Tonight in ceremonies being held in Los Angeles, The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is handing out their 2013 Writers Guild Awards for achievements in writing in motion pictures, television, new media, radio, and video games.

In the Daytime Drama category, it was the writing team from The Young and the Restless that bested the writing team from Days of our Lives and the final ABC writing team of One Life to Live. Many had anticipated that One Life to Live would take home the prize for their episodes which centered around the final “Fraternity Row” storyline.  Former OLTL head writer, Ron Carlivati told On-Air On-Soaps in a recent interview about the three scripts submitted for the award.  Ron related, “It is when they (Llanview) first learn that the soap opera is going to be canceled.  There is one in the middle where they are fighting to save it, and  the third one is the second to last episode of One Life to Live, where they watch the last show with Viki’s speech in it.”

Christopher Whitesell, who is now co-head writing Days of our Lives, but was previously on the winning Y&R writing team, took to the WGA Awards stage to accept the award on behalf of The Young and the Restless relating that if Y&R creator Bill Bell were alive, he would be proud.  After accepting the award, a clip from Y&R’s winning work was shown to the live audience which featured Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) and Kevin (Greg Rikaart) trying to figure out what to do with the very dead Dr. Tim Reid’s body!  The crowd in attendance at the WGA Awards loved the clip!

The Young and the Restless award winning team included writers: Amanda Beall, Jeff Beldner, Susan Dansby, Janice Ferri Esser, Jay Gibson, Scott Hamner, Marla Kanelos, Natalie Minardi Slater, Beth Milstein, Michael Montgomery, Anne Schoettle, Linda Schreiber, Sarah K. Smith, Christopher J. Whitesell, and Teresa Zimmerman.  The WGA Awards are being hosted by Castle and former One Life to Live star, Nathan Fillion.

So soapers, do you think the WGA selected the best writing team from the nominees?  Weigh-in!

I was not sure they would win, but I always bet on The Stafford, her performances are alway masterclass, and that in fact was one of the only good stories on the show for the last few months..Congrats to them

What is all the praise for Sharon? I agree Michelle is a strong actress. I want to see her character get back to the strong, straight forward dominate personality that it has been in the past. I would like for Nick to see what he has lost. He has never stuck by her. His answer – move on to another. Nick and Avery have no spark. Avery and Sharon can leave the show! Avery can not act!! Please ditch “the smug bug”. She can not act and brings nothing to the series. I have not missed Ashley either. Glad to see Abby back!

Team Sharon and Adam now if we can get Drucilla and Amber back the show would be off the chain awesome :)

I feel people are brainwashed to believe that Y&R is the best of everything lol
Y&R is not all that good and it stunk through 2012..
I see nothing in Y&R that has not been played there for years, never anything new..
The couples have been recycled for over a decade, the stories dull..
And yet it stays #1 in soaps, I see that as ridiculous..
I have watched Y&R for umpteen yrs and I still watch it daily, so my opinion is right on :)
((I nap through most of Y&R even when wide awake and energetic Y&R will lull me to nod off ..
geezit I can hardly wait for the next episode to catch a few winks while Avery is baking cupcakes and making soup. LOL :)

(nonetheless I am still a fan)

EPIC BS! Sounds like a JFK conspiracy. Everybody knows that OLTL should have taken this award. Y&R writing over the past few years were that of a 5th grader social studies paper.

Hey now.. I teach fifth grade social studies and my students’ papers are often better than Y&R writing.

The writing for Fraternity Row was phenomenal, it broke your heart but left you smiling….it went out on such a high note that we each and everyone one of us fans of the show refused to give up the tune. We didn’t give up. I am sorry once again that One Life doesn’t get the recognition it richly deserves. The show is gold, pure heart and soul.

Did you really need to gush about OLTL? Glad they lost since that Fraternity Row stuff was crap

    Congrats to Y&R. Always underestimated!

You are absolutely right, Loren. This was Y&Rs post, and Y&Rs night and my gush (and sour grapes) were inappropriate here. Would remove if could.

I always hope the best submission wins… that was OLTL as I saw all three. Possibly this explains why Y&R is stated to be the number one soap. The process is subjective and artistic and that must explain why they chose Y&R’s submission. I would say it was the second best and it must have been aided by a very talented performance by Michelle Stafford. We can only hope that GH wins the next one for RC!

OLTL was cheated. Hope it dosent happened with the daytime emmys. YAR is a good serial but OLTL was more deserving to win. I never missed an episode in its last two years.

I don’t think ANY awards show is indicative of what we actually see on our screens every day. The worst show out there can come up with at least 1-2 episodes that are passable, but that doesn’t mean the other 258 shows that year were worth watching. Y&R just got lucky with what they picked.
At least MAB wasn’t given an award!!!

Well, I am surprise it actually won considering how less than stellar some of the writing was on Y&R last year. I’m sure OLTL fans are going to have lots to say about this one.

Really? Y&R this year? You sure?

I have mixed feelings about awards in the arts. I am glad for opportunities for genuinely talented people to be recognized. I am unsure how artistic and cretive work can be objectively judged.

That said, I think the WGA missed the mark here. And we are reminded of how collaborative art is here… as actors clearly enhanced the material.

Excellent for nomination, I just cannot agree with the win.

No offense to the Y&R team but OLTL got robbed. The final week of ABC’s OLTL was one of the finest weeks I’ev ever watched in my 30+ years as a daytime viewer. Ron’s team shoud’ve had that award.

  17. Joe says:

OLTL has been the red headed step child of soaps since its inception. It RARELY got the reconition it deserved and won Best Show Emmy ONCE in 43 years. It’s bizarre because the actors have been winning Emmy’s for years which is because of their talent but ALSO because of what was written for them. Ron was snubbed because so many drink the Y&R Kool Aid….but we all know better. It’s simply politics. That or the odd Svengali hold JFP seems to have over voters.

Joe not trying to start a fight because I can’t stand JFP but i think this writing was still under MAB as head writer.

I tried to watch the Y&R both before and after the new team was in place. It just puts me to sleep. I feel they have been fighting over the same thing since the seventies. It is same dialogue since I was a young child. I have tried to get into it but just doesn’t work for me. I can not believe they won for best writing.
