127 March 30th, 2018 TODAY: General Hospital Marks Its 55th Anniversary With Special Episode!

While GH officially turns 55-years-young on Sunday April 1st, it is serving up its special anniversary today for fans of the ABC daytime drama series. General Hospital continues to be the longest running soap currently on television.

As for what’s on tap in today’s episode look for: walks down memory lane, nostalgia, a return from the one and only Lynn Herring (Lucy Coe) and some more surprises, and a song from Ned (Wally Kurth),

The episode will not only honor the rich history of the show, but also will move current story forward, much of which centers around an event that Sonny (Maurice Benard) has planned for this father, Mike (Max Gail) in hopes of helping his dad, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, to recall some important memories.

How will all play out? Stay tuned.

Now in the comment section below, send your congratulations to the cast, crew, creatives, and behind the scenes personnel for this incredible accomplishment of five and a half decades of soapy entertainment on General Hospital.

Nothing Frank does honors the “rich history” of GH. he has decimated the show, kicked Vets to the curb, even am icon like Genie. Almost all the male leads are gone and replaced by Frank’s hires. Howarth, Easton, DeVry, James Patrick Stuart, Billy Miller, Matt Cohen, Wes Ramsey, now whoever this Chase guy is… I mean seriously, it’s a joke already.

It isn’t GH, hasn’t been since Frank took over. I won’t be watching the anniversary show as I rarely watch these days anyway.

Amen, MB! To have even called this episode an anniversary celebration of GH was a complete joke! It was pretty much just more of the same old, same old Sonny-centric stuff to which we are constantly subjected with a sparse sprinkling of tributes to only a chosen few legacy characters..it certainly didn’t represent the best and brightest of Port Charles’ past, that’s for sure!

Hi Shay. They are too cheap to pay actors from the past residuals from showing clips! 55 years, it should have been a week long event!

    nancy dillingham replied

Yes, why didn’t TPTB just do the (whatever) “retrospective” on Sonny???? :(

    Shay replied

@Nancy….I would have had more respect for GH if they had simply called this spade a spade and advertised it as the “Sonny Spectacular” it unsurprisingly turned out to be…In and of itself, I had no quarrel with the notion of giving Mike a night to “remember,” but it could have just as easily been played out at Kelly’s Diner and not utilized in the guise of a 55th anniversary show tribute, since it was really nothing of the kind!

I stopped at ‘much of which centers around an event that Sonny’. I just can’t with this show. The moral center of the show, the lead, is now a mobster who killed AJ Quartermaine. What happened to the show being about a hospital. Back in it’s glory days, GH, centered around the hospital. Even in the hey days of Luke and Robert and all of their crazy adventures, Steve Hardy and everyone that worked there, were still present, a lot. And also, the fact that Genie Francis was shoved out the door, still stings. I will not be watching this mess, that was one a daily appointment. But for those of you that want the Sonny and Carly hour, congratulations. At least I can say I was a fan when it had high ratings.

You certainly didn’t miss much, Justin! Even though I had the lowest of expectations and not a whit of glorious anticipation regarding this episode, it definitely outdid itself in terms of its purely underwhelming awfulness. As you correctly called it, Sonny—-as always—-was king and what paltry crumbs were thrown for fans of the few other characters who were allowed to be highlighted were not sufficent enough for this show to be called a celebration of anything but the Corinthos Clan. The very notion that the night was centered around a place named Luke’s when there was no Luke in sight was totally absurd…..as was the atrocious spectacle of Monica attending a soiree hosted by the very man who killed her own flesh and blood son with this woman herself making a lame excuse for deigning to be in the same room as the murderous thug…it was utterly nauseating, as were the typical extremely obvious exclusions of those iconic GH characters who have fallen out of favor in order for Frank to foist his own menagerie of pets on the viewers. To call this “event” a “mess” was a true understatement, Justin!

Absolutely, dmr! If only we had been treated to some footage of those handsome Q-bros from back in the day before Kanan’s abrupt departure from GH…Not only were both Steve and Sean incredibly handsome in their All-American preppiness of the times, but their resemblance was so very striking!

I hope this episodes focuses on the history of the show and the characters who helped make the show great and keep it on air for all these years! Anna, Jason, Elizabeth, Scotty, Lucy, Bobbie, Monica and Ned should all be front and center! I am sick of Frank Valentini only using/catering to “his people”! Especially the overrated Kelly Monaco and all of Frank’s many, many, way too many new hires! This episode should be for the long time viewers – the ones Frank usually ignores! I hope today will be good! Under Frank’s tenure we see too many stories that fail to deliver! I really miss Wendy Riche! Congratulations and thank you to the cast and crew! Wish today’s show could include Genie Francis, Tony Geary, Anna Lee, John Ingle, David Lewis, Jack Wagner, Brad Maule, Stuart Damon, Norma Connolly, Tristan Rogers, Jackie Zeman, Tyler Christopher, Jonathan Jackson, Emma Samms, Vanessa Marcil, Ingo Rademacher, Rena Sofer, Sean Kanan, Amber Tamblyn, Sharon Wyatt, John Reilly, Rachel Ames, John Beradino, Emily McLaughlin, Peter Hansen, Susan Brown, Denise Alexander, Chris Robinson and so many others who helped make the show what it is! The fans remember all these talented actors and actresses; we appreciate them and the stories they told! I hope this episode honors all the ones that came before!

