179 February 25th, 2011 VOTE: Daytime Emmy Snub Poll: Who Deserved a Pre-Nom, but didn’t get in?

Courtesy/NATAS

The 38th Annual Daytime Emmy Pre-Nominations were just announced and several key daytime performers who turned out quality work were conspicuously missing from the final Pre-Nomination ballot.

So now that many soap pundits and fans are in a justified uproar, we throw this question out to you for in our poll of the week, “Who deserved a Daytime Emmy Pre-Nom, but didn’t get in?”  Now remember this is based on those performers who were pre-selected on the first round ballot which was the pre-pre nominations! So only those performers were eligible in the first place to make it through to this round.

You can vote only for ONE candidate, so pick the one performer that you are most upset did not score a nomination.  You can only vote ONCE from One IP Address. Votes will be tabulated and announced next week at On-Air On-Soaps. Voting ends and the poll closes at Midnight Monday Night, February 28th, Pacific Standard Time.

OK, let’s go to the polls! Cast your vote after the jump and then leave a comment on who you picked and why.  We have also given you the OTHER option, if you feel someone else’s absence off the ballot upset you the most.

I mentioned earlier the HORROR that was the omission of Melody Thomas Scott, but I failed to recognize another complete MIND-BOGGLING omission: Stacy Haiduk on the Young and the Restless. Ms. Haiduk was absolutely RIVETING to watch as she seamlessly went from portraying the cool and collected Dr. Emily Peterson to the fury of a completely out-of-touch-with-reality Patty Williams. Melody and Stacy were definite VIP’s in my book and MVP’s in Genoa City in 2010. They have both won my personal award for best actress in a lead role!! Congratulations to you both on a fantastic job!! U are amazing!!

I feel Crystal Chappell’s return to DOOL breathed some life back into the show.Even though lately her storyline has stalled, she always made the most of what she was given. Also, I feel her presense has made other actors on the show bring their best, such as Molly Burnett and Nadia Bjorlin. I loved the chemistry between CC and Louise Sorel also.Thank you.

    Lisa replied

Her story being BORING is all on the writers at DOOL, but that says nothing about her skills as an actress. No matter what crap the story is, she graciously makes the best of it and puts on a great performance. Definitely the biggest snub on the list.

    Michele replied

CC is at the top of her game. She definitely brings out the best in those that are in scenes with her. Days failure is to give her a storyline that highlights her talent. What do you expect when all they write are about clones, kidnapping, organ stealing and people attacking under the influence of sleeping pills….very realistic?! I agree she make the best out of the crap she is given. Hoping the new storyline is realistic and of some quality!

  11. Craig says:

I thought the category was ” Best Actress”. What was Kelly Monaco nominated for? Her outstanding impression of an woman trying to wave a plane in for a landing? The woman does nothing but flail her arms, flip her hair and look for her lines posted on the ceiling. Worst actress on daytime.

I have to agree. Though there may have been years with more substance to make a nod believable, I wouldn’t say 2010 stretched her chops at all. Maybe it’s because they the show has only 2 lead females that she got the nomination? Either way, I can’t say I’ve ever been impressed with KM’s performances except when she was a ‘bad’ girl. Rather liked her then and she kept her arms at her sides mostly.

I think Eric Braden and Melody Thomas Scott should have been in pre-noms; however, MM as Adam, no way. He has been the downfall of Sharon Case and Y & R. This hated character needs to leave GC. Many have stopped watching because of this character.

    Stephanie replied

I am torn on MM. As a character I am no fan of Adam, because this Adam and Sharon pairing makes me sick. But MM as an actor is another story. As an actor he plays the villian well and was a key player in the year’s biggest storylines (such as they were).

But out of everyone I still go with Eric Braden and Melody Thomas Scott. Both of them have given flawless performances and deserved to be recognized.

    Jasmine replied

To me MM as an actor is nothing special. The villain he portrayed is beyond redemption and, in my. Opinion, has caused the show great harm. I don’t think MM’s portrayal was any better than the original actorEXCEPT, when MM took over, the blindness seems to come and go. Nothing against the actor, I just think he has been forced on the viewers, so he has been on a lot BUT his performance was nothing special.

It is an absolute travesty that Dominic Zamprogna did not receive a pre-nomination for an Emmy. His performances all year were intense, emotional, riveting, dramatic; they were subtle, nuanced, quiet; they were funny; they were romantic; they were strong — in other words, he ACTED every day in every show — he gave 110% every time he was on screen. He has incredible chemstry with his love interest, but also with his other co-stars. I think the man could have chemistry with a tree he is so good. How he wasn’t nominated for just the Sonny shooting his son episode alone is beyond belief…but he performed that well in every other episode he appeared in. He draws you to GH like a magnet…he is magnificent and I hope he knows this was a political screw over…it is certainly not because he isn’t talented.

