52 April 30th, 2014 Y&R’s Jill Farren Phelps On The Faux Cassie is Mariah Twist and Connecting Her To Ian!

Courtesy/CBS

If you missed Tuesday’s episode of The Young and the Restless, go back and watch it asap!  It was finally revealed and confirmed for soap fans that the Cassie imposter was indeed Tyler’s ex girlfriend, Mariah!  But there was more and this one was unexpected!  Mariah knows evil Ian Ward, which makes this girl, even badder than one could have imagined!

The executive producer of Y&R, Jill Farren Phelps spoke with TV Guide Magazine’s Michael Logan all about the twists including how she was able to keep the talented Ray Wise (Ian) on the canvas as Ian and how the decisions were made to link Camryn Grimes (Mariah) back into the canvas!  Here are a few excerpts below!

Jill on at what point did the soap decide to make Faux Cassie, Mariah: “Very early on. As soon as Tyler even mentioned there was a Mariah, the writers knew it would be Fake Cassie. She is going to be a huge threat to the Abby-Tyler relationship, which we know really needed some help. Mariah will also continue to have enormous involvement in the Sharon-Nick story and, obviously, her relationship with Ian is going to be big when it’s finally discovered by other people. She’s a wild girl, not a good girl like Cassie, and that will impact the whole Newman family.”

Jill on how after Ray Wise’s 10 day stint was finished how they wrote him back into the show after putting Ian in behind bars:  “That was supposed to be Ian’s swan song, but then we got word that Ray really wanted to stay. He’s very happy here with us. So then we had to get him out of jail. Now we have a long-term plan in place. That’s not to say he won’t be in and out of Genoa City — Ray is a very busy actor — but we have great story coming up for him. June is going to be huge and very crazy. We’ll keep Ian in town, initially, with the Mariah connection and the history of their relationship, but there’s a much bigger picture to be revealed.”

So what did you think of the reveals?  Were you surprised to find out Mariah was connected to Ian?   Are you glad that Mariah will cause some much needed drama in the Tyler/Abby relationship?  Let us know your thoughts!

I was surprised that Faux Cassie is Mariah.
Didn’t Leslie tell Tyler awhile back that he
probably was attracted to Lily because Lily
resembled Mariah? Well, Faux Cassie looks
    nothing like Lily.
Don’t know what to make of the Ian connection
to Faux Cassie (soap was interrupted when Ian
came to her hotel room) but will be interesting
    to find out.

I remember that too– and she certainly doesn’t look or act like anything like Lily– but I think when they wrote that they didn’t know they were going bring back the actress who played Cassie and make her into Mariah.

As for the Ian connection— they didn’t reveal anything that day— but it appears she is one of his students or clients, whatever—and by the conversation it sounded like the two of them being in GC at the same time was a coincidence, not planned.

Except JFP stated in the interview that they knew from the moment Mariah was spoken of that CG would play her! She has totally forgotten what the writers wrong about her being anything like Lily

Sharon and Dylan can finally be siblings now. Ian and Sharon share the same father and Ian took one of Sharons twins

Please you have no idea for long term story you just fly by the seat of your pants and to putt CG with Tyler & Abby who I am sorry are very weak in their acting skills is criminal!

At least nuAbby can act. She carries herself well and she looks like she could be Ashley’s daughter and has the snobbishness of Victor if she wanted. The other actress was really good but to move her character into a more mature direction, I think this new actress will be fine.

  4. Iakovos says:

Just so she is not Sheila or Patty or their secretr progeny or someone who had massive reconstructive surgery to look like Cassie!

While the death of Cassie provided great story — echoed by the death of Delia — I was sad the character was gone. Miss Grimes was very good in the role. What fun for her return to be a bad girl, one that could be on the canvas along time. Maybe she could be the bad girl who reforms somehwat but is always destined to make bad choices, like a Carly on ATWT or the original character concept of Heather on GH (before Heather became unbearingly weird).

LMAO at your description of Heather…unbearingly weird. Quite the understatement I would say. Bat shit whack job is even putting it mildly.

It is very encouraging that this show is finally beginning to tell some dramatically interwoven stories! Instead of just a bunch of random scenes about disjointed people we are getting stories with some impact! I think it would be a shame to not make Mariah Sharon’s daughter whom Ian somehow stole at birth. But I think these writers are hitting some good notes and are much better than the dreadful year where Griffith just wrote a whole lotta nothin’. I am not completely convinced yet…they still have a lot of damage to repair…like revealing once and for all that Summer is an Abbott. And making Nick and Sharon rock solid again like they were for so long. And…making the character of Kelly make sense and giving her a purpose. But I will give it time. I am a lot more encouraged than I have been in a long time.

I really hope they don’t make Mariah Sharon’s long-lost daughter because I really don’t see what the point would be; we’ve already had Cassie. I’d also find it way too far-fetched (and, yes, I know it’s a soap). I’d find it far more interesting to watch them develop a bond without a biological connection.

