I hear you about the oldies Elaine. I have been a fan of the show since the mid eighties, which in my opinion were the glory days of the show. Give me a good Traci and Lauren cat fight any day over what we had to watch over the past year. But I think things are slowly taking a turn for the better. As the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. Here’s to 28 more wonderful years Y&R! !

It’s beyond baffling that this boring mess of a show is #1, way beyond baffling , Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Hi, soapqueenforever,
I just turned 30, and I consider myself an ‘oldie’ watcher, as I started watching Y&R as a tot with my Gran.
But, it wasn’t until I was about 14 that I became an avid watcher because I finally made sense of the storylines. LOL.
And, as Elaine said, I am also one of the faithfuls, no matter how big my ennui with some of the characters/stories is.
    Happy Holidays to all.

It always felt as something stinky is going on with the YR numbers.
28 Consecutive Years as #1 .. and during those 28 years there were many other Great soaps and not once, not once, in 28yrs did one of the other great soaps ever come as #1 not even one time.
    - the odds are sky high on that ever happening.

It is a simple formula, a ton of talent with most of the cast, better to great writing in MOST years and honestly, the thing that makes them who they are is their network, CBS, they believe in their soap and support it!

no happiness for anyone, they never
used to drag out S/l for a year some time,
Thank you very much for writing your
stories they are always a treat to read,
    which I enjoy reading.

It’s not my intent to throw cold water here. But quite frankly, this continuing streak of consecutive years for Y&R being the top-rated daytime drama does not equate with sustained high quality for the program, IMO. It simply means that its fans/viewers are much more inclined to sit through and stomach long stretches of painful storytelling than those of the other soaps. Putting/keeping CBS on at 12:30 pm ET/11 am PT is a force of habit that can’t be broken for many no matter what. Y&R resides in a very viewer-friendly time slot on the network that promotes its daytime lineup the most. It’s not out on an island like Days on NBC, GH on ABC.

Plus, it stands to reason that it’s much easier to stay #1 in this genre nowadays when there are only 4 daytime dramas left! Honestly, what the now defunct ATWT did decades ago was far more impressive to me because there were 15-20 soaps on the air way back in those days. Y&R’s numbers are a shell of what they were even 5 years ago in the key demos.

Several years from now, if indeed there are only 3 (or even 2) daytime soaps left, is this show really still going to be lauded every December for “30-31-32, etc. years as daytime’s top-rated drama”? LOL

    I cringe everytime I read = Y&R the #1 soap-
by constantly saying saying #1 every time Y&R is mentioned in articles etc it diminishes the other soaps, like a slap in their face, nasty to do to other soaps.
It’s like nasty gloating . (28 years of it)

It’s quite an accomplishment but in all fairness the other three soaps are such a mess that even with Pratt as head writer Y&R was the least awful of the four this past year.

the success of this soap is due to these factors : cast stability with preservation of the key characters , very little recasting , a very structured show with a vision for the most part preserved hence no need to reboot because the show has stayed true to its stories and characters , the emphasis on family , the family and also character relationships being very real and honest and not cartoonish .
My concern now is that i feel that there is too much gc buzz , too many conversations , talking heads , and too much chancellor park , i don’t want the soap to turn into a talkative soap with no action , no adventure , no mystery , no romance , no excitement , i am not asking for cliff falls , car crashes , fires , explosions , earthquakes , tornadoes , cave ins and any type of accident to occur every week but i do expect to see these types of stories still being told every now and then .