I must agree, for the Best Actress Female prenoms, hands down it should have been Laura Wright and Kimberly McCullough.

Kim and Jason Thompson consistently gave stellar performances during the entire Fatal Attraction storyline. The clincher being when Patrick finally told Robin that he slept with Lisa. Those scenes alone should be what moves both actors to the final five of Best Actor and also on the reel for Best Writing.

I don’t understand exactly how the Emmy process works but it sure seems messed up when an actress who never had a storyline that gave her a lead role throughout the year can be nominated into the Lead category and the actress who carried a fabulous story AS THE LEAD CHARACTER OF THE STORY gets passed over.

Maybe it’s stuff like this that has added to the downfall of daytime. It sure couldn’t possibly help.

She was just amazing during the reveal and after. Even today she had me crying for Robin.

She had the material and worked it beyond what it could be. I felt for Robin. Even non Scrub fans were complimenting her work and thought she had it sewn up and then nothing.

This is just insulting as a viewer.

The whole process. How can you pre nom when you never saw the work? Sounds like it is more politics or popularity of who GH wants to wim. Which still has me baffled as to why ABC and GH wouldn’t want to submit Kimberly’s work with her getting the best chance of any other women on GH who is submitted,

I am very disappointed Susan Lucci was not nominated this year. She has a very difficult role; many people think it is her because she is Erica Kane but those in the know will recognize Lucci is not Erica Kane. Very different people which goes to her credibility as an actress. The writers could help Lucci but she has done some amazing work this past year with her daughters on the show and even her dealing with her mother who she misses. She is a very under rated actress.

    Reply

    imasoapfan replied

I agree, I think Susan Lucci did some truly moving work this year: Palmer’s death, her reunion with her friend/enemy Brooke, saying goodbye to Adam, missing her mother Mona, the campy “Dorothy” scenes, and her struggles to keep her daughters safe and happy.

    Reply

    Markus replied

Sadly, the soap opera genre tends to skew itself to the younger market. I’m in my thirties and admit Lucci looks great for any age. But they seem to give her more of a supporting role to her daughters often when she still has the “it” qualities. Lucci in my opinion is at a disadvantage – to the world she is Erica Kane and Erica Kane is over the top, out of this world with a bit of camp. Still if you look at Lucci’s performance they remain true to the character – multi faceted as we see but she is one in a billion she IS Erica Kane. A lot of people whether it be jealousy or what don’t get it. It’s such a strong or well known role that people can’t see past Susan Lucci the character versus the actor. And when people see Lucci in other projects even Dancing with the Stars they want Erica Kane. That shouldn’t be seen though that she is a “worse” actress because the campiness and such is Erica Kane the character. Really she must be a great actress considering the actress appears to be quite the opposite of the character.

In the end, I hope the award for supporting goes to MCE, so theres part of me thats glad Kim didnt get selected as she would have been MCE’s biggest competition. Now she just has to get past NLG.

    EricasEvilTwin replied

An actor is NOT eligible for a pre-nom if they didnt first make the list of individuals under consideration. I jokingly called that the pre pre nom list because thats really what it is. If becky wasnt on that list, then she wasnt going to make this list either, no matter HOW anyone FEELS about it. You can FEEL she should have made THAT list, but once she didnt, she no longer became eligible. Conversely both Kim and Florencia actually made that list of eligible actors but did not make the cut for an actual pre-nom. Dont blame me, I didnt create the system but thats how it seems to work. And I would think if she were actually the Queen of soaps she would have made both lists – just sayin.

    toy1975 replied

Thanks so much for your comments and your passion on the performances last year of Rebecca Herbst. Unfortunately, Rebecca also did not make it on the pre-pre nomination list. And, as I explained in the opening of the Snub Poll Post, The votes should be for those who made the first cut and then did not get to the Pre-Nom round. So just an FYI- Rebecca was not in the running from the beginning. Was not sure you were clear about that and how this poll is structured.
    Hope that makese sense,

I cannot believe that Kimberly McCullough was snubbed. The confession scenes between her and JT were phenomenal, and I think they both deserved to be up for it (Congrats to JT!). I think it’s pretty clear that JMB is up there again simply because she’s on all the time, rather than her actual acting ability. Don’t get me wrong, she’s good – but her scenes were not nearly as powerful as Kimberly’s this year.

