65 March 13th, 2014 Y&R’s Camryn Grimes Speaks On The Mystery Surrouding “Faux Cassie”!

On The Young and the Restless, fans were in for shock recently, when it was revealed that Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) was paying off a Cassie lookalike (Camryn Grimes) to gaslight Sharon (Sharon Case) to find out the secret she is harboring.  This is all being maneuvered by good ole’ Vic under the guise of keeping Sharon, a woman he admits he despises, away from his son, Nick (Joshua Morrow)!  And wait till Victor learns that secret!

This shocker came about because bipolar Sharon all along has believed she has been talking to her dead daughter, AKA “Cassie’s ghost”, when in actuality the ghost turns out to be real, only Sharon doesn’t know it!  So just who is this Cassie doppelganger?  Y&R fans on social media believe that one theory is that perhaps Sharon had twins (one she never knew about!), which would explain the uncanny resemblance of the two characters.  Or, is that even what is really going on here?

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Camryn Grimes (“Faux Cassie”) recently to talk about this story surprise … which came as quite the surprise to even her!  Here is what this all-time Genoa City favorite had to say about her top secret return to the number one daytime drama!

What happened when you found out you were not playing “Ghost Cassie” but a “Faux Cassie” which was a new character?  Did you know from the start that is the road you would be traveling, when you made your return to Y&R this time?

CAMRYN: I did not know that all along.  It originally started as four to six episodes and it elongated from there.  I did not know what the plans were.  I just thought that Sharon was going through an episode of seeing Cassie, and that was it.  It only really started to develop back in October, but at that point I knew something might be happening, and they wanted to keep me around for bigger story.  I waited, and I waited, and I waited, (laughs) until probably not long before everybody knew.  That is when I found out what this was all going to be, and I am still learning new things about who the character is.  So, it’s very much a reveal for me as it is for the audience.

Do you know who your mystery character is yet?

CAMRYN: I do yeah, and I think I am one of the only ones at The Young and the Restless that I think does!

Courtesy/CBS

I don’t think any scene in Y&R history gets more play than Cassie’s deathbed scene.  Every Daytime Emmy telecast that I have been a segment producer on, or as a plot device, or as part of a most memorable or retrospective moments clip package, it is one of the most dramatic story points ever in soaps.  Do you ever think about how that still resonates, and how you are the gal the epicenter of it?

CAMRYN: I think about that all the time.  I am incredibly humbled to have been a part of something that has had such a lasting effect in the daytime genre.  Even having Twitter now and seeing the scope of the Y&R fan base and the people who have watched me previously, it’s amazing.  I have actually had people tell me that they have named their kids “Camryn” after me and I am like, “Don’t put that on me. I can’t handle that … that is too much!” (Laughs)  It’s crazy and I am humbled by it.

How is working with Eric Braeden (Victor) in this storyline, where he has hired “Faux Cassie” to get the goods on Sharon (Sharon Case) and find out her secret?

CAMRYN:  It’s really, really fun.  We only had scenes when I was on Y&R previously, when it would be like at a family pool party.  So it’s fun to work with him on this new dynamic, where I challenge him a little bit, and he challenges me back.

When did you pick acting back up after you left Y&R, and were killed off as Cassie?  The Y&R fans have always loved you.

CAMYRN:  When I left Y&R, I pretty much took several years off to finish school. Then when I was 18, I kind of started acting again.  I did a few guest spots on TV shows and I was in the movie Magic Mike!   It was great working on the film.

Recently crowned Oscar winner, Matthew McConaughey was in that film too!  What have you thought about his career metamorphosis?

CAMRYN: With Matthew McConaughey, he has really broken out of what he started doing.  He is really in his prime right now.  I haven’t seen him in True Detective, but my boyfriend keeps telling me I have to watch it …  so I have to catch up on it.

It seems that the “Faux Cassie” may actually be developing a heart.  On yesterday’s episode, she seemed to be showing signs in her conversation with Victor that she liked Sharon and felt bad for gaslighting her!

CAMRYN:  I think everybody has a heart.  I think you are going to see a more dimensional character than everybody would think.  And I hope they keep doing this big shocker stuff, because that was so cool!  Nobody knew except the day of that this “Cassie” figment was actually going to be a real person.  I think Y&R is going for more primetime-esque shockers now!

Speaking of shockers, do you think in a kind of twisted plot twist, “Faux Cassie” could develop feelings for Cassie’s adopted dad, Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow)?