Congratulations to the GH team, especially the veterans, on 55 years. Looking back, here’s my take on the Top 5 GH Villains:

Cesar Faison — Anders Hove has the look of a villain that would give most children nightmares and could teach an acting class on how to play evil. Faison terrorized the citizens of Port Charles (off and on) for nearly 30 years. His reign of terror might be over, but what a glorious ride.

Grant Putnam — What is it about Scorpio family that brings out the most frightening villains? The aspiring doctor had his life taken away from him by the DVX. He enacted revenge with the help of a dog named Satan And who knew that “Merle the Pearl” from Eight is Enough could play evil so well? He’s long overdue for another return.

Mikkos Cassadine — Some may say freezing the world may be over-the-top, but the paternal Cassadine spawn numerous questionable offspring and had a devoted wife who continued his “legacy” decades after his death.

Stavros Cassadine — Of all Mikkos’ children, Stavros was definitely a chip off the old block. Robert Kelker-Kelly truly looked deranged. Every time Stavros came back, you knew he was going to die again, the only question was how permanent was the death going to be?

Manny Ruiz — Kudos to Mark Teschner for finding Robert LaSardo, and so many other great evil characters through the year. With one glance, you knew this was a guy you didn’t want to get involved with.

note: Cronic mental patients like Heather Webber and Olivia Jerome are different than villains. And, I would put Helena in a catergory all by herself.

I watched the original Stavros on YouTube and was very impressed by him. I found myself actually wanting him to win over Luke. He and Genie were a very attractive pair, and I believe they dated in real life.
Anderson Hove is incredibly creepy. He is so good opposite Finola.
    Grant Putnam is definitely memorable.

    Reply

    Shay replied

Yes, Delia….John Martinuzzi was a most elegant and smooth Stavros…still deadly and repellant in his own way, but certainly not as repugnant as the sawed-off weirdo later portrayed by Robert Kelker-Kelly! He actually enjoyed a lengthy relationship with Genie…there is an old archived interview with him when he discussed his acting past, as well as his newer career as a producer under his birthname of John Morrissey. It’s definitely worth the read….very illuminating!

Sorry Carol, you didn’t or couldn’t enjoy it with the rest if us that did. I cried off and on thru most of it, from the time Mike and Sonny stepped off the elevator in to Luke’s Place. The ones that weren’t there, were not missed, and it would have spoiled everything, seeing the unhappy and gloomy faces. So glad it was just the characters central to the show. I loved the idea of doing something good for Mike , that he so enjoyed, NOW, instead of trying to do something he probably would never remember. I thought it was really funny, when he asked Sonny, where Brenda was.
I also think GH outdid Y&R with nostalgia, etc. Their big “party” has been nothing but a downer, but then again the whole show has been that way. I guess this writer likes having everyone at each others throats. Sorry Vicki, no pun intended. I for one am sick of it!

Hello again, Violet….and welcome back! (You’ve been missed!) I’m glad you enjoyed the GH special 55th anniversary episode, as well as anyone else who did, but it does seem that it really missed the mark for many of us. Maybe our expectations are simply too high when it comes to this soap in its current state, as it does have quite a knack for continually disappointing when its hype doesn’t measure up to the actual delivered product. Even though I haven’t been tuning in much over the last month and have mainly depended upon recaps—save for watching this particular episode in all of its real-time, HDTV big-screen glory—-I do intend to give the show one last chance with the much-anticipated return of favorite superspy, Robert Scorpio…How I hope that his upcoming storyline will be deserving of Tristan Rogers’ iconic presence! Fingers crossed!

    Shay replied

Thank you, Carol! There was absolutely no need for that overrated showoff Lucy Coe to attend this event, which was already far too short on the truly iconic GH characters of the past. Neither ex (Scotty nor Kevin) showed interest in her presence, particularly Doc who looked disgusted at the mere sight of her—-particularly whilst his beautiful new wife, aka, fan favorite Laura, remains in a forced Parisian exile! Why all of this fuss just to run a ridiculous montage of her garish garb ala the NB when we couldn’t even have flashbacks of the beloved players that made this show great during its most successful years???? You’re spot on, Carol…it was boring!

Thought this went well. I was surprised by the guests and the flashbacks – didn’t know it was going to be the anniversary episode. Lots of fun flashbacks and the usual highlights hit. The one glaring thing that took me completely out of it was being reminded that there is no way Michael should be as old as he is. Showing the clip with a Jason (through the miracle of modern hair dye) that doesn’t look that much older than he did then showing Michael looking way older than the 21 year old he’s supposed to be, just kind of jarred me. Yeah, I know, it’s a soap trope that SORA exists to fit storylines, but sometimes when reminded, it kind of hits you. Anyway, I also thought it odd that Anna would say ‘the one time Robin was taken away from me’ rather than that time when Robin got blown up in a lab and everyone thought she was dead for a few years. Seems as though when Robin returned and ran into Anna’s arms, they did a montage of the earlier and the then current reunion.. they should have just done that. But everything else was pretty great – I had forgotten how blonde Monica and Bobbie have been in the past. :)

I don’t think it’s the, LOL, “hair dye.” Steve Burton is 47; Chad Duell is 30. Jason was probably 18-to early 20s? when Michael was born which would put them at less than 20 years apart in story. It works; Steve just looks good!

