21 January 12th, 2011 TV Guide Canada’s Soap Opera Spirit Award Nominations announced!

The fourth annual TV Guide Canada Soap Opera Spirit Award nominations were announced today in 20 categories including Outstanding Soap Opera, Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress and Outstanding Performance by a Duo among other key categories.   This year for the first time web soaps have been included and integrated into the categories with the daytime soaps.  Thus, Venice received 15 nods, while the most nods went to General Hospital with 27.

The winners will be revealed by TV Guide Canada’s Nelson Branco  in major categories for the first time on our second annual SOS Awards Presentation on the On-Air On-Soaps Podcast coming your way on Monday, March 7th.  So stay tuned for special guest co-hosts and extra special podcast surprises.

The eligibility period for consideration for an SOS nomination is for episodes between Jan 1, 2010 through to Dec 31, 2010.  The nominees for Outstanding Soap Opera are, The Bold and the Beautiful, General Hospital, One Life to Live, Steamboat and The Young and the Restless.  Nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress went to: Debbi Morgan, All My Children, Laura Wright, General Hospital, Florencia Lozano, One Life to Live, Crystal Chappell, Venice, Michelle Stafford, The Young and the Restless and Melody Thomas Scott, The Young and the Restless.

Nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor went to James Scott, Days of our Lives, Maurice Benard, General Hospital, Trevor St. John, One Life to Live, Jerry verDorn, One Life to Live, Eric Braeden, The Young and the Restless, and Michael Muhney, The Young and the Restless.

And for Outstanding Performance by a Duo: Elizabeth Hubbard and Larry Bryggman, As the World Turns,  Eric Sheffer-Stevens and Van Hansis, As the World Turns, Susan Flannery and Katherine Kelly Lang, The Bold and the Beautiful, Suzanne Rogers and John Aniston, Days of our Lives, Steve Burton and Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo, General Hospital, Michael O’Leary and Michael Park, Steamboat, Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leccia, Venice, and Billy Miller and Amelia Heinle, The Young and the Restless.

    Nelson Branco is so biased and too often nominates his favorites even if they don’t have reels to present for their nominations. Van Hansis should have been nominated in the Supporting Actor category, not Jon Hensley, for example: Jon is a talented actor but hadn’t real amazing scenes during 2010. Van Hansis has so many amazing scenes and very gut-wrenching episodes! But Nelson chose Jon because he loves Jon and dislikes Van. That’s a well-known fact actually. Nelson never nominated Van in one of his bast acting ranking lists. This Branco is the worst soap journalist out there.

    I agree that Van should have been nominated.He is such a wonderful actor and makes every emotion believable .Van should get many awards for his acting in 2010 and he should have years ago.Not only is he a great actor but he’s such a great guy! And it doesn’t hurt that he’s got the best smile and best face anywhere !Do I love him?……You bet !!!!!!

    When I posted before i hadn’t read the list….i cannot believe Jon Hensley ( who is a fine actor) was nominated for best supporting actor and Van Hansis wasn’t ? What ATWT was Mr. Branco watching…he could not have been watching what we were to omit Van.This was Vans year….he was so wonderful.What is Nelson Brancos problem ? Anybody who watched ATWT in 2010 knows that Vans acting was superb in every way….with or without Eric.Shame on you nelson branco….please never refer to yourself as a journalist .

    Really Ducourage? I agree that Branco’s biased w/ Brandon Beemer, Haiduk, Farah Fath, Crystal Chappell, John Paul Lavosier, Muhney, Carlivati, Brad Bell, Nadia Bjorlin, Valentini, B&B, OLTL, etc when I used to read his blogs and I also agree that Branco’s the worst soap reporter. When I used to read his blogs, he’d often write very unflattering things abt Ellen Wheeler, P&G, Christopher Goutman, Barbara Bloom, etc. What made you think that he’s biased against Hansis?

    bottomchef….did you read the list? To put Jon Hensley from ATWT in the best Supporting actor category and omit Van Hansis is really a slap in the face.While I like Jon this was Vans year and there was no comparison between these two actors.Unfortunately people do have their favorites and sometimes it clouds their judgement as in Mr. Brancos case.I’m a long time viewer of ATWT and I will say again Van was brilliant in 2010…He was a joy to watch and so many people agree….read any of the blogs…..

    mmc they’re not actual awards though. Outstanding female actor in a new role or recast is an actual category according to someone that wrote on this message board. Hello, what kind of category is that?! Then practically anyone can get nominated.

