44 July 19th, 2013 RATINGS: Y&R Has Solid Week with Gains! GH Rebounds Gains Viewers Too!

Courtesy/Y&Rfansitefacebook

The ratings are out for the week of July 8-12th and it was The Young and the Restless who lead the way gaining the most viewers of any network soap opera on their strength of their then reveal by Nick Newman that he is not Summer’s bio-dad, but Jack is!

The culmination of that leg of the storyline (only to have another twist happen on this past Monday’s episode, which ensures the story is not over) gained the number one soap +258,000 viewers bringing their total for the ratings week to 4,654,000.

Over at General Hospital, after a very disappointing showing the prior ratings week, the ABC soap had a rebound of sorts gaining +117,000 and inching oh so close to regaining the number three slot from Days of our Lives! GH tallied 2,449,000 while DAYS has 2,450,000!   In addition, after scoring an all-time low in the key female 18-49 demo the previous week, GH added +87,000.  DAYS as noted was the one show that lost viewers for the ratings week losing -117,000!

The Bold and the Beautiful kept up its strong showing again netting +87,000 for a total of 3,509,000.  Is Katie lashing out at Brooke and Bill helping the show? Are fans into Wyatt and the secret as the new man for Hope? Or, could it be that fans love seeing Jacqueline MacInnes Wood (Steffy) again who appeared on two episodes this ratings week?

OK soap fans, time for you to check out the stats courtesy of SON here. Then let us know as our Soap Opera Programming Executive Armchair Quarterback, what worked for you during the ratings week mentioned? How would you change up or increase viewership on your favorite soap? What is working for you? And, what is not? Share your thoughts in the comment section!

I am going to be curious to see next week’s number to see how many viewers the show lost with the Sharon twist coming out. I know a number of fans were let down with that reveal- so it will be interesting if the numbers show a drastic drop or were many like me, just venting our disappointment, but still are watching.

GH can and will gain more viewers, the other shows in my own opinion are not as good, with the back and forth storyline of Who is Summers dad its bound to turn people off. GH has great storyline right now and the momentum is flowing!

Yea Shawn I know people give up on soaps thats the problem, ive NEVER stopped watching except when i was in europe for 2 straight summers, ive watched this show for over 20 plus years, and ill watch till I die!!

    Nick replied

Are you serious? I don’t know what show you’re watching, but that momentum on GH certainly is NOT flowing forward. GH completely sucks and desperately needs a new head writer with fresh, new direction. The show has never been this bad creatively, IMO.

I’ve had it with Ron Carlivati, especially his unprofessional attitude on Twitter. Hey Ron, if you can’t take any criticism from fans/viewers about your second-grade style writing, then go find another line of work. Without fans/viewers, you have no job, and you’re not above everyone. I’ll bet that any fan could write the show better within its budget than this overrated, conceited hack.

GH will gain the viewers from late 2012/early 2013 back (such as me) if/when there are actually engaging, fresh stories that feature characters (read: vets) that most fans want to see. Right now, there are none unless you’re actually entertained by this ridiculous overexposed Franco/Kiki/Silas crap. It’s sad and a real shame to see what has happened to this once iconic show.

Nick its flowing, if you do not like Ron Carlivati then tell him but in a consgtructive way, criticizing him will get you ignored or blocked, you expect him to do differently??? He has as much right as anyone else to ignore or not. Im not saying some stories do not need improving but the stories on canvas now are flowing, some do need to be wrapped up and others cannot be finished as they are not on the show, how can the Robin story be c leared up if she is not working on the show??? Come on folks if they are not asked to be on as is the case with Triston Rogers how do we expect to see Robert??? Do they replace him??? NOOOOOOO I find that i give my opinion without insults, You get more flies with honey then you do vinager!! ;)

LOVE GH! The writing is amazing and I am loving the use of the “older” characters. It is about time Lesley Webber (Denise Alexander) is getting some “acting” air time! LOVE GH!