Absolutely gorgeous episode! FINALLY a promise with flashbacks that actually delivered! Would love a week’s worth or more of this wonderful trip down GH memory lane. On a critical note, though I loved the scene with Robin running into Anna’s arms, I think they used that one recently as well as Stone’s bedside. A happy Stone/Robin flashback would have been great; his death always brings me to tears. Loved seeing Steve Hardy, Audrey, Jessie…would liked to have seen Alan’s face even though the “pillow fight” was so “Q” of them. Not enough hours in a soapy day to get all those great moments back if even for a while…

And once again Max Gail broke my heart.

First time in a long time that they actually used footage and devoted an episode to doing so. And the way they incorporated it into Mike’s story was a great avenue for them to do it.

I would like to have these throwback episodes more, LOL, I could have watched this episode for a few hours or at least a few more scattered in during the next few weeks so we could revisit all those wonderful episodes/characters again, if even for a short while.

I know you’re a total Genie/Laura fan and so I understand your disappointment. And while I think you’re right, she should have been shown, I love enough of the other characters and the nostalgia of it all to have enjoyed it completely.

Rebecca, I think by now you know I am no ageist so I hope I did not offend you by saying that the difference between Laura and Lucy is the former actually grew up. And I like Lucy, albeit, I don’t love her (FYI–Lynn Kerring and Genie Frances are dear friends in real life).
Now, here is where I am going to tread into dangerous waters–I will take Kevin and Laura over Alexis and Julian any day. Kevin and Laura prove that a couple over age fifty can be sexy, romantic and sweet without reverting back to middle school antics. Did you see that flashback with Alexis dressed up in a lacy teddy with a rose in her mouth? I recall being incredibly amused by the buttoned up, Harvard Law school graduate, sexually repressed, pristine Alexis suddenly playing the role of a sex kitten. But that scenario has been on repeat over and over for the last twenty-five years and it’s grown tired. Alexis has not only failed to evolve and mature, she’s actually regressed.
I hate how Alexis is dragging Finn and Anna into her middle school girl games she enjoys playing with Julian. Now she has both Finn and Anna acting like middle school kids whose hormones are out of control and dictating their actions. I fully expect Alexis to ask Finn to pass Julian a note in gym class–it’s ridiculous.
Now, I ask you to forgive me, Rebecca for being so critical of your girl, er, your woman. I am just so over Alexis.

    rebecca1 replied

Dear, dear, dear Harry. Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Can you guess what’s coming next? No? I bet you can. I COULDN’T DISAGREE MORE! There. I feel better. Now read on…

First: Why are we all so all-knowing about what a “grown-up” is? Who decides how one should behave in their private life. In their romantic life. In there, dare I say it…sex life? Does sex and the way you decide to have it make you an adult vs, “middle school girl?”

Second: When was the last time we saw Alexis have sex before Julian came along? (not that I care, but in terms of your “accusations”) Alexis hasn’t had a romantic and/or sexual story in years. Matter of fact, Nancy Grahn said she was thrilled that the new writers paired her with Julian because she and the other “women of a certain age” were not being portrayed as sexual women anymore. The fact that that’s changing in so many ways on, at least the three soaps I’m now watching, is great. Kassie DePaiva (Eve) is well into her 50s and is having hot sex with a man (Brady) ten years younger; Anna will eventually have the same with Finn or some other guy. Melissa Reeves is dating Greg Vaughn (in story on DOOL) and she’s about seven years older than him. She’s 51. And obviously hot for “Eric.” To judge a character because she’s a sexual being is so beyond puritanical that it not only astounds me but makes me livid.

Since we’re back to Nancy Grahn, jeeez, this reminds me of the attack on me that’s become an annual event; some of you just can’t let go of zeroing in on this character. It’s insane. What exactly is she doing that is so “juvenile?” What did she do that Anna hasn’t done; did she not pretend that she and Finn were in a relationship and then act “like a schoolgirl” who couldn’t tell him how she really felt? Or Bobby and Lucy being all “sex-kittenish” over Scottie not too long ago?

It’s a soap! That’s first and foremost. I don’t want puritanical. I don’t want to watch buttoned-up, “proper” repressed men and women pretending to be non-sexual ala the Victorian era knowing full well they get their freak on behind closed doors anyway!

Alexis has “regressed?” How? Example? Because all I see is a woman who is going to AA meetings, is back to being a lawyer, a concerned mom who ran for mayor and yeah, still has residual feelings for Julian which she’s trying to fight. If being “mature” means one can’t have conflicting emotions, a sex drive and, the ability to flirt I’ll stay a teenager.

Alexis is the cause of Finn and Anna acting like middle school kids? Really, Harry? What show are you watching? Finn, first and foremost, is a character. And I don’t mean a soap character, I mean a goofy “character.” So, in a sense he always acts rather “juvenile” as he tries to mask his real feelings. Anna? Anna, in my opinion, (and I LOVE her) but, she’s the one who is acting more juvenile than Alexis. She likes Finn, she doesn’t want to tell him, she spudders around when trying to express herself to him like she’s a kid with a crush…I mean, c’mon. And I like it! It’s just two people unsure of each other and afraid of putting their hearts on the line.

Back to Alexis. I see NOTHING, and I mean absolutely NOTHING that Alexis is doing to warrant criticism. She loves Julian, she’s naturally drawn to where he is as he is to her, she’s tryin to fight her feelings which I understand are conflicted and that’s basically it.

And. She went to bed with Finn. And? What…so what? An adult has sex…make that two consenting adults…and that’s a problem? How? That’s “immature”? Juvenile?

Ya know what this comes down to Harry? Viewers judge characters by the way the judge people in real life. What “sits” well with them. I’m not talking about the criminal aspects of the soap…murder, rape, etc. But the morals of its characters. The maturity of its characters, etc.

