254 April 10th, 2013 Will DALLAS Return For A Third Season? Patrick Duffy Believes So!

Courtesy/TNT

With so-so ratings for its second season and amidst the passing of Dallas’ central star Larry Hagman (J.R.),  many long time fans have found it extremely appealing and riveting!

In a piece out from the New York Daily News, series star Patrick Duffy addresses the ratings lag, but that the show is really stronger than ever relating,  “A network like TNT and Warner Brothers look at the trend. … They are ecstatic with what ‘Dallas’ is doing and as long as we continue that in the demographics of 18-40, we are their golden child.”

In addition Duffy believes the show will even get better in its third season ratings,  “The summer is the perfect time on cable television because none of the other networks are premiering anything.”  As Dallas fans know, the second season launched this winter, while the first season reboot launched in the summer.

Sources also told the NY Daily News that executives at TNT were “nervous that show icon Larry (J.R.) Hagman’s death in November combined with subpar ratings could spell trouble.”

OK, Dallas fans, do you think the series will have a third season?  If so, what do you think would help increase ratings to ensure its staying power?  Share your thoughts below!

YES! I love the pacing of the storylines and with Pam coming back (whoever plays her, it doesn’t matter…. they can recreate flashbacks with Margaret Michaels if they have to) it will great. She was very believable in those 1988 clips… she can do the job if she gets it. That character is pivotol with Cliff and Pamala # 2 .. and with another generation of a barnes/ewing couple.. we need that first generation couple back! it’s perfect!
I love the pacing of these storylines.. much better….moves faster…Cynthia is doing an awesome job!

This show is in fire right now. Must have a third season!

Dallas is the best show on tv. TnT has not done a great job of advertising the show, If CBS had jumped on this for round two of Dallas It would have been just as strong as in the eighties. TNT is missing the boat with a potential gold mine. Come on TNT figure out how to get the word out that this show is the real deal and bring it back for many more seasons. I have watched this since the beginning and was so happy for the return. I look forward to this show every week and will be very dissapointed if I have to give it up.

    Terra replied

Ditto! This Dallas is fast paced and the actors of this new generation are excellent. Wondered if there could be a Dallas without Larry Hageman but I believe the cast they have will keep Dallas the show it was and is now. Please TNT keep it going!

Season 2 of the new Dallas was much better and improved over the first season. I liked that Audrey Landers and Deborah Shelton returned. Hey, even Lee Majors did a couple episodes. I stopped everything to watch him. The story so far is finding “Pam Ewing” and if Victoria Principal would have returned that would have brought the ratings up, but she has turned down the offer. I suggested on the internet Teri Hatcher could play “Pam”. The mystery woman could be “Pam”. Some think it may be Morgan Brittany as “Katherine Wentworth”.
I would like Lee Majors to return in Season 3 to help the Ewings.
I would like to see Priscilla Presley return as “Jenna Wade” to offer some comfort to Bobby.
I would like Audrey Landers to return. She sure was a scene stealer in Season 2 and her character was a hot pistol.

But I completely lost interest after the third or fourth episode in this revamped version. Just didn’t have the same pop that the original had.

I think it would be good if Bobby and John Ross become closer, a little on the gray side of things and Christopher and Pam get in conflict with them (still think Victoria Principal will return?? maybe, and if she won’t I’d cast Jaclyn Smith in a minute.)

Are you kidding? This is like heaven, watching Dallas again! I watched it the first time around and loved it and have watched it gleefully upon its return. Why they put it up against the ACC Basketball I will never know – if ratings are the issue – but we taped the games and watched Dallas. That should give the advertisers a clue. Even though we are in the 50 to 60 age market, our opinion should surely count.

I also want to say the “tribute” to JR that touched me deeply was the music when that show began. It was, of course, the DALLAS music, but a little slower and almost haunting. It was a fine way to embrace the bittersweet passing of an old friend who you loved to hate and hated to love but did both.

Finely, the new folks under the guidance of Bobby (Patrick Duffy) will do just fine… the cast has already blended well and as relationships evolve, DALLAS (returned) will be as big as ever.