CAMRYN:  Oh no, please no!  That would be so weird for me.  I have had a few fans say, “Maybe she will hook up with Nick!” And I say, “Let’s not go down that road, I have known Joshua since I have been six!” (Laughs)

So Y&R fans, what do you think is going on with “Faux Cassie”?  Is she Cassie’s bio-twin?  Who is she?  What do you think about what Victor and “Faux Cassie” are doing to Sharon? Are you glad to see Camryn Grimes back on Y&R? And was “Cassie’s Death” one of the most gut-wrenching moments in the history of the CBS soap?  Weigh-in!

I could see her being a twin or Cassie not being dead b/c those are very popular soap moves. I think this could be YR’s chance to bring on a lesbian character, especially if she is related to Sharon. The gay story they had a few years ago was so short lived. LGBT stories have worked well for AMC, GL, ATWT, and now Days & GH.

I like that idea. I think she is Cassie’s twin. Sharon didn’t know she gave birth to twins for whatever reason and they were split up at birth. (Sounds like Viki with Jessica and Natalie on OLTL.) Fake Cassie doesn’t know she was a twin either obviously, or that Sharon is her mother. I like your idea of her being gay. I think that’d be good. They need some gay people on Y&R, make the show a little more diverse like that.

I totally agree with you Holly about YR needing more gay people! I wished they had explored Adam’s past in NYC especially since he was willing to go to the extra mile of sleeping with his lawyer to prevent him from discovering his secret! I’ve always thought Adam was bi and wouldn’t it be simply FABULOUS if Adam hooked up with Philip Chancellor III?!

Kevin, I totally agree with you about Adam! I’ve always thought they should make him bi as well. I’ve always thought that’d be an interesting story to tell.

I think Cassie is staying dead because her death was so memorable. However she could be Cassie’s twin or maybe another daughter of Cassie’s father that no one knew about.Plus Victor said he saw her first at Crimson Lights.Which means she may have had her own reasons to be in town before Victor hired her.So she could be Tyler’s ex or connected to someone else in town.Plus we don’t know how long she has been in Genoa City.

This Cassie better come forward and rat on Victor! Im just over Victor. They all done wrong but having a grieving mother of his grandchildren go through this. i got no time for that ratchetness. Just saying.Nikki killed three people on this show already . look what Nick put Sharon through HIS WIFE right after they lost there daughter he knew the test might of been a lie for 18 yrs but he broke up his marriage and look what he did he played with Sharons emotions and made faith but left her in a mental hospital to have Faith then blamed her for being alone and falling for Adam. They all have there faults but Sharon never ran people over and killed people
Victoria and Nikki tried to get Sharon to abort Noah.
Phyllis also tried to murder people also, but we are supposed to let that slide, but Victor and his family torment Sharon until she goes off and she should be hanged, tired of the double standard!
The jury is also still out that Phyllis burned that lab tech in her home and Victor burned the place he had Skye stashed in Hawaii so he can first try to frame Adam for her murder but when Sharon came to help Adam Victor burned down the place and had Sharon go to jail

Please move on and Kevin burned down Gina’s with Colleen in the restaurant intending to kill her. Bottom line they all have their faults get over it. Rumor is Phyllis is coming back. Why??? I want this character to get away from all of them Ms. Sharon needs a life away from the toxic Newman’s

    Donna replied

I agree! I’m so sick of Victor and all his crap! And I also agree that Phyllis has done a lot of horrible things including hitting Paul and Christine with that rented car, but most viewers conveniently forgive and forget this fact, and give her a free pass. Honestly, I wish Phyllis would stay in her coma, because at least this way she’s not constantly causing chaos and trouble.
It’s high time Sharon catches a break, because she really deserves some long lasting happiness for a change.

    Sammie replied

The lab Tech Sasha, was burned in a motel, not her home, and it was shown that she passed out with a cigarette in her hand over a pile of newspapers. Phyliss did not set the fire. The question is, and I vaguely remember this, but I think it’s right, phyliss turned around and saw the flames, and kept going.
I think Phyliss is coming back, just not MS.
Sharon is not all sweetness and light.
She burned down the ranch, she stole Abby’s prize horse and gave it away, she ruined Newman Enterprises, she knowingly misidentified another man as Victor and had him cremated, wonder where his family thinks he is?
And that’s just the recent stuff, the list goes on and on.
What they have done to Victor’s character borders on criminal, he was always ruthless but they’ve turned him into a diabolical busybody.