You see Drew as whiny. I don’t. At all. Many do.
You think “Laura” is mature. She may be, but the character bores the crap outta me.

You see Laura as “grown up.” I see her as old before her time. Alexis, Anna, Lucy, even older characters like Tracy and Bobby are much more vibrant and “sexy.” I see Laura as a school marm; even her scenes in bed made me cringe because she’s just portrayed as so non-sexual it was awkward for me.

I don’t like Kevin and Laura. I know, the majority, on this site I believe, do. But I think she “ages” him. I found him much more “fun” with Lucy. I love Mac and Felicia because they’re ALIVE!!!! When Kevin’s with Laura they’re just grandparents…

So. Do I forgive you? We are family, I’ve got all my sistas with me… Sing with me! hahahahah

We disagree most of the time, Harry. But you’re a good guy and fun to debate with. But…you’re usually WRONG!!!!! ;) (yeah, I know. have at me.) ;)

    Harry replied

Nancy, it felt like Laura was whited out of the episode. Kevin stands next to Lucy and the two engage with Mac and Felicia and it felt like two married couples rehashing the good old days. Bobbie speaks to Scotty about his long lasting rivalry with Luke and we are privy to a flashback of a young Luke talking to a young Bobbie and nary a mention of Laura–it’s as if she didn’t exist.
And on this date, April 1, Genie has still not been offered a contract. She agreed to Frank’s request that she absolve him on Twitter of all wrong doing as far as her departure was concerned. Then there were hints dropped by Frank and Nathan Varni that Laura would be back and there would be a big story for her down the road. And then…nothing. Kin Shriner was fired shortly after the 55th anniversary aired.
I am afraid that what is going on with GH is the same thing which transpired during the last years of OLTL and AMC. ABC wants to anger the older viewers by coolly dismissing the beloved legacy characters, the veterans. Long time viewers will stop watching, the ratings will go down and ABC will have an excuse to cancel their last soap standing. It’s all rather nefarious and purposeful and I am afraid it puts viewers in a lose-lose situation because boycotting GH is a case of cutting of one’s nose to spite one’s face.

Harry, your reasoning makes a lot of sense–I fear what you say will happen will!

    rebecca1 replied

I was thinking that, too, Harry, about how they placed Lucy with Kevin. I hate to say it but I like them together and the history is between those four, so it worked as far as the “nostalgia” goes.

And, coming from the rage against ageism warrior, dare I say it…here goes…Laura seems to age Kevin! LOL!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t help it; she does. He seems too “settled” when he’s with her. Like they’re an old, comfy couple about to share a rocker. When he’s with Lucy, there’s a more lively vibe. (unless of course he’s really his dead twin, that’s a whole ‘nother vibe.)

    rebecca1 replied

Oh, and I agree with your analysis, too, Harry. I think combined with budget constraints (the vets are probably more expensive than the newbies) I do think it could be part of their plan to get rid of GH; lower viewership would justify cancellation; except those of us who see what they’re doing would know WHY the numbers kept going down so what have they achieved (in terms of face).

In terms of Kin, he was used so infrequently that I can’t imagine they’re saving that much. But the though of allocating the budget that pays him and instead going to “Aunt Stella” is ludicrous. I was hoping they’d FINALLY give Scottie a romance; heck, put him back for good with either Lucy or Bobby! (either combo there would be a blast from the past) and give them a place in their hometown! Felicia, Mac, Laura, Scottie, Lucy…they’re all still within arm’s reach and they’re relegated to the archives.

Harry…”Oh.” but ABC has given us a reboot of Roseanne. Just what the world needs now…not.

    Shay replied

@Rose……Whilst a redux of Roseanne may not be what either of us cares to watch…I never even bothered with her original sitcom!..apparently 25 million viewers disagree with our more highbrow tastes, and I have to say, I do find it refreshing that there’s finally a current tv show that’s not steeped in one-sided hate against half of our country’s population. It’s a welcome change indeed, so I actually applaud Ms. Barr for the courage to not follow Hollywood’s “party line” and present something that zings both sides of the political divide in an equal opportunity manner. At least she is pulling in huge ratings numbers….unlike GH!

    Shay replied

@Harry…I second your thumbs up for Laura and Kevin! They were so good together…the real deal, based upon mutual love and respect, unlike some of the more tawdry, superficial couplings we are constantly being force-fed on GH….Need I name names???? It just goes to show what a sad state this soap is in when a substantial, dignified twosome such as Dr. and Mrs. Collins are suddenly torn asunder simply to highlight the ridiculously juvenile antics of so-called adults who refuse to grow up and act their age. (It’s especially appalling to see the usually staid Finn and Anna dragged down to such a degrading and uncharacteristic level….In fact, poor Michael Easton has recently resembled a helpless little schoolboy next to hoochie-granny Alexis….perhaps he has some deep-seated “mommy issues” that are only now presenting themselves? That would explain so much in regards to this most unlikely and unpalatable pairing!)

    rose replied

Hi Shay…I never watched Roseanne before either to speak of. I watched the other night out of curiosity. I think this was the same for a % of the viewers, so we’ll see ratings as the series goes on. What I find interesting is that it was picked up by ABC and not CBS since Sara Gilbert from The Talk was it’s main producer.

