42 February 8th, 2016 RATINGS: GH and B&B Show Gains In 18-49 Demo, But All Soaps Slip In Total Viewers

Courtesy/ABC

The ratings are out for the last week of January (25-29).  And overall, the four networks soaps slipped in total viewers with The Young and the Restless and Days of our Lives losing the most. However, both are still well ahead of pace at where they were last year at this time.

The interesting news comes in the key womens 18-49 demo where General Hospital gained the most viewers for the week with +49,000, making it the highest amount of viewers in that category for the head writing regime of Jean Passanante and Shelly Altman.

The regime also scored a high for the 18-49  ratings share, and GH was the only one of the four network daytime dramas to show an increase in viewers in the womens 25-54 demo.  As compared to the other three soaps for the ratings week, GH lost the least total viewers.

Additionally, The Bold and the Beautiful also showed gains in the 18-49 demo with +19,000.  You can view the entire ratings picture via SON here.

Numbers are based on Live+Same Day ratings

3. GH 3,060,000 (-71,000/+73,000)

    GENERAL Hospital STAT !

did it seem like; as Jason was carrying Sam in to the emergency room at hospital…. when he was telling medics her stats…..

DID HIS MEMORY RETURN with that big kaboom ! at Liz HOUSE ?

    just saying

or lordy… don’t even get me started with how bad Kelly Monaco acting is…

her fantastical visions apparitions oy! “I knew you would come for me”

    it was all so… cloy; bubblegum;

is this all it takes for the whole world to pull asunder…. ??? Jason and Sam takeover?

    CeeCee replied

Lol, Patrick. Had the words ( in Sam’s case mumbled words) come from someone else, they would have held more credence. I agree…. that bland, unfeeling acting left me wanting more.
What truly struck a discordant note with me was, “oh, my dad is going to blame you, Jason…” , or whatever it was she told Jason. Then, Alexis is all bent out of shape because she is sure a ‘criminal’ such as Jason must have hurt her daughter somehow.
From what planet do these people hail? Seriously? Alexis has been changing hands from one mobster to another….she actually lives with one; has had children with mobsters, and now she pulls her lackluster, dented, rusty halo from the bottom of her bag of tricks?
One redemption for Sam. As I have said before, I think Sam is honest. I knew she was going to tell the truth. I just wasn’t sure if she would remember how she fell because of the concussion.
I know Liz deserves her just desserts…karma and all that….many were waiting for her comeuppance, including myself; but, boy, Patrick….I felt so badly for her. Her desperate tears and the wretched look on her face when she eyed her burned house, just tore at my heartstrings.
    Later.

Thanks for posting the ratings, Michael.

General Hospital is on fire right now and the proof is in the numbers! Jean and Shelly are getting the job done as headwriters.

Five weeks in a row of over three million viewers! The first time that’s happened in this current decade. Ron was pulling in about 2.5-2.6 million viewers a week on the average during his final four months.

Demo numbers in the 18-49 nearing close to 600K! A new high for Jean/Shelly since they took over in October. We are far removed from those mid to low 400K numbers that Ron was pulling in on the average during his final four months which lead to 18 weeks of lows.

The only soap to gain viewers in the 18-34 and 25-54 demos and a jump to second place in the 18-34.

GH is up from last year in overall viewers as well as 18-49 and 18-34 demos.

The first week of Feb Sweeps should be good when the ratings are released. GH had two great Friday cliffhangers to close out Jan with the Kristina/Parker twist and Sam/Jake in the basement.

PRATT is losing steam again, His few weeks of Great Gains have gone by The wayside. The Demos are terrible, I’m shocked they had the 3 days above 5 mill then sliped again by the end of the week.

Y&R has been terrible so there is no mystery as to why they lost viewers. Think about it, who has been on screen this past week. Marisa and Lucas suck! Noah, who just isnt ready for a corporate story. I like the kid but he just seems lost when he is in scenes with heavyweights like Billy, Victoria, Adam and Chelsea. Cane is so weak and Lilly is such a hypocrite! The new computer geek girl is annoying! What story is really worth tuning into now?

    chuck replied

Exactly!! The show it’s self has lost it’s voice, PRATT isn’t cutting the mustard anymore.

IMO, he never did – his so-called HW tenure has produced nothing but tediously rehashed, plot-driven (yet convoluted) bottom-of-the-barrel stories.