There were a few snubs this year that pissed me off.

First of all, Kimberly McCullough. I was actually thinking about it, and while she is a supporting actress on the show, she probably would have been pre-nominated if she submitted as a lead. I have been trying to think about what Nancy Lee Grahn did last year and certain scenes did come to mind; Julie Marie Berman was harder to remember. I kind of had a feeling that JMB was a shoe-in because of her “Younger Actress” win last year. I would have loved to see a tie between the three, though. And then all three nominated, because frankly they are all talented enough. Frankly I think the nominations for that category should have been: Julie Marie Berman, Tricia Cast, Melissa Claire Egan, Nancy Lee Grahn and Kimberly McCullough.

Dominic Zompronga is, to me, only a slightly glaring omission. Yes, he was good; however, he was no better than Jonathan Jackson or Jason Thompson. And given the amount of airtime, I was actually surprised that Dominic did not submit in the lead actor category.

Florencia Lozano is a huge omission to me. She carried and lead great story all year. To me, Kassie DePiva was supporting Florencia’s story and Gina Tognoni – wait? What? Kelly Cramer did something besides chem test last year? Why don’t I remember this?

The Erika Slezak, Nic Robuck, Crystal Chappell, Suzanne Rogers, and David Canary omissions did not upset me all that much. I mean, yeah, some of them should have gotten a pre-nom, but I understand why they didn’t. (And if I can be frank for a second: against Eddie Alderson and David Gregory, did anyone really think Nic Robuck was going to get a pre-nom?)

The Y&R Quad is disgusting. It makes me sick that those four deserving actors are not getting the recognition they deserve. Stacy Haiduk, Melody Thomas Scott, Eric Braeden, and Michael Muhney – three of you are so awesome, and I would have loved to see you be nominated. The fourth, not so much. Even if you did deserve it as well.

. . . while I am sad about a few omissions, I am still looking forward to the ongoing process. It is all very exciting.

And just some food for thought. Does anyone think they should up the number of pre-noms next year (to, like, three or four per show) since their will be only six soaps eligible? :-(
    I do.

What could or has Kelly Monaco even done to be in anything. She has not even had a story since 2005 let alone was backburned most of 2010. Is there now a catagory for fetching drinks, or being filler, or better yet a catagory for the worse actress in daytime who can not act or even pronunciate? Because if there is… She has this viewers vote. Brian Frons at work. It’s DTWTS all over again. What a joke this show has become. With all the talented crew and they give us the garbage!

Ahhh the Liz fans are still jealous over Kelly’s DWTS win LOL. Kelly is a lead and she had story handling Kristina’s abuse – trying to protect her, coping with her unresolved issues with Alexis and sorting through the feelings that were stirred up remembering her own domestic assault experiences. She also had story with jason dealing with michael, again reliving some of her experiences with violence, and coping with jason leaving her – showing her growth over the last few years that she was able to deal with his absence without falling apart. Moreover, she made the pre prenom list, which seems to indicate her costars found her worthy.

Ahhh a fan of the flappy armed Sam who has delusions of grandeur for their favorite hooking mob thuget. How sad the pathetic win at DWTS over what 6 years ago. LOL. I guess the little wins are all you have. I love how you fantasized and embellished the lackluster storylines handed to Sam in the last year. What was it you said she “helped Kristina heal from her abuse”. You mean she ran off and kicked and beat on a man who was innocent, and demanded Jason kill him. That what two days worth of airtime KeMo got with more arm flapping than the entire cast of Black Swan did on stage. What else was it you said she “dealt with her own feelings of domestic assault”, ah yes when she robbed her husband blind of all his assets and he caught her. When she killed him and claimed abuse to cover the crime. What that was a five minute conversation. Her helping Jason deal with Michael meant getting him a booty call at prison. Sam fans sure like to pretend she is more than a thug who is a convenient booty call. GH has a history and a reputation of insisting on who gets votes on their cast. A lead CARRIES a storyline she doesn’t SUPPORT one. At best KEMO flaps her way into a supporting role BUT lead NOT ON her best day FLAPPING can she fly into that. TIIC at GH continue to show what MORONS they are and the ratings are backing that up.

There is no “agenda” – because the soaps themselves no longer control the Pre-Nom voting process. Anybody can submit now, they don’t have to be submitted by the show. The in house voting only counts for a small part of the Pre-Nom process now. They started doing this last year to avoid on-set politics, cries of favoritism, and to refute the old “popularity contest” argument.