I didn’t mind presenting other sides to a story as long as they are not bigoted ones, etc. And I am not familiar with other tv shows that are”steeped in one-sided hate.” Maybe comments from late night comics based on what some tweeters put out there on a daily basis, but I don’t watch them either. But it is because of some of the real Roseanne’s points of view that I will not be watching again. And we know how how personal feelings towards an actor be influenced by their roles on programs.

Found Miranda again the other night by accident. See is a side kick to Melissa McCarthy called “Spy.” A little crazy, but entertaining. Certainly not highbrow. Just what I needed for a laugh.

I know I’m gonna catch it for this but, although I enjoyed the flashbacks, the rest felt like fill time. And someone needed to revamp Carly’s gown. Beautiful fabric but it didn’t fit properly and the split sleeves looked like they needed an assist from the mice from CINDERELLA. Sorry, I was bored.

    0ooh dear Sam-
her only acting gift is crying and sniveling..
If she isn’t crying or sniveling she is an inconsequential character.

They write her for her only expertease, crying.
She has Sniveled and Cried in every scene since telling Drew she loves Jason.
She runny nose cried for 10? minutes while telling Drew, she Cried for another length of time with Jason, she sniveled and was snuffling through her convos with Alexis and everyone else she was within 3 feet of..
(All that runny nose suffling is so nasty.

Sam will be a sniveling runny nose snuffling nose Dreeves throughout the story, god have mercy lots of mercy.

0ohh lawdy! Jason comes off as having an emotional lobotomy / Robot Man.
Sam and Jason are sadly pathetic, nothing there.
Faison needs to return and delet both of them..
LOL 0ohh geez, Carly is an unhinged busybody, a loud annoying one lol the lady needs to be tranquilized bwaa!

    Outside of that..
GH has been good in an uneventful sombor way.

Looking forward to more Mike/Max and his days with family and Franco & Drew and their self discovery journey , Henrik’s outing, and Nelle’s game on Carly. And more Betsy and Jim.

As for the 55th flashbacks, well they hold no meaning to me but still looking forward to the history of the 55th ( yet to watch..
I would have loved to have Luke/Tony back..
GH will not have another 55 but we can enjoy it for a long time to come, and that is a good thing.

Sam’s been crying for years, it’s pathetic. Why do people want Jason with such a weakling? She likes to pretend she is strong, but she isn’t. Pairing her with Jason was the worst thing to happen to Sam. At least Robin, Liz, and even Courtney got to exist outside of him.

I did tune in today and I admit I enjoyed this one-off episode greatly. Random thoughts:

    - Seeing the Stone dying clip again reminded me how handsome Maurice Benard was back then.

    - I tear up anytime I see the “Not Barbara Jean” clip. Kristina Wagner’s best scene ever.

    - Whenever Jason calls Monica “mom” gets me going, too.

    - Glad they showed the scene of Sonny shooting Dante.

    - Mac and Kevin in drag is funny after all these years.

    - No clip of Elizabeth, but what would they choose? Don’t think they wanted to revisit her and Jason, nor pay for a clip of Jonathan Jackson. Lulu also got no clips (but JB really played her most memorable scenes).

    - They spent the money to include clips featuring Steve, Audrey, Jessie, Lucille, Lee, Lila, Edward (David Lewis), Alan, Robin and Luke.

    - No clip not even a mention of Laura! Kevin could’ve said something, but he was too busy trying not to look at Lucy’s lascivious glances. I kept hoping for a surprise shot of Genie Francis at the end.

    Overall, nicely done.

I liked how it was centered around Mike and giving him a fun day. Loved seeing the flashbacks. Made me miss the Quartermaines even more. I realize that Lila and Edward have passed and now Stuart Damon has health issues but they never should have killed off Alan originally. I loved Alan and Monica . How young everyone was in the flashbacks. Mac and Kevin dressed as women, that was when GH was fun. Was hoping to see Scorpio and Holly, one of my favorite couples. I know Tristian is returning but I fear it will be another dull story, probably about Anna’s son. And seeing Luke made me miss Anthony Geary. I was almost hoping Luke would make an appearance that it was his club. Aww, those were the best of times for GH. It will never be the same but I hope it continues for years to come.

Just wish writers had not taken Luke’s airtime and given more to Sonny, Carly and the Morgan story. Will it never end? And featured the name “Lukes” as the place of the reunion. Okay!!! As I mentioned a few times above I LOVED THIS EPISODE! The flashbacks were fantastic; I felt like they did justice to GH history! Not all, of course, unless they can devote more days/episodes. I think it would be great if they used flashbacks sporadically through Mike’s journey. Perhaps as the people in his life tell him stories of his past, or he recalls people before he downward spirals, would be a great way for GH to also visit the past and its beloved characters.

BUT!!! I just heard that Kin Shriner/Scottie has been let go!!!! I am crushed! LOVE Scottie! If anything he should have had more story instead of the occasional pop in. What a way to kill the nostalgic buzz ( I adored the Lee Baldwin/Scotty scene) from this episode by letting go of one of the most charming, remaining vets!

    rebecca1 replied

Hey Soaphound; yes. We’re losing another. They didn’t use Kin in like, forever, which was a missed opportunity to begin with. I loved the few scenes he and Roger had together as father and son and they could have really expanded Scottie’s circle by including Franco, Liz, her boys, and, of course, given him a relationship. He is such a throwback to the early years of the show; one of the few remaining faces of that era left. And yet, he bascially had “cameos.” I honestly don’t think they would have cut him though; I think there was a whole issue of his not being in the 55th promo. He voiced his opinion and it seems to have escalated. Of course, I’m not sure. Just what I’ve pieced together from the few things I ‘ve read. It does seem definitive though that he was blindsided; he’d just days before given an interview talking about what he hoped would be his in his future at GH.

