yo in the ratings and eventually DAYS will trend up for several months in celebration of it’s 50 years!!!!!

Be afraid, be very afraid haters!

Of course Days will go up with the guests appearances for the 50th but will it be old viewers checking in to see old favorites and will they stay once their favorites leave. Days lost its greatness during the Jim Reily years and never recovered. If Days new writers dont change things around other than depending on guests appearances by old favs the ratings will go down to cancellationville. You need to wake up and smell the coffee. There is good reason the show remains in 4th place.

Wally Kurth (Justin), Judi Evans (Adrienne) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) are not guests. They are on contract. Thaao Penglis (Tony/Andre) will not be a guest. He was put on contract. The status of Peter Reckell (Bo) and Stephen Nichols (Steve) was not disclosed, but I’m sure they’ll be on for at least 6 months…clearly not guests.

I am awake. DAYS has already made vast improvements. The ratings system is outdated. That’s why a soap such as Y&R can continue being high rated when it’s crap stinks just as much (if not more) than the other soaps. You wake up!

I gave up on “Days of Our Lives” around 1989/1990 when it started becoming trashy. Never looked back.

Made the sane move and started watching ABC soaps instead.

DAYS has a great mix of trashy and classy, but it’s OK for you to like cartoony. Occasionally, I like obsurd cartoonish stories too!

530,000 is horrible for GH in women. GH ratings were not all of that for a reveal week. I was expecting at least 3 million

3 of the 4 soaps are down for the year in Women 18-49, why single out GH? It seems to be a trend across the entire industry, as opposed to one particular soap. GH came very close to 3 million early in the week when the Nurses Ball was in full swing. Would have liked to see them hit the 3 million mark again, but a gain period is a good thing, in my view.

GH was a HUGE disappointment for the NB!!! NO Stone Mention!!! And NO Robin!!!! The NB 94- 2001 was held in June. They could have waited for Kimberly to return. They should have done a best of the NB 94-2001 starting with Stone and Robin- Romeo and Juliet… and a montage to show what the NB was all about. It was 20 years since Stone passed away. And where was half the town?!?! Sonny, Monica, Bobbie, Tracy, Scott, Kevin, Lesley, etc…
RC is backburning characters again for BIG EVENTS HUGE mistake!!!!
Sabrina was in more acts and she is not even a practicing nurse anymore….. she is a Nanny!!! It has turned more about the person who revived the NB …. smh… GH is becoming unrecognizable ….Think I will be tuning out with Tony Leaves. I started watching over 43+ years ago….. I miss GH!!!

    KansasGuest replied

I know it’s a nostalgic event. But, IMO, the actual Nurses Ball is probably a snoozefest for most viewers. Without some “star” acts (like Rick Springfield or Jack Wagner), many people would rather wait until the weekend to fast forward thru amateur hour & hit the meaty scenes. That results in lower live ratings. Maybe it’s just me. But, the highlight this year was watching Britt reunite with Brad. They were the two most joyful characters in the entire storyline. If GH stays on the air, they need to do the NB every OTHER year IMO.

Sadly, the ratings info (and how it is collated) is antiquated and sends the entirely wrong message to storytellers like Pratt over on #YR. (All he needs is this sort of weak positive enforcement to feel justified in his methodic crucification of a 42-yr old ground-breaking serial. Don’t be surprised if he feels now justified in penning some sort of massacre at Crimson Lights or blowing-up Newman Towers!) It’s all flash-and-gore with that one; qualified talented visionaries like the late Bill Bell, Douglas Marland and James E. Reilly musty be rolling in their gaves seeing what this hack is being allowed to pass-off as daytime drama! (Send him back to primetime where he belongs!)

Completely agree with you Geoffrey. The Nielsen ratings are not generalizable. Would love to see a renaissance of the daytime dramas… perhaps a network will hire a popular novel writers who pens great serial characters and settings.

Days of our Lives is nice, but boring. The sets are very outdated and extremely limited, and I can’t stand that fake leaf park set used for every other scene (or so it seems anyway). The storylines need some help, this nonsense right now of Marlena being threatened to be thrown out the window in Italy is so absurd. Showing the clip of her possession from the 90′s was kind of silly. Honestly, they do need to come up with some compelling storylines and please please PLEASE get some new sets. I know it’s a soap, I know there are budgets, and I think the years of soaps actually going on location are long over, but they still need to come up with something. Otherwise, the sand may just run out soon…..

Days Of Our Lives will not get renewed next year. The soap is so boring now, I fast forward the boring scenes lol. I love the gay storyline. that’s it. Kassie depaiva is not Eve, I am sorry but that’s how I feel. Charlotte Ross rocked it as Eve Donovan. Kassie was terrific as Blair Kramer, but miscast as Eve Donovan.