    Van Hansis and Eric Sheffer Stevens for outstanding performance by a duo….absolutely!As a long time soap viewer, i can honestly say there has NEVER been a couple(duo) like them and i don’t think there ever will be again!These are two of the finest actors ever and i wish someone would come along and give each of them a fabulous part.

    YES James Scott nominated love it, James Scott is one of the best actors i’ve ever seen because he’s so believable, unpredictable and talented, I just can’t turn it off. He deserves it. I really hope the voters see his work, He was all over the scale in what emotion he had to portray, and he kept nailing it scene after scene. He carries scenes much better than people give him credit.

    ITA!! James is outstanding, dedicated, believable, true to his craft and an absolute joy to watch. I just wish that the writers would see the treasure that they have not utilized in James and in addition to his chemistry with Alison.

    Congrats James you are a brilliant actor and it definitely shows on the screen!

    Also as a teacher THANK YOU for supporting Love Bully it means a lot to us educators whom see it daily in our classrooms, thanks!

    Can I get an “AMEN” for lead actress nominee, “Melody Thomas Scott”!? This is soooooo long overdue! She makes the most of every scene she’s in and delivered a genuine, tour-de-force performance as the ever-struggling, orgasmic vodka swilling, original desperate housewife, Nikki Newman! If there’s any justice, MTS will win this one and win the biggest award at this year’s Emmy telecast. It will be a triumph not seen since La Lucci won her first Emmy. Emmy voters, are you listening?!

    Bjorlin most probably would because biased tvgc always pushes for her. Chloe has been a terrible char and Bjorlin has been atrocious as Chloe since she was being called ghoul girl on Days. But as w/ many of Branco’s faves, their acting, despite how terrible, is always praised.

    Crap.Naid always did an amzing job as Chloe,no matter how crapy the writimg was sometimes.And now she is given good material on Venice allowing her to finally have more people seeing how amazingly talented she is.You don’t like her acrting, fine,it doesn’t make her less talebnted.

    Venice did not begin 2010. So Bjorlin’s char is not new/recast. Therefore, she should not even be nominated. The argument abt her lack of talent aside, she should not be nominated based on eligibility. Also, there are so many categories: actor, actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, younger actor, younger actress, duo, new/recast actor, new/recast actress. It takes away from a nomination when practically anyone can get a nom bec of all the categories. Majority if not all of the people on goldderby Daytime forums disagree w/ you, dislike Bjorlin’s “acting” on Days and consider her acting/storyline the weakest.

    Well watching Nadia Bjorlin on Days and Venice is like night and day. I do not know if she is just bored with her DOOL character and storyline or what but she is painful to watch and it is not just the character. Yes she has no chemistry with her current on screen love interest, Shawn Christian and Chloe is a moron but you are paid to give 100% to every performance and she just does not do that on DOOL. That is why when I found out she was going to be cast on Venice, I shuddered. She has been a pleasant surprise. Her material is much better on Venice and her performance is much more watchable although she still have room for improvement. As far as the nomination, Nadia was a recast for the role of Lara. The role was originally supposed to be played by Elizabeth Keener. Venice Season 1 began in very late December 2009 but ended in 2010. The eligibility period for these awards are January to December 2010.

    That doesn’t make Bjorlin a recast though. From what you wrote, Keener was originally supposed to be on Venice, but she never did portray that role. Many actors were originally supposed to portray Daytime parts. But if they don’t assume those roles and someone else/a second choice does, that doesn’t make the second choice actor a recast. Therefore, since the role is not a 2010 recast and is also not a 2010 new role, then there should be no nomination.
