52 December 19th, 2012 REPORT: Susan Lucci Has Been Contacted By Prospect Park For AMC Revival!

Hot on the heels of the shocker via Deadline.com the other day that Prospect Park is apparently resuming their efforts to bring One Life to Live and All My Children back online, (something they were unable to do at the beginning of this year and thus had to pull out) comes word today via Showbiz411.com, that indeed Prospect Park has contacted All My Children star and soap icon, Susan Lucci to reprise her role of Erica Kane in the new online version that per the rumors they hope to debut in the early part of this year.

According to the item it reads,  “Don’t get excited just yet. I have been told by a very good source that Prospect Park Productions has contacted Susan Lucci, aka Erica Kane, about a revival of  All My Children online and maybe on cable. There have been reports in the last couple of days that Prospect Park, whose license with ABC on All My Children and One Life to Live, is trying to re-activate the much-missed soap operas. A friend of Lucci told me yesterday:  ‘There have been some talks, but the word wasn’t supposed to get out yet.’  Hmmmm….”

The report also goes on to say that Robert S. Woods  of One Life to Live,  told Showbiz 411′s Roger Friedman, that, “He’d heard rumblings about Prospect Park’s renewed interest, but that he had not been contacted yet. ‘They may not know how to find me,’ said Woods, who’s been kicking back in upstate New York after 30 something years of service to “OLTL” as leading hero Bo Buchanan.”

So soapers, with Susan Lucci now on Devious Maids on Lifetime, and no official statement from Prospect Park yet on their renewed interest, do you think that La Lucci  being back on an AMC cable or online version could be in her future?  Would Susan take part in the revival after everything tanked last time? Weigh-in!

It is looking looking much better this time around to actually happen ..
It is an extremely huge challenge to produce a daily TV soap for the internet, and that has not yet been done by anybody ..
I wish PP all the best in their frontier move to bring a TV production to the internet..
I do believe they will they do it.. they have put a year in getting it together and learned from the mistakes with their first try.
I’m looking forward to seeing my favorite soaps , once again :)

Bring them back! Yes, I do believe Susan would revive her role. She’s publicly stated she still misses it, months after it was cancelled. So many of the AMC stars have not gone to other soaps, so I think they could revive a good part of the cast. Love to see OLTL revived. The Buchanans, Vicki….let’s make it happen!

Susan has too many other irons in the fire with Devious Maids coming up, plus her show on Investigative Discovery, plus her Pilates shows. At 66 (and I’m a year younger than her and retired), I would think she would be looking to slow down a little!

Just a little too late I just don’t know how they’d pull it off too many have moved on and OLTL is a mess now with the destruction of the end because of some of the actors going to GH and John geez his character has been totatly turned into sleeze not to mention I doubt ME will leave GH to go to PP which makes that huge story go puff! AMC i didn’t watch the last 8yrs or so I don’t know what that wouls in tail but it wasnt messed with on GH so its in better shape……and the actors I doubt they are going to go for it after they were burned.

If this actually comes to pass this time, they are going to have to learn from what killed soaps! Dont hire a bloated cast of 30 players. Focus on a manageable 15. Make the shows more like prime time. Dont air them 5 days a week. Dont hire the same old same old writers. Focus on couples not outlandish plots and violence. Let the characters mature and grow. Dont write Erica Kane as a 30 something. Quit with the back from the dead and baby switches and dopplegangers. Write believable, relatable stories. These shows can come back, but there are valid reasons why they died. Tweak them, fix them, and let them flourish in a whole new way!

IMO what is killing soaps are viewers like you, who keep expecting them to be something they are not. They are called soap OPERA- have you every been to an opera- operas take ordinary situation and make them MELODRAMATIC- it is supposed to be a bit unrealistic. But some people want their soaps to be like musical theater.
As for soaps being more like prime time- yuck- what is so great amount prime time? Dancing celebrities, vampires, crime shows with gross body parts everywhere, graphic sex scenes, vulgar language, wizards, Honey Boo Boo. No thanks I will take daytime dramas over that stuff any day. But even if that is what viewers want in daytime, keep dreaming, because NO network WILL EVER invest the kind of money into daytime- EVER. Should there be some kind of re working of the formula that made soaps what they were- yes- but as I said it before and I will say it again, perhaps more viewers would enjoy what is there if they stop expecting soaps to be what they were never intended to be.

Once again Mary you completely misread what I was saying. When i said more like prime time i am talking about prime time soaps like Dallas or Desperate Housewives. I said i do not want violence! I meant smaller more affordable casts with less fluff and filler. I meant hire GOOD writers, not the same old ones who write the same crap day after day and year after year. Soaps lost their identity a long time ago and became cartoons of their former selves. Its hard to enjoy what is there when there is little to enjoy. I obviously love soaps and I want them to thrive and flourish, but there is a reason why they died! Thats my point. There needs to be major tweaking and fixing across the board…financially, creatively, contractually…everything. if they keep doing it the same way, the shows are doomed to fail again and no one wants that.