The writers will copy GH, as they have before, especially now with JP.

” Cassie’s death, it is one of the most dramatic story points ever in soaps.”

LOL only because we have to relive her death for a week or two ever since her death, and that has become so much boring nonsense..

Many others have died dramatically in the soaps, many others had great deaths too. But, Y&R can’t let it go as the others soaps have..
Y&R relives Cassie’s death for the past 100 years, it seems that long..lol
The newer viewers never seen or heard of Cassie’s death..

Oh yes, newer viewer do know about Cassie’s death because they have been harping about since the day I started watching the show 2 years ago. (The Monday after OLTL was taken off the air.) Every few months, it’s a anniversary of Cassie’s death or Cassie’s birthday or someone visits Cassie’s grave. The death of a child is a horribly tragic event; but, both Sharon and Nick have been paralyzed by it. Especially, Sharon. Please correct me if I’m wrong. From what I understand, Summer is the result of a relationship between Nick and Phyllis that occurred after Cassie’s death. Summer is a grown woman. Therefore, Cassie had to die at least 18 years ago. (I realize soaps manipulate time and ages for story line purposes.) I certainly hope this new character turns out to be a twin. Maybe, just maybe, let us pray, we can finally get over Cassie’s death.

like she was the one and only soap character to die LOL
If Y&R has to hang in there via Cassie’s death, that is sad indeed.. (but seems Cassie’s death is Y&R’s ace in the hole)

    Mary SF replied

I don’t know what you and suooo object too– obviously neither of you have ever loss a child or someone you deeply cared about die– because if you did you would know NO ONE gets over a death of loved one– yes time goes one, but birthdays, anniversaries etc are still remembered. Today is the 19th anniversary of my father’s funeral— and I remembered it as much as would remember a wedding anniversary. Y&R is writing believable stories about real life, not the nonsense that goes on GH, with crime families and baby switching. The story isn’t the ace in the hole, it is a honest portrayal of what many families endure. I find it refreshing that this show at least remembers Cassie existed unlike so many soaps who kill off family members and then thet are never mentioned again– which never happens in real life, in real life the dead are spoken about, and somethings often. As for how long its been, the character died in 2005, it hasn’t even been 10 years, but SORASing of Summer, Noah etc, makes it seem longer than it was.

You know what you come on to bash YR to only prop up GH. |( First of all YR has had many dramatic moments in its history….I’ve been watching for 41 years and if you know any history at all and Bill Bell’s mastery of storytelling you would know this in spades. This is what YR was built on big dramatic stories and psychological twist with long-term stories. YR doesn’t have to rely on a high camp, umpteen villains dominating a canvas, vampires, icing the world, vile characters never dying but constantly be resurrecting from using cryonic frozen stories , the mobs dominating stories and killing people but never pay the piper. You can have you opinion fair enough but being a longtime viewer I have mine also to express. :| The story of Cassie’s death was breathtaking and brilliantly wrote. It has drove story for many years and this is example of what a great story will do bring on continuing story years later. As AW’s mantra “the continuing story”….YR by telling these type of stories and coming from the pen of Bill Bell has made this show number 1 for the last 25 years by kicking GH from the number one spot back in ’88. GH has even close since this time.

Well said, Harlee. Y&R’s Cassie was an extremely beloved child character of two very beloved parental characters (Nick adopted Cassie as his own daughter) and two beloved grandparental characters (Nikki and Victor, not to mention Doris, who occasionally showed up for a visit). To have decades of storylines come to a crashing end, and others develop, because of Cassie’s death has been amazing. And yes, Summer IS a product of Nick and Phyllis’s affair that he had with her when he couldn’t handle being around Sharon after Cassie died. Phyllis didn’t know she could conceive, so Summer is her “miracle baby,” and as much as she’s loved Jack over the years, she loved Nick even more during the time they were together. But the breakup it caused, the heartache and the downfall of an amazing character (Sharon) has been hard to watch, but believe me, it’s better than anything I’ve seen on other soaps lately (or in years)…
wolfy (a historical viewer of Y&R)