What this show is currently lacking is creativity – how about a creative Executive Producer?!?

    su0000 replied

    OK
I will send Jean and Shelly back to Y&R for you guys! :)

    CeeCee replied

Oh, Timmm, but Noah is gaining steam…LOL. is this the new, improved Noah we are seeing? Poor guy! He is trying so hard to be a Victor-type Newman. I am a little confused….what are TPTB doing? Noah, the toughie, is not palatable….not believable. And, for this, I feel sorry for him.
Is Adam taking the back seat, now? Has he tucked his tail between his legs. What happened to his thirst for revenge against his father? I liked it better when there existed a certain amount of antagonism between them. It did create drama. This soap is so adding for dome drama. Where is this going?
All I know, I can’t stand Luca and his cat-that-ate-the-canary attitude any more.
Sorry, for the rant, my Timmm. Luv-ya.
    PS
I am actually looking forward to a Patty storyline, in the hopes that it will lead to Christian!

    ….so lacking for some drama

    Timmm replied

Either Noah will go to far and his life will hang in peril OR he will conquer Luca and make Grandpa Mustache VERY proud!

  4. Jonboy says:

As it should be. I watch YnR & GH daily and the ratings are understandable.

  5. Timmm says:

Why did GH gain women viewers? Well, like them or not su0000, Jean and Shelly are writing stories with more heart and trying to bring more love in certain characters lives. AND, with the sexy Griffin in town now, the girls got some eye candy AND another reason to actually focus on the HOSPITAL! Women generally like Liz and we all love Robert and Anna on the screen! RATINGS UP!

Its simple, Billy was lying on the ground beaten to “Death!” All Noah had to do was explain that he didnt know what was under his car, apologize and move on! Its not like Billy ran out in front of him and Noah kept going or his was DUI and was covering that up!

Timm, I totally agree with you.

Thanks Lew. I love Y&R but they need to clean house and refocus! I hate to see anyone lose their job but the characters I mentioned are useless to the show. I dont understand why they got rid of Avery for this! Courtney was growing on me and I would have loved to see her and Noah be the next Nick and Sharon? And Michael and Lauren, hello! Did they even wrap up his cancer story or are we suppose to forget it ever happened?

    Dylan replied

Sounds like such a tough elusive game plan, hey Timmm?

Write stories viewers like + use characters they care about = Ratings Success.

Unlike the old RC Formula, which was:

Completely gut the show of any decent or likeable characters + put newbies front and centre + shove veterans aside + dumb down the characters and stories to the point of absurdity = RECORD Low Ratings and a Pink Slip..

There was nowhere to go but up for GH, as cancellation was the ONLY other option.

    Timmm replied

Amen Dylan! I did like Ron’s humor, though. Soaps, as in real life, you have to find humor in most things or you will go bonkers! My biggest problem with Ron or maybe it was Frank is bringing in legacy characters as window dressing and not giving them anything to do! The ladies seem to want to write some dialog and a story with a beginning, middle and end! Now lets get Laura moving!

    awww Timmmm..
J&S seem to writing for grandmas, especially those godawful sex scenes lol..
I dunno.. It really is BORING and going nowhere fast..
The Dante, Lulu and Val triangles is horribly dull..
Alexis and Julian have been drained of their fire and turned into old people babysitting stuff..
Sonny is a smiling monk.. I’m waiting for him to be surrounded in a glimmering golden light..
I’m sick to barf with long drawn out everyday bipolar stuff, poor morgan can’t even get it up, same as they wrote for poor Micahle’s penise cancer.. J&S simply don’t like virial men..
They have has 5 months to reveal Jason, but keep him as Jake..
There is not one suspenseful story, not even a good mystery, nothing exciting, GH is a sleeper..
Hayden and Nikolas started out to be mysteriously interesting, now they are nothing much..
Ratings will soon start to drop, wait for it :)

su0000ster, J&S will always have the music box on their resume BUT I am willing to give them or any writer a year to turn things around. I do miss Ron’s campy, tongue in cheek style BUT he seemed to write little pockets or bits and not stories. Sonny, they are redeeming him. It may be a bit boring but once he walks he will light em up! The bi polar story is very sloppy, I agree. Jason is the new Fluke, I agree. BUT, I do see structure and I do see vets getting a chance. One thing none of the writers have done in years is rebuild the Q’s. THATS what I would like most.