Unbelievable. Are you feeling all right, man? You can stop kissing that egomaniac Ron Carlivati’s rear end. Are we really watching the same show?

But I do agree on one thing. The writing on GH is certainly “amazing”. Yeah, it’s amazing just how GODDAMN HORRIBLE it is now. (That’s what GH should stand for presently.) I guess if you like stories growing mold that have been recycled 1000 times from GH previously or from his precious OLTL, it’s been wonderful! Ron C could not write his way out of a paper bag and come up with anything fresh to save his life!

If GH has really been getting great writing in the last two months, then the entire daytime soap genre is on death’s doorstep.

As someone on another board pointed out, at this point between Michael Easton and Roger Horwath the two of them have played SEVEN different characters between themselves in little more than a year. That is downright absurd. Little by little it does seem to be getting better (from a threshold of abominable, as NIck has said).

BUT it has a long way to go. The cast should be reduced by about 25% so the pacing and interconnectedness of the storylines can be repaired. People are sick to death of Franco and Kiki.

    Elizabeth replied

Please, expound. Exactly what about the writing do you find amazing? I have to say as a soap watcher, on and off for more than 40 years, all three networks, I find RC’s writing to be more campy, superficial, sloppy, lazy and disjointed as I have ever seen. Personally I think the RC/FV team has been reckless in their decisionmaking ranging from the risks at ignoring the PP contract, firing all the GH writers such that they lost the continuity with all the characters, then bringing back Roger Horwath as Franco. Such terrible decisionmaking as to warrant a classic case study in business schools across the country.

    I agree with Richard!

Good news that ratings are up for Y&R and others. Is it true that if you DVR a program the following day or days after it’s showing that it doesn’t count toward the ratings? If this is true that more and more people are binge-watching t.v. maybe they should revamp how the ratings are tallied. Also, I do not fall into the 18-49 age category but I watch all the soaps currently being aired. Does this also mean that my viewing doesn’t count? I just want to make sure my loyalty to the soaps matter to the ratings to help support the soaps. Michael Fairman, would you respond to this?

I agree jim, we’ve seen signs of the ship being turned ever so slightly in the right direction I’d say arguably in the last two weeks as compared to the whirlpool make that cestpool that GH has been sucked into ever since the curtains came down after the nurses ball. We’ve got Nancy Lee Grahn taking on a promising storyline and there’s intrigue with many other characters that has been lacking. Sam, Maxie, Sonny, Connie, Olivia, Britt, and Nikolas all seem to have story momentum building right now that if executed properly could pay off big in restoring GH. But more characters certainly need some meaningful intelligent storyline and GH could use a few powerhouse returns desperately. I’m talking Sarah Brown or Vanessa Marcil caliber. GH also needs to cut it’s losses and dead weight which mainly involves everything surround the Silas, Faux-Franco and Kiki debacle!

GH is the best soap, it has less viewers than BB and Y&R because they both are shown in 32 countries..

More viewers does not mean a better soap..
More viewers is more distribution ..

Actually the ratings only count from the U.S. Santa Barbara had a phenomenal following in other countries. It was a worldwide sensation in its day, and even that didn‘t spare it from the ax. Other countries pay a flat fee for airing rights to the show, but their ad rates do not make a difference. It certainly helps the show‘s financial bottom line to air in lots of countries, as it gives the show more budgetary finances, but the Nielsen ratings are only tallied from the U.S.

thanks unlike the naysayers it IS on a roll, people complain about the storys and cast and it is not fair to the actor proaying them, Im still puzzled as to the 7 character Easton and Howarth have played and even if it is 7 they are ACTORS and get paid quite nicely to do that, cutting the GH cast by 25% makes no sense as they do not nearly have the cast it did in its hey day, give me a break, also if you do not like a story let them know complaining here about how lack luster it is, is being an arm chair writer without a pay check!