Yes, JR (Larry Hagman) will be missed he was a huge part of our lives growing up on I dream of Jeannie and then as JR on Dallas, we cried as we found out of his passing. JR was a villain / gentleman but he never did the kind of bizarre and awful things that Cliff and Rowland do. We can’t wait for Monday night’s to come around for Dallas it is the high light of our week! We grew up watching Dallas and now we get to see the torch passed to the next generation, we can’t get enough of it an hour is not enough to satisfy the crave, the last two episodes are two hours we would love to see it continue to be a two hour series from start to finish as the seasons continue!!! Love Dallas! Will miss JR but the writers did an excellent job from Day One in introducing the younger characters & making them a primary part of the show. Ryland is a better villain than Cliff Barnes ever was. And I hope Judith Light returns as Ryland’s mother. Awesome job! Also like how Christopher is being more manipulative and John Ross has a conscience (at times). Always knew Bobby had steel inside him & now we get to see it.

Loved the old Dallas and really love the new show! I was worried about where the story line would go with Larry Hagman’s death. But the show is fantastic and I am also baffled about the low ratings they say the show is having! I hope they make Pam a regular on the show and I am sure they can find a actress to fill the spot. Looking forward to many more seasons of Dallas!

I absolutely love Dallas. Have been a fan since the original series was on TV. I love the twists in the storyline. JR’s death shouldn’t change the viewers thoughts since there are so many dirty handed characters. Move it to another time slot and night so it isn’t opposite DWTS. That may help.

I was just saying tonight that I think Larry Hagman would absolutely approve of the job the actors are doing, the show is rockin, so with all the garbage shows on TV now, PLEASE keep this coming, the story lines are great can’t wait for Monday Night’s finale. Also if it was to move to a different night, I remember Dallas (CBS) was on Friday nights, I had to learn how to program my VCR in the early 80′s.

The second season of Dallas is even better than the first was. I miss J.R. but the way the writers have included his memory in the show has really knocked my socks off. I hope there will be a third season. I can’t understand why the ratings are sub par. I wonder who’s keeping track of that because for me this show is my favorite one on t.v. now.

The ratings are bound to improve if Dallas was shown regularly at a sensible time. It is now on a tuesday night at 11-00 Pm. The old show was peak time at 8-00PM on BBC1.Channel 5 have done well to secure the show but should realise it is an honour for them and put it in peak viewing with advertising and stories in newspapers to remind people and make them want to watch it. As for showing it in the summer, great summer 2013 but to wait till summer 2014 would be madness

Yes, it will be back for a 3rd season; but, it may not survive a 4th. The network has to stop changing the time of the show being televised because 1 week it starts at 8pm then the next it’s 9pm then back to 8pm; as well as, stop changing the day that it will be broadcast. Last year it went from Wednesday to Saturday then back to Wednesday and this year it’s change to Monday. Make up your mind. Shuffling a show around makes a person lose track of their favorite show & lose interest.

I loved the original Dallas; I am a long-time fan. I missed many episodes of the first couple of seasons, but was hooked just before JR got shot. Great writing, acting, stories, and sets from most of the original series. Intensely disliked Charlene Tilton and her Lucy Ewing character though, and I still do.

I watched the series through the original run mid-Season 2, and again in 1995-1997 when it aired on CMT. I bought the seasons as they were available and watched it again. I agree with those who believe the show “jumped the shark” with the dream season, but I also think there would not have been another way to write the recently departed Bobby successfully into the series.

It took a few episodes for me to become comfortable with the new generation of Dallas in the continuation series. Initially it was great to see Hagman, Duffy, and Gray to reprise their roles and Brenda Strong was absolutely dead on as Ann. Brewster was dead on in her role as Elena from the first episode, but it took a while for Metcalfe, Henderson, and Gonzalas to grow into their roles. I wasn’t crazy about “sweet Rebecca” from the first season; she’s wonderful as the “devious Pamela” form the second season.

Within a few episodes, I saw actors Metcalfe and Henderson make their roles their own. I was originally favouring Chris Demetral as Christoper Ewing (JR Returns, c1996) instead of Metcalfe and wasn’t sure if Henderson had the acting chops for John Ross. I was wrong – both actors succeed in their respective roles. I just wish they would lose the all facial scruff or grow attractive facial hair. Mabye it’s a modern style, but both men look unkepmt much of the time.

This show has definitely become a new favourite. It’s darker and more gritty than the original series, but with less characters it would have to be less like a true soap-opera format series. I like the return of orginal characters, but teel some of them are just window dressing: Gary, Valene, Lucy, and Ray and really don’t add much to the show. Cliff and Afton should be given more to do – it would be wonderful to see them in Dallas providing support for Pamela and clashing again when they disagree. Cliff Barnes just never gives up the Ewing feud!