Apparenlty, fan outcry at losing Genie didn’t make too much of a dent if they could follow it up by losing one of her “fiances” from days gone by.

    Sad.

I’m of mixed feelings on the current GH. I realize soaps have traditionally built stories around health issues, and GH and it’s actors are doing a good job of responsibly showing alzheimers and it’s ripple effects to those involved. But I’m looking for more upbeat stories right now, especially in contrast to what’s reported on network news daily. Even combining current with flash blacks doesn’t do it for me right now.

So I guess I will take a more casual interest in GH right now, and take advantage of a beautiful day, a little prep/cleanup/gardentng, and Easter dinner with friends and family. Hope the same for all of you on this holiday weekend.

Many fans are sick and tired of “Frank’s Hospital.” I just don’t see the value in this character. Hello Darling! I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I have been rather sour and blah for too long and desperately trying to pull out of the miasma of despair-speaking of GH- I could care less for Robert Scorpio and I know he is one of your beloved vets-but for me overrated and certainly not a romantic interest for Anna-more like her grandpa! I read through a few of your past comments-that vile Bobbie!!-and laughed out loud. How I wish she would return to her hooker roots-or better yet, as a ruthless madam with a heart of gold-or mold-depending on the situation.
I have found myself loving Max Gail-wish Helena could zap him well and perhaps even a little nudity between the two-would certainly brighten my day. I always found him very sexy on Barney Miller and though he has certainly aged-so have I and we likey. Oh my. Sick of Nelle and the haunting and weirdness and the dragged-out mess of Franco. I read on twitter how someone wished Nikki Smith would have popped out while he was under hypnosis-would have erupted with joy-as there is so little on the show I find entertaining. I thought it was great when Jason first came back-exciting, fast-paced-then right back to boring and contrived and convoluted. Kill Betsy just for the hell of it! It is my understanding Scotty will be killed off defending Franco. This is just wrong. One commentator said they are stripping the show of the vets to get the ratings to drop and justify cancellation in order to produce a cheaper and more profitable show. Who knows?

    Shay replied

You need never apologize for a fashionably late arrival, my dear Phyllis! We all have lives to lead outside of Fairmanville….well, at least most of us do, so I simply consider it a bonus when we are actually able to meet up for a chat! I’m so sorry to hear you have been none too cheery as of late….seems many of us are suffering from a case of the “Port Charles Ennui”….perhaps the sunshine of the season will perk you up, since the senior superspy Robert Scorpio apparently fails to do so. Hey, to each her own, I say….we all have our favorites, but for the record, I’m not looking for a romantic resumption between this legendary charmer and his former love, Anna…I just want someone with a clue to come and clean up the darn town…it really needs a vigorous spring cleaning! Of course, I’m also still rooting for the hapless Finn to come to his senses and quit boytoying it up with Harlotta La Loose….she may be good for some cheap thrills, but “The Divine Devane” is the real deal…plus, this English Rose makes a proper fine cup of tea! What more could the quirky doc and his service lizard ask for? As for Max’s Mike Corbin, a mind is a terrible thing to lose but given he’s Sonny’s father, he probably will remain strong and able in the virility department for some time to come, so perhaps you will get your wish that he’ll find himself a new ladylove with which to frolic now that Rita has dropped him like a hot potato…I’m not so sure that Helena would be that enamored at the prospect of a WojoMoment, but there must be some eligible femme who’s available for this sweetheart of man….how about Bobbie??? She’s been strutting around the 10th floor in her flooziest finery in search of companionship, and it’s certainly not going to be courtesy of Scotty, who’s said to soon be catching a bullet for his trainwreck of a son, Franco….Yet another vet bites the dust! Needless to add, you are so right that Bobbie should be the Belle Watling of Port Charles…she certainly has the necessary experience and her apple probably doesn’t fall too far from the Aunt Ruby entrepreneurial tree….I do believe she could turn Kelly’s into a far more profitable business than its current quick and dirty diner…especially if she gets that equally lusty Lucy to join in the effort, considering she already owns the requisite wardrobe! By the way, I’m glad you appreciated my previous comments regarding this character…as you may have noticed, I’ve been catching some grief over my vivid descriptions of certain GH-ers…but I ask you, have I been factually wrong? No, no, and NO! Oh, and you know what, PhylIis? I never fully appreciated how truly conniving and evil Nurse Spencer was in her salad days of seduction….I always heard she was “Hot to trot for Scott” back in the day, however, I failed to realize that she had tried to set up the fragile Laura for a trip to the hoosegow in order to clear the pathway to the Baldwin boudoir, well, at least not until I watched a vintage episode on YouTube….that was a bit before my time, so it was a shock to see what a nasty, maneating piece of work Bobbie really was in the beginning!!! No wonder Nelle gets her in such a tizzy….she reminds her of her younger self! Anyway, I enjoyed Jason’s return, too…it’s just a shame he didn’t beat a hasty retreat from Sonny and Carly’s doorstep…their reunion was every bit as cliche’ and predictable as expected. But he’s still oh so nice to look at in all his “Stonecold Glory!”…Well, “My Fair Phyllis,” as always with our all-too-brief conversations, the time has flown by and lunch has arrived…..my treat! Stay or go, it’s your call!!!! Either way, have a great day!