I am most shocked about Kimberly McCullough. SHE saved GH last year with it’s only really successful story line. Actors had their moments within scenes but Kimberly did much more than give us one driving scene. She sustained that emotion and defined Scrubs storyline beginning with the confession scene. I was not shocked that Rebecca Herbst was ignored. I think her employers truly unappreciated her. However, her scenes with Shirley when Shirley passed was one of the most moving performances for me of last year.

Shocked not to see Crystal Chappell on the list. She’s by far one of the best actresses ever in daytime, and does so much with so little. Her performances are always multi-layered and raw with passion. The woman is a powerhouse. Obviously, Days of Our Lives has chosen to favor their pets over Chappell but even their bias can’t stop the talent that CC has.

The Emmy’s this year, for me, will be about seeing Jonathan Jackson take it home for Supporting Actor. That young man never fails to leave me in awe. He is out of this world amazing. Really pulling for him.

He carried GH from his debut in June 2009 through the epic Sonny shoots Dante/Dante is Sonny’s son reveal continuing on in 2010 and now into 2011! I am sure that episode will be a classic right up there close to Luke and Laura’s wedding on GH.

Emmy’s have lost all crediblity-yet another so-called ‘talent’ awards show reduced to nothing but politics and chronyism. I wish GH nominees well, but will NOT be watching in protest. Would love it if you could reveal the names of the nominating committee.

Where is the People’s Choice for soaps? Time for FANS to have their say-they are the ones that watch day after day and can judge a body of work not a single episode. Any way you, Michael Fairman, can help us spearhead this? What can we as fans do to have input in making this a more meaningful, accurate assessment of recognition?

The same goes for Jeanne Cooper. She is a great actress, but she did not have the material this year. Melody Thomas Scott , Stacy Haiduk and Eric Braeden very overlooked and it makes no sense to me. The nomination should not be based on how well you are liked by your cast mates, but on your talent.

The most overlooked had to be Stacy Haiduk. Playing both Emily Peterson and Patty Williams was just a tour-de-force by Ms. Haiduk. She held Y&R for all last year with her dual role. Why she wasn’t nominated….oh, wait I forgot. These awards shows aren’t about who deserves it, but who’s 1) more popular and 2) the money that passes under the table between pulicists and others involved in the awards themselves. It’s not about integrity, if so than Vanessa Marcil wouldn’t have won for six months worth of work she didn’t earn. We all know the power of Fronsie. I mean, look at Natalia Livingston, easily one of the worst actresses in daytime other than Kelly Monaco and she won for Emily on GH despite the fact the original and only Emily, Amber Tamblyn, was never nominated for anything. How’s that one fair. Also not fair, Michelle Stafford constantly getting nominated but particularly the year that Tamara Braun was up in 2003, that was her year between the Panic Room story and the Carly/Lorenzo Alternate Reality storyline. Talk about people who’ve been left out.

IMO, Scott Evans and Brett Claywell should both have had Emmy nods. Scott did phenominal work as Oliver Fish both in 2009 and 2010 and brought out every emotion one could imagine ever having within themselves. Such a shame that such quality actors were thrown under the bus for the gawd-awful GIGI (Farah Fath)! If OLTL thinks that viewers don’t know WHY Kish was dumped, they better think again! It’s one of the reasons they lost so many viewers when Kish was “let go” and even more of a reason why very few of those viewers returned to the show! FF, plain and simply, SUCKS! They trashed an incredible storyline just because FF wanted more “airtime” and because her fiance is a favorite golfing buddy of Mr. Frons. And what FF and JPL want, one would assume they get! Mr. Frons is the one that should have been “thrown under the bus” as this was not the first time he has done something like this. (Remember Sabine Singh getting the shaft so the REAL Greenpea could return to AMC?) Well, obviously the REAL Greenpea has been a total bust as well and didn’t help AMC one bit! (I quit watching that show 2 years ago for that very reason).

There were about 5-6 quality actors/actresses that were dumped from OLTL this past year, all for a bunch of nobodies with no talent. All the Ford family needs to go …… they add nothing to the show AT ALL and are nothing more than “eye candy” for Frank Valentini! (Nobody will convince me otherwise). And Gigi (Farah Fath) has turned out to be the BIGGEST JOKE of daytime! She is still running off viewers, yet they just keep her on the show for no reason. (I sure would love to know what the hell it is she has over TPTB on OLTL, because anyone else as bad as she is would have been dumped over two years ago!!!) Worst actress in daytime! And worst character too!