    CeeCee replied

Oh, my SuzieQ; not to worry. Sonny’s head will never be surrounded by a golden or silvery light. Vampires cannot tolerate light of any kind.
I must say, though….look at what these writers are doing to Nathan. Stuck in the chicken coop. Hens a-clucking….A love triangle perhaps? LOL.
I did not find that little skit in Maxie’s apartment amusing, if that was their intent.
I do agree with you in one respect, su….the men are being emasculated , one by one.
    Bye, babes.

I can’t take the Hope ‘melodrama’ any longer. She is an adult; a seasoned cop, for Petey sakes…..stop with the Maid Marian, “rescue me, Rafe” syndrome. I can’t take the kids anymore either. Can it get any more insipid in Salem?
As someone already mentioned; it was so nice to finally have Steve and Kayla come together, when TPTB had to spoil the pretty picture with Ava. I know, I know, I’m whining…..
Just one more thing: I wish Belle would frame that dry hair around her prominent forehead…grow bangs, or something. YIKES!!

  8. Dottie says:

Of course they are, we were promised romance and we have not gotten any. Belle jumping Phillip’s bones is not romance. Getting Steve and Kayla back together was a start but then they brought in Ava, a waste of airtime. Hope’s gone off her rocker, our favorite villain was shot down in cold blood by one of our beloved favorite characters. There’s been nothing but murder, death and stress, people watch soaps for a little drama, a little romance and an escape. Days is just full of stress lately~ no fun!

    Lew S. replied

Dottie, My thoughts exactly! Many may say they want action and thrills, but the basis of soaps is romance and couple to root for. Hopefully, DAYS will listen to the viewers and slow it up with the death of the week/month.

they had what seemed like a month long memorial !

I just found it stupefying that so little attention was made; Will, Bo, Aiden, Paige, Serena

perhaps it’s because he was a Saint
perhaps it’s because he had his hand/person in every thing

that a memorial and gathering took up Horton Square

lo and behold… it was a time for the audience to be reminded of how much we missed Arianne Zucker.

As I predicted- that slight bump reported last week was because people were home on Monday for the holiday and home Friday because of the blizzard– and this rating period they were all back to work.

As for the stories. I know soap time moves differently than ours, but leaving poor Sam in the cellar for a week was annoying, had to watch a lot dribble each day to find out what happened to her, and I suspect many other viewers were doing the the same.

As for B&B I think Liam believing Quinn is his wife is priceless. I could watch those two all day. This has been the most refreshing version of Brad’s Triangle fixation yet. Let Wyatt have Steffy, I think having these two mortal enemies, Liam and Quinn, actually fall in love would be the best thing to happen in a long time on the show– it’s funny, it’s odd but there is something sweet and tender to it as well, as I watch Liam’s misguided affection work on Quinn’s harden heart. So you betcha I’ve been tuning out Days to watch B&B, because of Quinn and Liam– that story is hilarious and hopeful and after all the dark, depressing stories on Days I need a story that makes me smile.

Leaving Sam in the cellar for a week is nothing for J&S..
Their stories go on and on and on and on, some without end..
It’s how they write, very long stories drawn out stories..
Speed is not their thing, quite the opposite..

As bizarre as The Quinn and Liam story is, I’m really enjoying it, too. Probably the first time I have actually liked Liam since I started watching B&B a couple of years ago. Always like Quinn since Rena playing Lois at GH. It will be interesting where the writers take this story because you know it’s got to implode at some point.

Seriously, how is she still in that damn basement? Didn’t Jason or Liz notice Sam’s car parked in front of the house when they went looking for Jake? Or are we supposed to assume Sam hoofed it over there in those 8-inch stilettos of hers?

This story was much better written the first time I saw it when Gigi was trapped in a carbon monoxide filled basement on ONE LIFE TO LIVE…

I love GH but I’m constantly bothered by how the writers just don’t think anything through – this is in response to the posts above about Sam in the basement. Everything is done so the plot they’ve made up will work, so stupid things happen.

I have to agree, I miss Ron’s campy humor. Unfortunately at the end of his regime, he seems to have dried up. I heard there was network interference, I don’t know.

And by the way, for those of you who haven’t seen Michael Fairman in person, his photos do not do him justice. Very very handsome.