    Mary SF replied

I believe Easton has played John McBain, Stephen Clay, Caleb the vampire and now Silias Clay. Howarth has played Todd Manning, Franco and now Jason Morgan. Granted Stephen and Caleb were technically the same person, and so is Franco/Jason, but there were separate personalities in the same body, so between them they have played seven characters in less than a year.– and I think both are good job doing it.

    Elizabeth replied

Starting to roll and still dropping storylines to accommodate sloppy writing. (Since we haven’t seen anything else on the resolution of who shot Olivia by the PCPD that is.)

GH has become a joke. Way too many newbies and the Livers have taken over this show.

And this trying to redeem Franco is ridiculous. The DVD’s didn’t work so now FV/RC decided to try to use the character of Jason to expose the supposed brain tumor Todd/Franco has. We all know when the tumor is removed it’s back to Todd, the only character RH can play.

    Reply

    Mary SF replied

Unfortunately if they want RH on the show long term they have no choice but to redeem Franco– because truly evil, evil characters cannot last that long on any show. But they could be setting it up that RH will be Jason, and Franco had his face altered to look like his and brainwashed him to believe he was Franco. And now his(Jason’s) brain tumor is back; it is undoing all of that. Who knows which way they are going on this. Personally, I think it would have been better if they just created a whole new character for him, but it is difficult for viewers and sometimes even actors after playing one role for so long to see anyone else but that old character no matter how hard they might try to be a new character.

Sidenote–I am curious I never watched Steve Burton when he was on GH — anyone who watched GH and Y&R– is Dylan like Jason, or has SB managed to get away from his old character? Just wondering if all soap actors have a difficult time getting away from a character they played for years on end, because I know when I watched the guy who plays Stefano on Days on B&B a few years back- all I saw was Stefano

BOOO!! The storylines on GH are brilliant right now. There are so many story lines and they are doing a great job juggling them all so they all get airtime and we have something new to watch every day.

Brilliant? Well, if you like rubber masks, hallucinations, vampires and Ojija boards, this show is for you. If you like incest and showcasing a mean gay trying to blackmail and straight, this show is for you.

Since the GH vets left from the 50th show and Nurses Ball ratings have gone down for GH, not up. I agree with Jack Wagner 100%.

    Elle replied

Sounds like you like it more than you will admit. The rubber masks were a while ago…and you’re still watching.
This is General Hospital – the soap opera, not the reality show. The intent of a soap opera is to provide entertainment during the day when nothing else is on. They span all genres – romance, horror, mystery, drama, comedy and yes, surprisingly sometimes even supernatural. It is almost always far fetched and ridiculous, but thats why soaps are popular. They are a great break from reality! We have to take these shows with a grain of salt. Regardless of the ridiculous story lines, personally, I cheer when couples I love get together and sit on the edge of my seat waiting for the bad guys to get what they deserve. I even cry when they do deal with real issues like Luke’s alcoholism and Sam’s stillborn daughter. To me, that is a sign of excellent writing and even better acting. Way to go GH!!

I think the Baldwin family drama needs some credit for the ratings also that week. They were on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Christian and Tracey have been brilliant. That week Likey decided not to divorce as Fen overdosed.

That was a heavy vet week focusing on the paternity of Summer, Baldwin family in crisis, Sharon seeing Cassie, and Billy and Nikki had a great talk.

Keep the vets we care about front and center with newer characters as support and in B storylines.

Brenda I do not either but Sharon Case has been playing it to the hilt she and PB are the one’s that are even making this story watchable. I also think you are going to discover on down the line that Jack is the father I think this was purely done with Sharon’s involvement as a way for MS to exit when she decided she did not want to renew her contract. Maybe totally wrong but they had to figure out a way for MS to exit she just would not leave town because Summer would need her. PB is right when he said SC has been given a couple of bad years of stories where fans hate her yet she has stepped up to the plate and played it like a professional.