The role of Pamela Barnes Ewing should be recast for the short-term if Victoria Principal is not interested in returning. However, I strongly believe that Pam should not become between Bobby and Ann. The love and commitment of this new couple is very strong; I believe the love boat for Pam and Bobby has long ago sailed.

I’ll be disappointed if Dallas is not renewed for a third season. Sometimes the networks forgot these types of series need time to build and audience and many of them are cancelled too soon before they had a chance to succeed. The recent GCB series with Leslie Bibb and Annie Potts is an example of one that should have continued.

I totally agree. Dallas on TNT is better than ever. It is growing in popularity, my friends and I can’t wait to replay the show every Tuesday morning and try to predict the next series of plots. I will definitely miss JR but I am positive he would say “The show must go on”. Bringing back players from the original series really sparks the intensity of the show. I positively can’t wait for season three. I too was a avid follower of the GCB show which had the same level of intrique that the new Dallas series has created. When GCB did not return I was extremly sad and disapointed in the network and the producers lack of fan appreciation. GCB was filling the void created with the loss of Desparate Housewives and Sunday TV as not recovered yet. Please do not make this mistake again and bring on Dallas for Season Three. Thank you.

Dallas is the best show on television. I watched it back in the old days and loved it but thought it had “jumped the shark” after the “dream” season that “didn’t exist.” However the new series sizzles. The young cast is fantastic. Patrick Duffy has brought a new dimension to Bobby’s role. The action is extremely fast paced where if you slip out of the room for fifteen seconds, you could miss a key piece of the puzzle. The writing is better than the old show. TNT shouldn’t turn its back on this. Cheap reality television has made it hard for strong scripted shows to survive. I don’t watch reality TV, and it is only well written and well performed shows like Dallas that keep me watching TV at all. Don’t blow it, TNT.

I think having JR, Sue Ellen, Cliff Barnes and Bobby back on the new series has been good for it and kept it interesting. Even though JR has passed, I believe the other characters they have cast on the show are really good actors and keep it interesting. John Ross will carry the torch for JR and Bobby will for the Ewing family. There are not any night time soaps on now and I never liked the show Desperate Housewives, so it’s been a long time since there wre any good night time soaps on. Even though I am in the over 40 demographics I hope they keep Dallas on for a few more years. I love the show.

I think the biggest issue is getting the word out. I have told several people about Dallas being back on and they had known nothing about it. An amazing cast!!!! Could not have cast it any better! I had the pleasure of working with Patrick Duffy a few years ago and he is an amazing individual with a genuine heart and soul! The key people are in place, I think it will just take time for people to ‘find’ the show. Helping us, the fans to post it on social media is great! It is the ONLY show I watch, it consists of REAL actors, I hate the reality shows. Acting is becoming a lost art, and this show if full of artistic ability. Keep it going! Bless you all.

I was an avid fan of the original Dallas. So much so, that about 2 years ago, my wife and I watched the entire series on DVD. I would always say to her “I wonder what Dallas would be like in today’s time, with cell phones, the internet, etc.”. Then, when I saw that TNT was bringing Dallas back, I was very excited! From the first episode, when I found that they kept the original theme music, and showed the NEW Cowboy’s stadium in the opening credits, I was hooked. When Larry Hagman passed away, I was saddened, as I’m sure many people were. But what TNT did in honor of Larry was amazing. The opening credits, and music, of the episode “J,R,’s Masterpiece”, was touching, and actually brought tears to my eyes.
As the second season continues, I have realized that TNT’s cast picks for the new series is spot on. Josh Henderson, as John Ross, is supurb! He definately has J.R.’s DNA.
As with the original Dallas series (which was the pioneer of the “season ending cliffhanger”) I find myself anxiously awaiting the next episode. As long as the series continues to excite, and keep us in suspense, I believe (and hope) it will do well.
I suppose TNT is shooting for the 20 – 40 year old demographic, but I’m sure that myself (I’m 54 years old) and anyone else who was a fan of the original series, glued to their TV on Monday nights! What is also amazing, is that TNT was able to bring back so many of the original cast members.
Keep up the good work TNT, I hope this new generation of Dallas is as successful as the original!

Yes, it is sad that J.R. has died, but as long as their is a character who is just as devious as J.R. was, then the show will continue to be engaging! Perhaps if Bobby’s son takes J..R’.s place as the “evil” one, that would be a surprising twist to keep the fan base interested!!!!

