As many know yesterday We Love Soaps revealed its number one actress in its Top 50 countdown of the Greatest Soap Actresses of All Time, in which The Bold and the Beautiful’s, Susan Flannery ( Stephanie) took the top spot. So On-Air On-Soaps asked the website’s editor-in-chief, (and brainchild of the list), Roger Newcomb to give us his thoughts exclusively on why he decided to put together the countdown and engage a panel of experts for his concept, as well as his personal thoughts on the final five! Newcomb and his site truly have cornered the market on being the official soap historical society! Who doesn’t love that?
Newcomb on why came up with the 50 Greatest Actress list: ”We decided to do the 50 Greatest Actresses countdown because many of us were drawn into daytime as children by some of these performers. Several of them have never won Emmys and we thought this would be a great way to bring attention to all the talented women daytime has been blessed with over the years. No single panelist picked their Top 5 in the exact order they finished but two of 14 people had the same five actresses.”
Newcomb on his feelings on the final five actresses who earned the top spots: “As for the Top 5, I love them all. Susan Flannery has been wowing daytime audiences since 1996. Kim Zimmer gave my favorite performance of all time – the “Slut of Springfield” scene. Erika Slezak has made the same role interesting for 39 years which is not easy. I started my personal list with the great Beverlee McKinsey. And Robin Strasser is the most dedicated actress I’ve ever seen. It’s a shame that many of their classic performances, espcially Strasser and McKinsey on Another World and Flannery on Days of Our Lives, seem to be lost forever.”