I realize that all soaps have limited sets, although in the 90′s soap sets were far more extensive and creative over at ABC for shows such as “all my children”. They occasionally went outdoors for certain scenes, as opposed to the current Days of Our Lives, where everyone is thinking out loud in the Fake Leaf indoor park set. How they won an award for that….

Even with some criticism Y&R is still doing great, well in front in the demos. Days is bad ,but I have hope for the fall with the 50th I guess the Nurses Ball didn’t help GH,they are having an awful season in the young demos. GH is aging rapidly. They have been at demo lows for months now

Shocked that #YR was up with one of Pratt’s worst weeks in storytelling.

Also shocked that the nurses ball didn’t do more for GH. Maybe it’s time to wrap that up.

    GH is doing well-
    This the only rating the sponsors pay attention to;
is the key women 18-49 demo, GH does well..
    and-
    Y&R and B&B gained +80,000
    GH gained +79.000
    All is well …

I think DOOL will pick up during and after its’ 50th ..

Everyone thinks the answer is to bring on a bunch of teenagers/twentysomethings and vets – NO! Write compelling stories that include the young and old(er). Soaps were once about family and there was a hero/heroine to root for. We had couples that grew into super couples and it didn’t happen over one or two episodes or a morth. I understand the soaps are desperate and last ditch efforts are now the norm. But, they need to check their history and steal from what worked. Also, bring on writers and executive producers who are creative and have a vision for the future. Taking crap and throwing it against the wall to see if it sticks, no longer works.

I have watched DOOlL since the days of Roman sleeping on Marlena’s floor. I have to agree that about the comments about the sets. Can we have the peer back? Marlena house, which later was Abe and Lexie’s?

I want to see more character development. Eve, Theresa, Clyde are cardboard villains. Let us know why they are so bad and allow them to have some redeeming characters. As soon as Theresa found out her baby was alive, the character could have turned a corner and made us start cheering that she would get back with Brady. But, she still seems too self absorbed.

The one character that baffles me in Melanie. If she is going to be paired with an older man (her dad’s best friend), why does she talk in that little girl voice and look stoned when she is delivering her lines. She could have had a great storyline with Chad and Abigail.

Can the writers give Jennifer a new love interest? I am so tired of Daniel, Eric and Brady trading women. This does not happen among friends.

There is so much dead weight on the show. The writers need to give us relatable stories. I have said before that I would like to see Hope or Marlena be diagnosed with breast cancer. I would like to see Nicole have some family in Salem. She continues to be one of the best assets on the show. Make her family a core part of the landscape.

I read today that Claire is being aged to a 15 year old. I do not like the idea that Hope is going to be a grandmother to a teenager when Ciara is only eight or nine years old.

I am excited Thaao, Peter and Stephen are coming back. I am not sure if it is long-term, but if not, bring back Chloe, Phillip, Mimi, Shawn and Phillip. That 30-something age is missing on the show.

The writers need to give Eric a pulse. Greg Vaughn is a powerhouse actor. His acting on GH during the drug addiction storyline was amazing.

I can’t wait to see Serena leave the show. Horribly boring character.

Why has Abe and Maxie been forgotten?

Can we have another town disaster and it kill off all of the boring characters?

Ah, Ray….why can’t I have expressed what you just did. My sentiments, exactly.
How well you have pinpointed Melanie made me do a double-take. That’s it! She looks like she in another dimension. I couldn’t put my finger on it. Nonetheless, I have always liked her.
As yourself, I am so sick of these three men and their stupid drama. The most boring trio ever.
And, Nicole. Just let it go…writers please, why do you always have her embroiled in silly things that end up proving naught, except getting her in a constant heap of trouble.

Theresa is my favorite. She’s kind of nuts, but funny nuts. I’s like to see her in more scenes with Anne. Together, they could start a comedy team. But, yeah, you are right. This is the one moment for Theresa to use this gift of time which fell on her lap and take advantage of it. As a Mom, it is the perfect opportunity to turn a new leaf in her warped view on life.

Eric is a dummy…..he still hasn’t learned his lesson. Again, you are correct. He is one of the best, but the writers turned him into a teen-ager, in the throes of first love, and, tripping over his own two feet .

And the week before that was a big jump in ratings. I believe it is to give the false impression that DAYS only goes down. Y&R went down more than 300,000 last report, but it wasn’t mentioned here. When GH goes down…not a peep here. Picking and choosing what weeks ratings are featured is flat out unfair.

I do believe they are doing all possible to bring DOOL back up, it is more than obvious they are doing everything possible, there is budget they have to work with but the effort they are making to bring it up is noticeable, just by my reading of it, seems they are trying..
I believe DOOL will have a great comeback !

Yes, you are correct, 4ever. But, July still seems odd for sweeps IMO, considering it’s prime vacation time when everyone’s viewing schedule is interrupted for travelling. It would be like having sweeps over the Christmas/New Year break.