Its wonderful to see Bobby and Sue Ellen, JR is sadly missed, but will never be forgotten, and it has been lovley to see old characters Gary, Lucy and Ray make appearances. My favourite character now is the new Pamela, she’s gorgeous and strong. I hope new Dallas runs and runs, I don’t know how we have managed without the Ewings all those years the show was off-air.

I feel the 2nd season has been stronger than the first. Very well done to all of the actors and writers, keep it up. Have enjoyed seeing the family coming together and closing ranks. Growing up I watched the original Dallas and it was engaging every week; I remember every one was on pins and needles for the next episode. The new version of this show is falling right into the footsteps of the original and I am positively obsessed with it. I was telling my co-workers in my office at DISH that I’m not really one for soap operas but this one has pulled me in like no other. There is just something about being familiar with the evil doings of some characters on the show and seeing their adult children buck what seems to be a family curse. This truly is one of the best shows on TV and I sincerely hope that TNT will renew the show. I’m not always home when Dallas airs on Monday nights so I catch up on what I’ve missed by using DISH Anywhere. It allows me to turn my tablet into a TV anytime and anywhere.

It has to be one of the all time great TV shows..I watched the original and was so caught up in it..The same for the new Dallas..I am very sad that JR is gone….No one could replace him..However I live close to where he was raised and buried and we have a little part of JR still with us…I hope the show continues on for a long time..It is great…

My husband and I have been Dallas fans since its inception many years ago. When Dallas came back last year we were thrilled, like having old friends with us again. When Dallas is on it is the one evening we spend at home alone….WITH NO COMPANY to distract us. We wouldn’t miss an episode. J. R. will be missed but the young generation’s story line will give interesting twists and turns like days of old. The older characters (whom we love dearly), will be a wonderful foundation for the younger characters, cementing the series for a long time to come. John Ross and Christopher remind us so much of J.R. and Bobby from years ago. Do keep the series going. It would be such a shame to lose Dallas again.

Yes. I love it. I doubt I missed an episode of the original Dallas and was skeptical at this “catch-up” series. It had me on the first episode! Though Larry Hagman will be missed, he was gifted enough to leave us with a character that can live on. John Ross is truly a J.R. wannabe, and he is fantastic at it. To see the old characters and the new is a rare and wonderful treat. I hope this series goes as long as the original!

Dallas is wonderful-acting, writing, production is superb.
The acting of Patirck Duffy is top notched and Henderson has really excelled also.
Perhaps bringing back a couple more of the original cast would add a little more for some of the people who recall the original show, right now the new cast outnumbers the original members by a wide margin.
Other than that I think just keeping the writing as good as it has been is a key to holding the audience.

YES!!!! Dallas has been my favorite show for as long as I can remember (I grew up watching the original with my parents) and having the show back on and my old friends has been awesome. I really miss Larry Hagman, but I think John Ross has the potential to become just as big a character in his own right. I hope the show gets a third season, and a fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth like the old show. I only wish these seasons were longer. 10 and 15 episodes per season just aren’t enough!

Please Please bring Dallas back for a 3,4 etc. season. I love it as it is. I was a big fan of the orginial Dallas & was thrilled when I learned last yr it was coming back.I have just ordered the first & second season on DVD. Dallas is 1 of the only 2 tv series I watch, Scandals being the other. I am a avid reader so when a show is good enough for me to put my book down and look forward to Monday night it is GOOD. Although JR is gone your cast of characters are more than strong enough to carry the show. I love to see the Ewing pulling together perhaps putting them in conflict with another super family would be good.I don’t know I am just throwing out ideals because I so want this show to continue. I know it will all depend on rating,as a fan I will continue to do my part in spreading the word.LOVE LOVE LOVE DALLAS.

I cant find the second part of when pam falls and losses the baby I liked the part when bobby punched jr for making fun of pam and and calling her trash when she was not. my favorite couple was bobby and pam because they had a love no can break. for example they will break up and get back together. my another favorite couple was bobby and ann because they also made a cute couple like bobby and pam. how come cliif was nice In the first series but in the second season when they brought dallas cliff was mean to bobby and christionfer and making him believe that pam was dead or alive but I think pam is not dead because she was trying to make it back to bobby and christionfer so please bring a third season and please bring pam back

Although I enjoyed watching the new series the plot lines were too much intertwined
and I will be ‘pleased’ but surprised if they commission a 3rd series with the viewing
figures they have been getting. From 20 years again and multi million viewing figures
on BBC 1 to now televised on Channel 5 and lately a late night slot and JR shot again
    - hardly an original story line.