Love lunch, dear! Too much, I fear. I look forward to warmer days and getting out more and dropping several pounds. I saw Jeanne Cooper in a brunette wig on Perry Mason last week and thought of you-not in a brunette wig-or perhaps?-
I never really got into Perry Mason, but I am giving him another chance once in awhile. Who knew Hamilton Burger was fired from the show after being busted at an adult party in LA? Scandalous! Sometimes the backstories are much more intriguing.
I have started watching The Rifleman and Wagon Train- I watched one Wagon Train last week that was written by Frank and Doris Hursley. Some excellent writing and acting in both shows. I have really become enamored with The Fugitive. Who knew? It only comes on once a week and I am going to look for the DVDs. I find it like an excellent soap-and each episode his involvement with different people-good and bad-love it.
I am way beyond the ideal demographics desired by advertisers-although I do try and buy new products-despite what they may think. When I started watching soaps decades ago, I did not tune in to see what other kids or teens were doing. I was hooked on the adults and their goings-on-the good and the bad. The only teen/young adult story that I can remember really interested me was Jenny Gardener and Greg. and Liza and the lengths Liza went to in order to win over Greg.
I keep hoping the rumors of Scott’s demise are false- I enjoy the flawed characters who are neither goody-good or irredeemable. Why Bobbie can’t find herself utterly broke and out of a job-especially since she just stands around and gossips-like the real Amy-and open a brothel in the brownstone is beyond me. When is the last time any soap had a good hooker story? Why did we have Man Landers? What did we learn from it or find entertaining?
I do know if they had wagon trains now, I most certainly would sign on. Off to a new frontier! Just imagine how those wagon trains were filled with outcasts and n’er do wells and hookers and sociopaths hoping for love and gold and a good hot bath. Lots of funky plagues and diseases though yet to see the herpes or STD episode- and surely those were around then?
I need Nelle to lose her baby and a few teeth and then find true love before I can really care about her. I want Dr. O back and using her twisted mind towards some new and delicious scheme-and if Brad is her sidekick, all the better. I am tired of Franco and Faison’s son that none one interesting story is taking place within the confines of the hospital. I have given up hope for a glimpse of Heather-and a glimpse of Heather locked up is never satisfying anyway. I have pretty much abandoned Bold and Beautiful. for a good while I was delighted, but now miss two weeks, miss nothing, really. I even made the bold move to tune into Days of Our lives one day, but with no clue of what was going on. I’m going to need another martini and some more bread, please.

    Shay replied

Passing you the bread basket as we speak, my dear Phyllis! As for the martinis? It’s a three per lunch limit….time to cut you off….how about a Perrier with a lime twist? That’s my go-to, always has been and I have perfect recall of all my college parties and club nights because of that! Anyway….I do believe Miss Cooper once mentioned she was a regular on the Western tv show circuit back in the day….not my particular genre of choice, but yes, I think I saw her on an old PM, too. Wasn’t she a showgirl? I also caught the ice queen herself, Miss Constance Towers on another episode of that program…she was every bit as fab and glam as her elegant Helena, right down to her white gloves and pillbox hat, but apparently I’’m not allowed to express my admiration for this legendary lady…it offends! (Oh, by the way, no wigs for me…or extensions either…I am a full headed natural honey-bronze bronde, so you were halfway right on the brunette part!) At any rate, I was probably one of the few who never liked Jenny G….I was always Team Liza…MW had a lot of spunk and also made a great Eden Capwell! I am 1000% with you on Bobbie becoming Port Charles’ answer to Miss Kitty….a little Gunsmoke lingo for you there, Phyllis! She seems pretty pointless just roaming around the 10th floor and constantly griping with her daughter Carly about Nelle this and Nelle that…Now if only a modern-day version of Marshal Matt Dillon would ride into town on his white horse—-how about Frisco Jones?—they might be able to actually rid the town of all of its annoying, useless, irredeemable characters and bring back some interesting villains with real bite for him to challenge to a duel! (And speaking of dark-hatted ones, I miss Dr. O., too…she and her daughter Britt were the only new characters in the past five years that were interesting and funny to boot! They both need to return to make more mischief….STAT! As for Brad, his upcoming(?) “Mr. Mom” act should be hysterical, although I’m not sure he is cut out for fatherhood…it might cramp his snarky style! We simply can’t have that…..) Incidentally, I agree that Heather should be more than a mere glimpse in the cuckoo’s nest every now and then…she definitely deserved to be part of this whole Drew and Franco fiasco instead of that dizzy Betsy. Since they are both completely loose with the truth, why not get the champ at concocting tall tales to come up with another humdinger of a story about her son of a Baldwin’s sketchy beginnings? I still suggest that Heather be let out on day-release to work at Kelly’s…What’s the worst that could happen there? She might slip LSD into the iced tea and eat them out of BLT sandwiches….but that could be fun, and with Scott biting the dust, she should be there to comfort her distraught offspring, not to mention, babysit for Liz’s new bundle of joy—-boy can that girl reproduce!—-plus, Audrey is certainly too old to take on another grandchild to watch, she’s already up to her neck in boys, boys, boys! Hope the next one is a girl! Okay, lunch is officially done…dessert? I’ll split one with you since we are both figure-conscious gals…chocolate lava cake, creme caramel, New York cheesecake or what? Anything but tiramisu will do for me! By the way, next time we’re doing afternoon tea and it’s on you! Lastly, your wise presence and counsel is required on the 55th anniversary thread…I already responded to you there, so once you’ve recovered from those three martinis, please scurry on over and give us your expert take on the situation! Until then, toodles!