    Mary SF replied

Sorry if I misunderstood what you were saying. I just love the format for daytime television as it is- and it upsets when I read posts advocating changing that format. If they did make soaps like you suggested, in my heart, they wouldn’t really be a soap in the classic sense of the word.
So either way, whether they die because no one is interested in the format that is there, or they die because the format is changed to a different form of continuing drama- I’m afraid the soap opera that I have known and loved for over 40 years will be over.
If Days or Y&R ever became like Desperate Housewives or Dallas I will not be watching because they are not really soaps- continuing dramas yes, but despite calling them a nighttime soap they never were the same thing. So I guess I just have to enjoy what is there while it there.
Yes, we both do love soaps, but we have different ideas of what a soap should be- and I think my side has lost because no one seems to get the point I have been trying to make in this posts and others.
So I’m going to give up trying and just accept the soap opera format I love will soon be gone and whatever will replace it will never be the same or even have the impact the old format did. A format that lasted longer than other trends born out of the 50′s and 60′s.
Have a great Christmas and l look forward to reading more of your posts in the New Year.

I hope you have a very “Mary“ Christmas too. Lol. All i mean Mary is that soaps have to change and adapt. They also have to get back to what they always did best when they were cash cows…romance and escapism. They need to stop hiring writers who have no fresh ideas and who fail at show after show. Im all for the conventions and unique qualities of the genre. The reason I can accept all the back from the dead characters on GH is because the last regime decimated the cast. This would not work on, say, Y and R. Writers have to know their show and know their fans. It is just very hard to be emotionally involved and invested when something insults our intelligence. Like SORAS…when done correctly, it can totally work. When done too soon, it totally takes the viewer out of the drama and has them thinking…“hey, this makes Nicholas almost 50 years old!“ the fact is, soaps died…changes need to be made. I think change is preferable to having none at all, right?

I was wondering when the actors reports and probably tweets would start to come out about this PP do over. The plot is thickening. Still on the fence about all of it. Already burned once. I wonder how the actors feel, getting the rgts to both shows, on what channel (hopefully on cable),etc.. will come into play. Sounds like a lot of hurdles, but it would be a great Xmas present and start to the New Year. I’ll remain cautious but fingers crossed.

I think if PP can get together enough of the famous actors of AMC as well as some of the lesser knowns, Susan Lucci may indeed sign on with PP. We need people like Walt Willey, Tad (Michael Knight), for starters for AMC and definitely Bo (Robert Woods), Clint, Viki – Robin would be a plus – and some of the younger stars for OLTL. So many of OLTL stars are on GH now and I doubt that they would leave that soap on TV for a soap on the web. I sure hope they will get enough cast together for both soaps and I will be one who will be very happy to watch them on the Web!!!!!!

Excellent observation – I agree 100%. I’d go with OLTL first since key players have been given continued life on GH, and other OLTL characters have been mentioned here and there. You’re right, Tim – start slow and build. We can only hope the PP people have a logical thought process, too.

I’d go with OLTL over AMC as well….I think that you both are right. Start small and work your way up to something more. I really think that they should look into having a different air time schedule…maybe not be on 5 days out of the week….or have a Summer break….even a Winter break. Do whatever you need to do, to really give it a great production value. They need to focus on trying to bring the show back, the way people remember it. If you make too many changes, and cheapen the production value, fans will not recognize the show, and will not feel intrigued to watch. So, whatever corners they can cut, to help with the production value, will be a great thing.

We soap fans have been disrespected, lied to and played by both ABC/D and PP. So I personally am not going to get my hopes up. If PP does revive AMC & OLTL there will be many challenges. Major characters andstars have moved on. The sets and wardrobes are gone. It’s December 20th so how can PP say they would re-launch AMC & OLTL in January let alone the early part of 2013. As for Susan Lucci, I would have to be absolutely positive of this re-launch before committing to anything PP does.

Just seems wierd that they are making movement at the last minute here. I want to be excited but I just am so suspicious of PP. I wish they would have given our soaps back to Agnes Nixon for free. IMHO that would have been the right thing for ABC to do. I am sure she would have found a good steward for them. OLTL was the best show ever! I would love to see the casts and crew of these two shows have their jobs again and am very interested to see what will transpire.

I think if they’re contacting Susan Lucci, which was reportedly never done prior (unless rumours of wanting higher pay is true), then it’s likely that they’re more serious about bringing All My Children back online, and that is very exciting!

