44 October 10th, 2013 Will FALCON CREST Be The Next Classic Soap Opera To Be Revived?

With the success of TNT’s Dallas reboot now comes word out of TV Guide that the uber-popular drama in the vineyards of Northern California, Falcon Crest may live to see another day!  According to TVG and chats with former series star William Moses, and the beloved Susan Sullivan, several of the cast has been contacted to see if there is interestto revive the series that aired on CBS primetime from 1981-1990!

William Moses related, “There’s not much I can say, for reasons that go beyond myself.  Warner Bros. owns the rights and so it’s a discussion between them and the writers. There is a pitch and an idea germinating that has some traction. The producers contacted me to ask if I’d be interested, and I said yes. Where it goes on the producing side, I don’t know.” Susan Sullivan, who played Moses’ TV mother, Maggie,  was killed off the series, her involvement would only be as  ghost of sorts in the mind of surviving characters.

In story, the revival is said to focus on Moses’ Cole Gioberti and David Selby’s Richard Channing, son of the matriarch Angela (the late Jane Wyman). “David and I speak periodically and are old friends and it would be fascinating for me to work with him again,” says Moses, whose character exited the series after six seasons. “Life was too small for Cole in the vineyards, so he went to Australia to form a new life. Because the character was left open-ended, I would be curious to see what that boy became as a man. I can see him coming back to the valley with a chip on his shoulder.”

So soap fans, would would you like to see Falcon Crest back on the map again? Do you like the initial story premise?  Comment below!

Yes, bring it back…also Peyton Place, Dark Shadows, and The Edge Of Night…casting for DS my choice…Kelly Sullivan as Angeligue…GHs Diane as Julia Hoffman and GHs Spinneli as Willie Loomis!!!

I’ve thought for awhile that The Edge of Night could make a good primetime soap. Also think that a Ryan’s Hope reboot could make a good prime time soap as well!

I would watch both of them!!!

    I would, too.

FALCON CREST was a favorite back in the day but without Angela Channing, Maggie Gioberti, and Melissa Agretti the reboot wouldn’t be of much interest to me.

I’d much rather see a KNOTS LANDING reboot.

I can’t see GH’s DIane as Julia Hoffman… unless you want it more of a comedy! te he he Julia was so deadpan serious… Diane is great at being funny.

I’d love to see Dark Shadows again, but leary – after 2 disappointing revivals (that horrid sexed up version on NBC with Bed Cross and the equally dreadful Johnny Depp movie)… Wish they’d stop ruining my memories.

if they could make it like it was, spooky and serious and not mess it up or ‘modernize’ it, I’d watch it.

I watched Falcon Crest just to watch David Selby (also of Dark Shadows)!

oh, I see someone else said Knotts Landing… love that show. If they’d bring that back and keep the same stars as their characters on there, sure they’d be older, but so would their kids.

    jimh(leave it to beaver) replied

There was also a DS 2004 pilot by the old WB network that didnt make it too…1991 version i didnt like the Maggie/Roger pairing…Johnny Depps version was ok but disappointing…too much comedy mixed with violence…actress who played Viki/Maggie was a miscast…Johnny didnt need that left over white makeup from his Alice in Wonderland movie…blink and you barely noticed Lara Parker, David Selby. Kathy lee Scott and the late Johnathan Frid in the party scene…shouldve made it spooky…im sure the actress who plays Dianne could play deadpan serious…she does resemble Grayson Hall…actually id like to see Dark Shadows: the next generation with an adult David Collins and his family.

This show won’t be about any of the characters we loved in the 1980′s — just generations down the line. It will be God awful just like the TNN version of “Dallas.”

Falcon Crest was one I never watched. But, I would definitely be open to watching a revival! I love the revival of Dallas! Will always miss Larry Hagman, though. I used to watch Knots Landing and Dallas. TNT used to play reruns of Knots Landing and Dallas during the day, years ago. Was fun to watch again!

I liked FALCON CREST at the start and it ran hot and cold with me. Sometimes it was too over the top for me. And it had, if I recall right, some sort of Initiative storyline (borrowed by REVENGE?) involving Richard Channing and Nazil art thieves or some such. I always admired Jane Wyman though and marveled watching her and those “old Hollywood” guest stars.

It is always good to see old friends but I wonder if you really can reboot. DALLAS shows yuo can but even then, the tone is not the same. The lesson is to remember that and accept that those fictional worlds have had to change with our real ones.

Much as I love DS, I think that ship has finally sailed. How many more versions do we really need to see? “Edge of Night” is another story … how about a return to Monticello?

DS could work if it took place 40 years later with the family of a grown up David Collins and a stranger coming to town claiming to be Bramwell Collins, son of Barnabas, but is really Barnabas posing as his own son. David, who is ill and bedridden, dies before he can reveal the secret about Bramwell whom he knows is really Barnabas….also would love to see EON come back rebooted with new actors playing Mike, Nancy, Bill, Adam, Nicole, Raven, Sky, Geraldine ect.

Seriously? I mean I loved Falcon Crest but come on….KNOTS LANDING PEOPLE!!!!
It outlived ALL of these shows, and for good reason…richly written characters and semi-realistic storylines that has so much history that ANYONE would love to see what the past and next generation are up to. You could do so much with Bobby and Betsy Ewing and Meg McKenzie (Sumner) and who knows if Paige popped out one of Greg’s kids…good little Meg vs. Evil Paige offspring…OH the possibilites!!!