    wolfsmistress replied

BTW … Jack and Nikki’s son died even longer ago than Cassie, yet he’s mentioned once in awhile as well, as he donated his heart to another child (which was part of the organ donation storyline for Delia’s death), as was the fact that Jack understood about losing a child, as did Nikki, Victoria, Ashley, Tracy, Paul and a lot of other characters on the show, which is why I get so angry at new writers who don’t bother to learn the history of the show prior to writing storylines. If half of the characters who said, “I don’t know how Billy feels” or “I can’t imagine how Billy/Chloe feel” when it came to Delia’s death were honest, they DID know and COULD imagine it, because they themselves had been through it! I just wish the writers would have shown the support that Billy and Chloe really needed with all the people who’ve lost their children on Y&R … Billy would never have slept with Kelly [or needed her "friendship"] and Chloe would never have kidnapped Connor (or ever even considered it). History, people, HISTORY!! It’s there for a reason…

wolfsmistress, if memory serves me correctly I believe Phack also lost a baby pre-Summer. This was why Phyllis wasn’t sure “who the daddy” story arose causing more story because Phack was trying or wanted a baby again…I could be wrong, maybe I getting another story confused. Yes, I do remember when Jack\Nikki lost their baby. I think she was horseback riding and fell which led to the next storyliine of Nikki getting hooked on pain pills.

If it turns out to be a long lost twin I will swallow it because they do that a lot but a look a like . NO!!! As far as GH I call it the Walking Dead. It is pure camp their is no Drama what so ever. Watching MW/Ava hold that gun and her twenty minute blabbering was too much.

I disagree- death stories suck and should not be used for ratings for a decade or more.. And Y&R uses Cassie’s death constantly in stories to feed of off it..
I still think they should build a huge monument to Cassie and show it first thing in the opening LOL

And; I am a fan of Y&R sand GH. love them both, but GH is the better.. at least it doesn’t build on a girls death for a decade..
Soaps characters die.. we watch the story and move on not exploit it for a decade for numbers..
I do not like that of Y&R ..
Hopefully now with this Cassie story it will finally end the constant reliving of Cassie’s death.. :)

The bottom line Collen/Traci’s daughter should be mentioned more Victor has her heart. The whole storyline with Billy should have been Traci, Nick,& Sharon counseling him on what it is like to lose a child. But no instead we get grief sex with a newbie.

I think its great having her back even if I hate Victor right now for doing this horrific cruel thing to Sharon. I think what would be perfect is if she is Cassie’s twin that Ian stole because Doris kept Sharon out of Ians life because Ian is Sharon bio Daddy making her Dylans half sister. Both Ian and Faux Cassie came to GC around the same time she said she is there for a reason maybe she over heard something Ian said and was told a lie all these years. Now she is seeing how much Sharon loved Cassie so maybe she would of loved her as well? Just my thoughts but either way I am glad she is back and would love to see where this goes.

I think we will find out that Ian isn’t Dylan’s father, but Paul is. It is just a hunch based on Ian telling both Paul and Dylan about some kind of secret they should know about. I know when Dylan first came on the canvas there was talk about making him Sharon’s half brother, but that writer has since left the show, so the two who took over might have different plans. Doesn’t mean fake Cassie can’t end up being Sharon’s daughter somehow, but I don’t think it will be through the Ian connection.

I actually love this story. Cassie’s death was the tragic plot point that has driven this show for almost a decade now. I am definitely curious who this new girl is, and I’m loving how she dishes it back Victor’s way. Long-lost twins are a little over-used as plot devices, but I can accept this one, since Camryn is grounding this character and adding layers I didn’t expect. That little girl all grown up can act! Maybe they’ll write something really good, like Sharon is Ian Ward’s daughter, too, and he stole one of her babies.

I guess I have watched this show entirely too long. Nothing surprises me any longer. Since this has become the Victor Newman Hour it did not take a rocket scientist to figure out that this one had Victor written all over it.

My only concern is the rumors about her being Daisy are true I would be so upset. Why bring this despise character that fans hated back to the canvas. If so I have a deep problem after 41 years watching this soap. We don’t need any of MAB’s created characters because she caused damage to YR in several ways. She wasn’t liked by viewers but rather hated for most part and Daisy viewers definitely hated so this could be a grave mistake on this team and cause some backlash.

I rather she is a twin of Cassie only to be raised opposite of Cassie, possibly in the foster system and has huge chip on shoulder. Love to see Sharon have a part back of Cassie back creating a huge story. Not only Sharon but this will affect Nick deeply in the story.

    Mary SF replied

I agree, why bring back the actress who portrayed a beloved character just to make her Daisy? Writers will only get future compensation for characters they create, so why use a MAB creation? It makes far more sense to make this character a whole new person and not Daisy. If they go the Daisy route it would be a big mistake.

