Carolyn Conwell who from 1980-2004 played Mary Williams on The Young and the Restless had died at the age of 82.  Her long time TV son, Doug Davidson (Paul Williams) was very close to Carolyn, and in fact, in many interviews with us over the years cited her performances and work as some of the best he has ever seen or had the pleasure to work with during his career.

Within the last 24 hours, Davidson took to his Facebook page to post a special heartfelt message to his fans and colleagues, after attending Conwell’s funeral this past Sunday.

Davidson stated,  “As some of you might know Carolyn Conwell (Mary Williams) passed. I attended her funeral yesterday and her two sons and daughter were in attendance. She was the finest actor I have ever known and such a giving soul. Her progeny are fabulous people. A credit to a life well lived. I truly can’t say enough about her. I love her and miss her presence. God bless her and her family.”

We know many long time fans of Y&R remember many of the scenes were Mary was meddling in the lives of her children, but always loved them deeply.    Let us know your thoughts on the passing of Conwell and Davidson’s message!

I know she has not been mentioned on the soap in years they even tried to get her back several years ago with the Patty saga but I really think it would be nice if they wrote her death in on Y&R and gave us some memorable moments. She was so good that I use to scream at the TV she drove me so nuts! RIP a truly fine actress.

I agree. They could do it and have it all make sense. Poor Paul, though. Another loss for the character.

I remember her too. It seems like it was so much longer than 2004 when she was last on. Same with the Gina character.

Can’t you just smell the sauerkraut and spareribs cooking from heaven? I agree they should write her death into the show and give Mary Williams a proper send off. It would be the classy thing to do considering the character still has a connection to GC via Paul. But I guess it depends on what they are going to with DD. Are they keeping him or preparing for him to ride off into sunset with Christine? At the very least they should dedicate a show in her memory.

That is what I am worried about when they asked LB to stick around for a while Heather is gone I mean it is no secret I like DD. Even though the character of Avery is younger then he I was hoping that would be the direction they would go with Paul not Nick the new rock star. Go check out on You tube some scenes with Paul and his mother no one could meddle like her.

I wondered why there was not a Mary Williams recast at least during that horrid crazy Patty Williams/Dr. Emily storyline. Well, it would be hard to find someone to replace Ms. Conwell.

Ms. Conwell played Mary Williams so well. Mary was one of those characters the grounded the show among the wealthy Newman/Abbott sagas. I wish we would have seen more of the Williams family develop. Remember in the 1980s when Paul was married to Lauren and mary just had a field day with her! Sadly, MAB blew a chance for such a good story of redemption for Paul and Ricky by crafting an awkward and unsatisfying plot there.

Doug Davidson and Paul Williams are such Y&R legacies, I think it would be very good for JFP/Josh to give him some happiness, a new start in life. (Maybe let him really solve a case!) Perhaps this joy will happen with Christine Blair. They are two souls as each has lost all family connections.

What a hoot! Cheers and a salute to Talent. She eminated fierce motherhood. i can only think of one other mother… who was just as good… and that’s Enid, Gregs’ mother, on all my children…. these two… eschewed all their scenes…. made them their own….

I loved the passion and realness she brought to the Y&R canvas and missed her presence in Paul’s life these past several years. Thank you, Mrs. Conwell, for everything! Best to those she leaves behind.
