One Life to Live is showing everyone,  “Um. Hey, you cancelled the wrong soap, guys!”  The ABC soap continues to show growing numbers, despite that three network soaps for the week of August 8-12, 2011 took a loss in total viewers including One Life.

But here are the facts that illustrate that OLTL is on a continue upward swing that is nothing short of phenomenal!  The series is now tied for total households viewing the show with a 2.1 share, tying with The Bold and the Beautiful! This is the best showing by OLTL in total households, since December of 2008.  Add that to the fact that One Life to Live has gained +641,000 viewers since last year at this same time, and the show is garnering good steam when it migrates online via Prospect Park.

Of note: General Hospital, All My Children and Days of our Lives all gained viewers for the rating week of Aug 8-12, 2011.  View the entire ratings courtesy of Soap Opera Network by clicking here.

sounds great when you say it like that, but aren’t you forgeting to tell your readers that the network only care about the 18-49 demographic/ rating #, so even though oltl is doing great in household #, the networks make their money off the 18-49 demo # and the ones doing great in those # are the y&r and gh, and yes oltl is climbing their too, but those are the # we should be paying more attention too.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE is “chewing” up the competition these days, pun intended. By the way, what a slap in the face to be bombarded with these chew promos. The mouse network and its evil minions continue to disrespect us, but I digress. FV and RC have wowed us with an unstoppable joyride of purely delicious soapy drama. Meanwhile, in all the insanity of story lines that require suspension of disbelief, believable, character-driven, heartfelt dialogue and interactions pull us in, making us relate to and empathize with these characters. Now THAT is excellence! Sure, Irene’s story sounded like something out of a junior-high science fiction story, but that was just a plot point to fuel the character-driven buffet of emotions we were treated to afterward. Whose heart didn’t break for Todd.1, as he lamented the lost years, or Todd.2/Victor, as he wrestled with the truth of his identity and the loss of the family he thought was his.

Meanwhile, over at the Tiffany network, daytime’s titan and crown jewel, Y&R, continues its downward spiral. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if Sony and/or MAB are deliberately destroying this show. While OLTL is by far my favorite show for the past few years, it was Y&R that I grew up loving. I have even volunteered to write for and fix this show, because as a fan who knows the history, I felt like I was at the very least qualified to give input about how I felt characters would behave and react in specific situations. What we have now is a plot-driven hot mess featuring destruction of characters we have known and loved for decades, as well as newbies we just don’t care about. Sure, Genie Francis is popular, but she belongs on GH. Who do I want to see on Y&R? Melody Thomas Scott, darn it! So, Maria Arena Bell: if you read this, Y&R fans want OUR Y&R back! We are tired of stunt casting, outrageous plot-driven stories, rewritten history, and our beloved characters behaving out of character. ALSO, one last point: I’m not an attorney, but common sense does tell me that you cannot be tried in Wisconsin for allegedly pushing someone into a volcano in Hawaii (I just can’t believe I said that in the same context as Y&R. Is the world really ending?) Give us our beautiful, character-driven, realism that was Y&R up until 2005 back, now!

So, in a nutshell, you go, ONE LIFE TO LIVE! You’re the little soap that could, and I’m glad you’re sticking it to abc and the rest of them all! Y&R? Get your act together. If a diehard fan like me, who has defended you to a fault, can step off the Y&R train, I think you’re in trouble.

Prospect Park needs to find a way to keep both Carlivati (as HW) and Valentini (as EP) at OLTL. They’re both doing great work and are integral to the continued success of this terrific soap. ABC stands to make millions if OLTL and AMC do well on the web. Holding RC to his contract and demoting him to the position of script writer for GH would be a huge mistake. He and FV MUST be allowed to keep helming OLTL! They, as well as the show’s wonderful cast, are a winning team.