I think in this case, the unknown twin is possible. We know Doris was not thrilled when Sharon got pregnant and pushed her into the whole adoption thing. It would be in keeping with Doris’s style to keep Sharon in the dark about having twins and never telling her — because she knew Sharon couldn’t handle the truth of knowing she had to give up two babies.
So although not always thrilled with the new writers, so far they kept things more rooted in reality than MAB, so fingers crossed they keep it that way.

Considering that faux-Cassie has already stated to Victor that she likes Sharon and doesn’t like how Victor is treating Sharon, I’m wondering if this whole thing is finally going to backfire on the Black Knight pretty soon. While Sharon may be considering being hospitalized or taking even stronger medications to help “get rid” of her “delusions,” “Cassie” herself may finally not be able to stand it and come right out and tell Sharon that the whole thing is a set-up by Victor. I’m hoping that the girl, who seems to have some pretty good guts when it comes to standing up to The Mustache, just might blow his cover and tell all to prevent Sharon from doing something to herself. The kid seems to like her, and while I don’t know if it’s possible for Sharon to have had twins without knowing all these years, I guess it COULD happen.

Happened to Donna on Another World … in fact, she had TRIPLETS and never knew about all three of them! Amazing … you’d think that the size of her belly alone would have let her know more than one kid had to be in there! Sorry … just sayin, here…

But seriously, I’m hoping faux-Cassie sticks around. Even if she’s a complete stranger who does just happen to look like their daughter, she may turn out to be a nice kid who got into a spot of trouble that Victor is holding over her head as a threat, and Nick and Sharon can show her a good way of life instead. It would be nice to have Grimes back on a contract again.

I’m enjoying this storyline. I always liked Cassie, & thought her dying was such a touching & sad story. The acting by Nick & Sharon was so well done. I’m finding it interesting that Victor found a look alike. Hope he doesn’t get away with this, but he seems to get away with everything. It would be nice for once if he didn’t. I wish Nick would see “Cassie” tormenting Sharon & find out his father is responsible.

I’m glad to see her back and she has been a great actress since childhood. But the story is very predictable and cliche’d. Who else would gas light Sharon but Victor. And this story is way too dark for even him.
Also its ut terly stupid that sharon would even touch her and still be stupid enough to believe she was a ghost or hallucination.
The writers have written sharon as dumb for years now but this takes the cake lol. Finally this entire story has been a super silly way to prop up the paternity switch debacle that should have been resolved years ago.

It would make most sense if Grimes’ new character were another unknown younger daughter of Frank Barritt (Cassie’s bio-dad). That way, she would Cassie’s younger half sister. That could explain the resemblance, as well as why this new character is now younger than Cassie’s brother, Noah. It would also provide a link to Sharon, since she would undoubtedly want to form a relationship with someone who is related so closely to Cassie.

Some viewers may not remember this, but Frank was married to another woman. We actually met her when Grace and Tony went looking for Frank in hopes of finding Cassie. So Frank going on to have another child prior to his death would be very possible.

I forgot all about that and yes you’re right it could go this way….still hope it’s Sharon deep down. This will create a great story for Sharon & Nick together. Nick loved Cassie as his own and if it’s Cassie’s twin he will be drawn deeply to this girl.

I hope that Faux Cassie takes Victor down, and blows his cover wide open, because this madness needs to stop! For a billionaire business tycoon, it’s just disturbing and very not healthy how Victor obsesses about Sharon all the time. I am so tired of Victor and how dark this story is becoming. This is low….even for Victor. Oh….and P.S…….I hope that Jack is (somehow) Summer’s father. Then there will be one less family member for Victor to manipulate and control.

I think this is a twin storyline. Or a really good doppelgänger. But I love having Camryn back on Y&R and hope she sticks around this time!! I would love to see her developed into a core character, again!

Could Mariah be Cassie twin – because she is Sharon long last Daughter and Grace Turner Sharon’s Newman former friend did not giver her much about the baby that she was raising for Sharon – please bring back Grace Turner to tell the truth about Sharon babies and why she give one up for adoption is because things get tough for her she give it up for adoption and Ian ward know about it. Bring back Grace Turner so she can explain to Sharon what happen when she give birth to twins. Only Grace Turner can explain to Sharon Newman what happen to when she give birth to twins.