I hope several others are talked into returning like: Christina Bennett Lind (Bianca), Sarah Glendening (Marissa), Cady McClain (Dixie), Michael E. Knight (Tad), Cameron Mathison (Ryan), Rebecca Budig (Greenlee), etc. Most of the regular cast at the time of the series finale on ABC.

As for producers/writers, I hope they allure Julie Hanan Carruthers and Lorraine Broderick back to the fold to helm the series. They really rocked together during AMC’s final months on the air. The stories were consistent and really character-driven, which is what this series truly needs.

And hopefully some fan favourites that didn’t make it back officially for the series finale, or that did and were only temporary are lured back for a more permanent basis.

I think that Prospect Park should use the model of British soaps like Holby City and East Enders. Holby City is on for an hour 52 weeks a year and East Enders is on twice a week, 52 weeks a year. Perhaps with this model Lifetime or Oxygen might be interested in picking it up for cable. All My Children would not be the same without La Lucci playing Erica Kane. One Life to Live on the other hand could thrive if it played up the Buchanans, bringing back Joey and Kevin, and focusing on CJ (who we never saw), and Sarah. Get back to the roots of the show that OLTL used to be back in the day.

What are the odds that the resurrection talk is surfacing now because ABC plans to cancel GH and is hoping to dangle the online option again, like it did through the OLTL & AMC cancellations, only to withdraw after the shows went off the air? I’d love to believe PP has good intentions but after hearing about ABC’s reality GH, I think the ABC execs have no intention of keeping GH on the air and wants to piss off the least amount of viewers it can.

I won’t believe it until I see it, BUT…this would lend some credibility to ABC’s story that Melissa Archer is locked into a contract with PP and therefore unavailable to work as Natalie on GH. Can they afford the sets, expensive clothes,& be able to pay all the actors ETC……IF it goes online will they charge us an outrageous price to watch them! I rather it go on a cable station where there would be commericals & have sponsers to help pay for all the expenses that go into making a soap opera.

  32. Skater Boy says:

I think we all would love AMC and OLTL to come back – but in good form, not done poorly, professionally and with integrity. I think we all are curious, hopeful but cautiously optimistic considering what happened last time.

First, soap operas while in trouble are still a part of the culture.

Second, yes, they need to secure the big stars – Sleazak and Lucci as they are the heart of the shows like it or not.

Third, which soap to bring back first or either – both at the same time. I see diehards on this web page say OLTL need to be on first though some concerns about the GH crossovers which has ïnfluenced the OLTL history and story scape. Like it or not, desite ABC butchering in the end or dying years of AMC, it is still the much higher “brand”" of the two soaps. Sleazak may be the better actress but Lucci would slaughter her in brand and image. LIkewse Robert Woods versus Walt Willey or David Canary wouldn’t have a chance. It is hard to be objective but tv q rating show the difference. I do not favour either soap but they both should come back and maybe look at a new format and no. of days as people have suggested with a smaller cast that you can relate too.

Fourth, hire good writers and smart ones with relationship oriented stories with a little added drama for escapism. Good sets and clothing sadly help too.

Fifth, rumours are going around this is Prospect Park’s hope to clean up their image – say they are trying to get it on air in some format and blame Lucci if she doesn’t or CAN’T sign on. It could be they are trying to contractually keep their license agreement as suggested or it could be a ploy to blame it all on Lucci. Remember folks she has a contract for Deadly Affairs and Devious Maids. She might not be in the best of positoins to sign another contract for AMC forget about she is getting on in years and may not want too or should not be working so much. Susan will have a lot of pressure and guilt knowing that whether she likes it or not jobs are on line for not only the actors but production employees. There is still a chance Devious Maids will fail but there is already 13 episodes which I don’t think all have been shot as of yet. The other problem Devious Maids is shot in Atlanta, Deadly Affairs New York and AMC is usually LA. Because Lucci is a soap star maybe Deadly affairs and Devious Maids can treat her more like a soap star one show per day and that way she could do more – but it might mean shootling Lucci’s scenes out of sequence ie. she shoots 5 weeks of shows in 5 days..

Sixth, I am pessimistic considering what happened the last time. I can’t see how PP can get all the money. Sure desperate out of worksoap star and production people (the actors could cut their already reduced salaries say in half but that is still a lot of money. I still think Lucci in particular is important for PR – her name sells comparatively (look how people reported PP contacted her – I don’t think Robert S Woods on his own would garner much attention – without Lucci’s name his name wouldn’t have been mentioned I bet that PP had not contacted him. (WAs he joking when he said maybe PP didn’t know how to get hold of him – wouldn’t the union be able to help?)