Who says Susan Sullivan’s character still has to be dead. Soap opera can create so much creative writing. A secret potion that made her look dead, a person that looked like her died, a conspiracy and she was taken to Australia for her safety? Anything can happen in soap opera.

I LOVED “Falcon Crest” and would be interested in seeing a reboot IF they got some of the original actors/actresses to come back; not just one or two. I think they should mine the characters from it’s highest rated seasons for the new show.

Who the heck would play the villain? Jane Wyman is gone and David Selby, though his character could be ruthless, wouldn’t have the same impact as a female villain. Susan Sullivan is on “Castle” and though she is only supporting there, I’d hate to see her leave. I was just gathering cast information for a soaps class I’m going to be teaching and FC had major stars on its roster; I dare say more than any of the other night time soaps.

P.S. – I’d also love to see reboot of “Knots Landing”, as so many others have mentioned. Joan, Michelle, Ted, Donna, and Bill have all been on various shows talking about KL in recent years, so why not?

I hope WB home video is looking at this thread. I bought the 2 seasons of KL that are out now, and they leave you at the end of season 2 with Don Murray going over a cliff. I remember they did kill him off that way, but I didn’t think it was that soon in the series. I wish they would bring the rest of them out on DVD.

Sorry but this whole piece is absolute B*$%&@*T!!!

Cole had few, if any, interractions with Richard. Cole left shortly after the second or third season and that is when Richard started getting more and more attention and scenes.

TNT would not make the focus of a show on a 50-year-old man and a 70-year-old man. They would shove a whole bunch of 22 year old newbies down our throats just as they have done on “Dallas 2.0″

    Reply

  22. Matt says:

Nobody is shoving anything down your throat. Change the channel if you don’t like what you see. The piece merely says that people have been talking. There’s been no development or production schedule. It may never happen or it may happen next fall.

HELL TO THE YEAH Falcon Crest should be revived!!!!! Lance and (ESPECIALLY!!!!!) Maggie were (and still are) my all-time FAVORITE FC characters…HOLLA!!!!! It shouldn’t be too hard to get Lorenzo Lamas on-board with this (if he’s available). And, I don’t think that Susan Sullivan is being given enough on-air-time on Castle. So, SS should DEFINITELY jump ship for a FC revival. That would show ABC…LOL!!!!! Bottom Line here: I think that a Falcon Crest revival is a TRULY AWESOME IDEA!!!!! Here’s hoping………..

Falcon Crest was my favorite nighttime soap, and it would be great for a reboot! Chase’s body was never found so Robert Foxworth could return . Maybe maggie’s twin died in the pool and Maggie lived near her son Cole in Australia! Focus on Cole’s children, who are attending college in the San Francisco area, add some new youngeractors, and maybe have Angela’s cousin ( some movie star like Ellen Brystyn ) function as the Matriarch and feud with David Selby’s Richard.

I adored “FC” back in the day, and the major reason was the incredible class-act(ress) named MIss Jane Wyman…..her “Angela Channing” was leading lady perfection, not to mention that her relationship to “Old Hollywood” brought so many of her contemporaries to the cast for a truly star-studded soap experience! Given that consideration,, I truly cannot imagine a reboot of the show without her….if you remember, she was briefly absent during the waning days of the series due to illness, and without her, it was like an entirely different show. Even with some of the old stalwarts like the superb David Selby, Lorenzo Lamas, Susan Sullivan, William Moses and Robert Foxworth (for whom I never much cared….) I cannot imagine being able to recapture the “Reagan Era” magic that FC was….it was just so emblematic of the times. That being said, I would still watch a 2.0 version out of sheer curiosity, but I would think that Wyman’s absence would loom large over the production, no matter how skillfully or artistically executed…..and many of the original characters would be gone, too, since their portrayers have also passed on. (Think Angela’s magnificent manservant “Chou Li! All of her husbands and exes, not to mention most of the key adults from the first few seasons….it’s actually sort of sad to recall of all of them…………. : ( ) Needless to say, the liberal use of flashback footage would definitely need to be incorporated to make a new series feasible and to honor the legacy of the original premise…

Yes please bring it back. They have done a brilliant job with dallas. I love the winery theme and there is so much they can do to bring it into 2014 . I hope this will be done right so the new generation follows the cast in the original like dallas has. We watch dallas every week and love how they intertwined the story and people from the past to today. We will watch falcon crest every week too.

I Can see Warner Brothers bring back one of the best primetime shows for a reboot, I like the concept but I think Chase and Maggie should come back. For Chase I don’t remember if they found his body plus Maggie could have staged her death to look like a drowning. Also we have to have Emma and her daughter Angela back in the Tuscany Valley because her and her daughter were mentioned in the rewrite of the will in the last episode and Julia needs to come back to, she could have left the nunnery, is remarried to a rich man and is vary happy. That’s my thoughts on it any way, If your going to do it do it right I say.

Edge of Night would be a super hit as long as they kept to the style of the Slesar years in the writing. Never seen such superb mystery writing anywhere. It is the only soap to ever win an Edgar award for mystery writing and would be awesome as a late night serial.
