6 September 3rd, 2011 RATINGS: Y&R dips in key demos while OLTL in at # 1 women 18-34!

It was not a good week overall for the soaps in the ratings game … the week of August 22- 26th.  Nor was it a good week for viewers who were on the Atlantic Coast due to that week’s strange earthquake that shook up the east,  and then on Friday due to Hurricane Irene and subsequent news coverage pre-empting many soaps!

So with natural disaster affecting viewership in some instances, The Young and the Restless which still holds firmly at number one in total viewers (even though it hit a new low in that category) seems to be losing some ground with its key demos as well.  It especially lost ground in the key 18-49 female demographic, hitting for them, the lowest amount of female eyeballs in recent ratings memory.  But even with the loss, it is still in the top slot there.

One Life to Live which is still holding firmly at number three in total viewers, finally got to the number one position in the women 18-34 demo for the first time ever!  General Hospital, however, lost the most total viewers for the week losing -230,000!

I love my favorite soap, Young and the Restless, and enjoy it every day. That being said, if there were a few things I would like to see change, they would be as follows:

    - The Malcolm/Sofia/Neil “who’s the daddy” storyline is a total bore.
    - Please Cane, stop referring to your kids as, “tha babiezzz”.
    - Stacy Haiduk reappearing as Patty. Someone make it happen fast! She was amazing.
    - More catfights! Y&R had some classics… they need to bring them back asap!
    - A gay storyline with some meat; I mean it both figuratively and literally!

Things I’m loving right now include:

    - The actress playing Avery Clark – she is very talented & a breath of fresh air.
    - The pending return of MTS to the GC canvas. It’s been way too long!
    - Anything with Jess Walton…. she is often overlooked & it’s a shame; she’s incredible.

The reason why the numbers keep growing for OLTL is because the show is freaking awesome!!! It just keeps getting better and better!! Every day that I watch, I can’t believe how great this show is!

I agree, until the day Trevor St. John’s Todd/Victor was shot and killed. They couldn’t let his character leave Llanview alive to give us some hope of his return? The show has been so painfully gutted I haven’t been able to watch.

What difference does the Prospect Park deal make? What is there left to look forward to? The remaining storylines are becoming tired and trivial. Many of the characters are miserable because of recent deaths and disability. Rex and Shane are pathetic without Gigi. Tea and other family members are suffering without Todd/Victor. Bo, Nora, and Destiny are sad without Matthew. Life is depressing enough without this.

But what do the producers and writers under contract to ABC care? They aren’t continuing with OLTL anyway. The loss of Trevor St. John and his character are significant, but obviously this is lost on the producers and writers.

Prospect Park, please resign TSJ and give me hope for OLTL.

For the week of August 22-26, OLTL rated above GH in every category! If ratings matter, GH should be canceled before OLTL. If ratings don’t matter, then advertising revenues aren’t that important so why replace the soaps with reality show trash? Maybe these networks executives are dim or don’t know what they are doing or both.

OLTL continues to outshine all other daytime dramas at the moment. I think the shooting of Victor opened up many new and exciting storylines. I know in the world of soaps we saw victor utter his last words and die, but whose not to say when they took him away in the ambulance their was a slight pulse and the emt got hijacked by irene’s corporation. Anything is possible.

In any event, OLTL is on fire and unstoppable. I’m loving every moment of it.

So stupid of Frons and Sweeney and all of the suits to cancel OLTL. It’s #1 in key demos and the show still has months to go. Too bad they can’t fire those idiots and keep OLTL on for good.
But ABC’s loss is Prospect Park’s gain!