I have never cared for westerns or the genre myself-at all. But the acting and writing on some is exceptional. Remember Richard Dean from Six Million Dollar Man- no idea he became part of Perry Mason cast-or that William Hopper was Hedda Hopper’s son (Paul Drake on the show and what a stud.)

I am probably the most liberal person you have bought lunch for. You and I disagree on many things-and agree on some. Even though I may not agree with you, I certainly respect your opinions and have no agenda to try and change them. I may ask questions, but only in an earnest effort to obtain I better understanding. I did this awhile back with “friends” that have known me for years. I merely asked a question regarding immigration- and was immediately attacked as being a racist. I’m not, but I will learn to keep my big mouth shut-which is a shame, because I feel a lot of people have questions or want to have a conversation about current events and it seems immediate that these are shut out with claims of racism or other name-calling designed to shame or silence any who may have a differing outlook or are trying to make informed decisions and not just accepting what they are told is the correct behavior. In many ways, you are Enid Nelson, prim and proper, and I am Opal Gardener-tramp and schemer. I loved Liza and her scheming against Jenny-but loved Jenny, too. Loved Greg more. Yes. You have a delicious wit and way with words and I truly enjoy reading your posts.
As far as the troubles and feuds in Fairman Valley, I am staying out of them. I don’t see them as ever ending. I have no idea how many “alters” there are that come to life to join the fray. I did glance over some of the latest and it just seems like more of the same old same old with some new names tossed in and some instigators and the usual likely suspects. I don’t need that or want that inside me. I certainly was pissed-off at the nemesis, but if truth be told, and I am doing my best, I wish there were no feuds, as I have found myself in agreement with her on many things-especially the pairing of Laura and Kevin-which I also thought was a huge mistake and most others did not want to hear that at all. I know there are hurt feelings all the way around and new crimes and misdemeanors and new characters coming into Fairman Village wanting to align, malign and stir the pot. I’m not willing or wanting to join that party. I don’t want to hurt anyone or be mean-except perhaps in criticising the shows or plots or characters and if that sets anyone off, oh pardon me. Can’t wait to see the new site and hope it has some exciting new features.

Tons of vets weren’t shown who spent years on the show. Where was video to honor Laura, Leslie and Rick, Robert Scorpio, Sean Donnelly, Tiffany, Holly, Patrick Drake, Brenda,Tony.
Jones, AJ., Georgie, Tracy, Lucky, Nicholas, etc. There should have been a video montage at the end. Very disappointing.

    Happy Anniversary GH!

Would have loved to have Genie/Laura on with flashbacks!

It was nice to see the flashbacks we did see… could have been more!

    But overall nicely done!

Best thing about the episode – no Frodd or Ava stinking it up.

Worst thing about it – No Luke or Laura…. Hell, Laura didn’t even make the flashbacks. What’s up with that??

thee disrespect is in “our” face. the opening and ending monologue with Maurice Benard. ???? WTF

Frank Valentini has gone and fired the heart and soul.

the passion is obliterated : no more Scotty Baldwin and Laura Webber.

I wanted to barf.. from the get go… so everything thus… is lost

Maurice Benard has risen to top of the heap… every thing that GH means

Frank Valentini, Jean, Shelley, Chris have gone and done it… DEAD ON ARRIVAL

Again, Patrick, you are correct on all counts. I’m truly disgusted with the state of affairs at GH, as you’ve outlined. The 55th anniversary show was a travesty…

You’re right on all counts but Jean hasn’t been with the show since last summer so none of this is on her shoulders.

The flashbacks were great. I used to watch GH a long time ago and then I stopped. After Guiding Light went off, I switched back to GH and I haven’t stopped. Yes, there are some stories that I don’t care for, but if you are a “fan” of the show, you stick with it no matter what. Just the same as you do for your favorite football team, basketball or baseball team. You don’t throw in the towel when stories are told that you don’t care for. Hopefully Genie will return. I really think it’s in the works.

Hope you’re right–but we are all guarded about getting our hopes up in light of the 55th anniv. show and no sign–nor mention–of Laura? Consider for a moment the incongruity of that statement. But there WAS a glimpse of TG when he was brought on to break up Scotty and Laura. HMMMMM! Guarded, indeed! :(

Well, Genie is on vacation with her husband in Paris and meanwhile, an investigative reporter with Showbiz 411 says he called GF’s agent and he says there is no deal in the works with GH. So that tells us everything we need to know. Now Kin Shriner says he’s ‘out’ on Twitter. I see no evidence that TPTB are working on anything to do with Genie and plenty to the contrary.

Was late for the gym, saw first five minutes of the ?????anniversary show. Saw they repeated Dante is as dumb as a rock, father shot him and did he say he likes him . A cop who commits perjury, I left. When I give up and try watching Frank never disappoints. Thanks all, Guess I didn’t miss anything except for the Felicia saying , not Barbara Jean. Guess I could find it on you tube if I was interested. I am not. I will never be sorry to see this show go, I am sorry every time I try watching it. Why do TPTB think or not think all we want is the mob and molls. Summer is coming, and sunshine is mine. If you still love it enjoy. I can’t

I meant to reply sooner, Janet. Brilliant analysis! I concur on all points, particularly when you write, “I will never be sorry to see this show go, I am sorry every time I try watching it.” They long ago ruined GH with the Sonny angle and mob focus.

And I like your nod to the big picture of summer and sunshine… :)