OLTL needs to bring back Kish (Scott Evans and Brett Claywell). The show hasn’t been the same without them, and as a former life-long viewer, their departure and the way they were treated is the very reason I refuse to watch the show any longer. If Kish doesn’t come back, neither do I. TPTB need to wake up and realize why OLTL is “tanking” right now. Viewers don’t want a bunch of Ken dolls with no talent on the show, they want quality actors and well written storylines. And that’s Scott Evans and Brett Claywell and the Kish storyline (and Ron Carlivati’s writing without the interference of FV and Mr. Frons)!!!

I totally agree!! Mr. Valentini made the biggest mistake of any EP in the history of daytime when he let Kish (Scott Evans and Brett Claywell) get away! And for a gay man himself, he really did let the gay community down with his decision, not to mention a lot of the regular viewers who loved the Kish storyline (including me). I am a straight, married, middle-aged female from the Midwest, and I was totally sickened by the fact that Mr. Valentini did not have the cahonies to continue this storyline. What a wimpy ass! I was also a life-long viewer of the show until Kish left. (I quit watching when they left). I am convinced that, had he kept Kish around, OLTL would be in much better shape right now and be much higher ranked in the ratings. Kish brought in a totally new fanbase, and even brought in a whole new “international” audience (which would be great for the sponsors of the show). After all, those international viewers buy American products the same as Americans do. All Mr. Valentini did was lose a lot of potential buyers of those American products and piss off a lot of long-time OLTL fans by letting Kish go. Now he is paying the price! If ever there were a description of an “IDIOT”, he certainly fits the bill. There was every reason in the world to keep the Kish storyline going, and absolutely no reason at all to dump it!

I believe that Florencia Lozano was absolutely snubbed. I can’t speak for every soap as I only watch the 3 ABC soaps and Days (off and on) BUT out of ALL the actors/actresses who had beefy material that could be considered Emmy worthy? She beat them all with a blindfold and her hands tied behind her back. From her acceptance of her upcoming ‘death’ to her friendship with Blair to her having to leave Todd/Dani, FL showed SUCH a range of emotions.

I usually do not put other actors/actresses under the bus to make a case for another BUT what did Gina Tognoni do that was note-worthy to be pre-pre nom’ed in the first place (forget a pre-nom right now)? She came back to fanfare for the character BUT it was a dud. They have used the character to chem-test her from Todd to Joey to John right now and not ONE thing has stuck, for me certainly and it seems like with other fans as well, for this character to interest me. Maybe I am missing something with GT but it seems like she is bored with the character and comes across as stiff in all her scenes.

The second WTF were they thinking snub is Kimberly McCullough. While I respect NLG as a actress, that spot EASILY belonged to KMc. I do not particularly care for the Robin character BUT this woman has done an amazing job as a actress to portray EVERY emotion that the character has to go through and has done so with such EASE. I think it’s a joke that she wasn’t nominated for a Emmy for GH is a joke. She’s one of the STRONGEST Supporting Actresses you can find out there and has been knocking it out the park for YEARS!

If I may quote what Kim so beautifully stated above, “She doesn’t play a scene, she owns the scene.”

toy1975, of course it’s ROBO voting! You think the mags CARE about what truly happens? They know they will have mindless idiots BUYING the magazine to see who wins. THAT’S what matters: the amount of MONEY that they can pull in and for some ODD reason people treat those polls as if they are the GOSSIP truth. It’s just a matter of which fanbase likes to waste their time because they feel some kind of way about their actor/actress/couple and need to get validation through a poll.

Just to show you I know you can robo-vote: I have at LEAST 10 addresses I’ve collected over the years and have used them for the mags to see if they are truly a unique voting situation or just anyone can vote. Clearly the latter won out in the end. Those mags poll are NOTHING more than that: polls that anyone with a web browser, Internet connection, email and proxy website can vote on.

And you CLEARLY missed what I was saying in that (which doesn’t surprise me). Polls mean NOTHING when they are judging for the EMMYS. Rebeccca or whoever else can win ALL the polls they WANT, it’s not going to count towards the Emmy’s. Emmy’s are based off YEARLY work we see on our screens (whether we agree with who is pre-pre nom’ed, pre-nom’ed or actually nominated is another story) aka TALENT; not who fans need validation through a poll.

PART of what makes her so popular, AND CAUSES fans to be devoted enough to vote over and over for her is her ACTING. she has shown SHE HAS WHAT it takes because at a very YOUNG AGE she won an EMMY from YUP the DAYTIME EMMY’S not the people’s choice.