Yes, I agree! It feels so corny to me to see Sharon’s all grown up daughter play such a mature role. Not only that, to me the role shes playing is more suited for someone with more safistication. To me a women with safistication like Lilly ,Hillary or Abby. She still has this baby look and sound, and to me shes trying to hard to be. To me she’s no where near the type of women that would draw in a man like Tyler. This role I think is way to old for her, wrong role. Really Y&R! Where is the great creative storylines of long ago. This storyline is so unbelievabl0e. I think you still have time to repair it. Just like when you forgot you compaired Mariah to Lilly. I also want to see Sharon and Nick drawing there way back to who they should have never been apart from, each other. Phyllis was way to evil for Nick. She was way more suited for his EVIL FATHER, Victor Newman. Also, who ever is writing these storylines must really like Father and son rivalry. First, it wasto the Nick, Sharon, Victor. Now they are doing it again to Neil and Devon. I think Devon has been through enough, let him have some happiness and bring Drusilla back.

I was kinda hoping FauxCassie wouldn’t be Mariah, Tyler’s ex – then again, this could work out to the audience’s benefit if the writers somehow tie all this together logically.

Are Leslie, Tyler & Mariah connected with Ian? If so, to what degree? Were they part of his minions – are they in cahoots with Ian? If so, I hope there will be a big payoff for the viewers as the storyline builds and falls to a good conclusion.

While I think Ray Wise is a quality actor, I personally never like the character Ian and was really happy when he went to jail and thought we were done with him. So I was not happy with his return and I am really disappointed to hear his stay will be indefinite– but by the way everyone keeps threatening him, I am hoping the character ends up dead even if it means having to endure a tedious murder mystery in the process.

I don’t even watch Y&R anymore and I predicted this “twist”. I’m happy that Camryn Grimes has a job again, I always liked her as an actress and she’s grown into a beautiful young woman, but this will be exactly like the Emily/Rebecca storyline on General Hospital- it will go nowhere. They will come to an impasse where the writers will no longer be able to write for the character and they will be forgotten within a matter of weeks.

I’m sure the reveal of “Faux Cassie” was impressive, as well as the Mariah/Tyler scenes and I’m glad you fans who have stuck with Y&R finally have SOME semblance of a decent show, but until Jill Farren Phelps is booted, I cannot, in good conscience, support this show.

  16. Leah says:

Y&R used stand-ins who were never identical; even the hands were different in each “peek”. Recall Feb. when Tyler left the gala to see Mariah; the arm was ‘white’ with an ash blonde wig. Yeah, Leslie said Lily reminded her of Mariah but she also alluded to Tyler’s propensity to go after married women. That may have been the similarity.

Whatever, a way to keep CG on canvas and an attempt at an umbrella story. Hope everyone isn’t in The Path. But kind of interesting, for now.

A casting call for Dr. Barton Shelby was issued a couple of weeks ago. We’ll likely see him at the end of May/June. I think it’s strange that the writers would have Leslie marry and not have her husband already cast.

This storyline with Fake Cassie being Mariah is awful…. really not impressed at all. Tyler has zero chemistry with her…she looks like a child! What are they thinking? Absolutely ridiculous…

Once Abby takes one look at this “child” ex of Tylers she will maybe open her eyes!

  19. EC says:

I don’t believe JFP’s comment that they always knew Mariah would be faux Cassie. Tyler first mentioned Mariah over a year ago in early 2013. CG first appeared in July and she confirmed in her Michael Fairman interview that she was originally only supposed to appear in 4-6 episodes. Then in October she was told she was being kept on and who her real identity was. It looks to me that producers wanted to keep CG on the show so they made her be Mariah (who had yet to be cast).

Sometimes history rewrites work and sometimes they don’t. So far, I don’t like the rewrite of Mariah. I would have preferred if it was someone resembling Lily.

As for “Cassie”, I don’t mind her being connected to Ian. But I would have preferred another character name.

Based on what I’m watching I find it hard to believe anything on this show is planned five minutes before it hits the screen.

And yes, I too thought Mariah’s wrist looked darker complected than the pale Ms. Grimes.

This whole faux Cassie mess does nothing but dilute the story that dispatched her character the first time. (And when they reveal that Sharon didn’t know she had twins it will serve to make the character look dumber and like an even worse mother than when she sex with 3 men without using protection and ended with that daughter she abandoned twice for Adam…)

The faux Cassie story, the Newman drama, and the Villy marriage crisis are the stories keeping me casually tuned in. Camryn has drawn me back in. Cute and sweet little girl grew up into a talented young beauty and quite the firecracker. Also, I’m so thankful David Tom is back. I realize there are a lot of BM fans, but BM was the recast, not David Tom. Here are some of my wishes for a Y&R future where all or most stories are back to full capacity Bill Bell style:
    1) The return of Ashley Bashioum as Mac and a Mac/Billy reunion
    2) The return of Tad Luckinbill and Heather Tom and a Victoria/JT reunion (If Heather Tom can’t or won’t return, I think Sarah Brown should make a good Victoria. This Victoria is too sweet, and doesn’t have the Victoria “edge”)
    3) The return of Michelle Stafford and a Phyllis/Nick reunion, especially on the heels of Sharon’s paternity switch reveal
    4) The return of Eileen Davidson as Ashley whom the men fight over: Dillon, Stitch, and a freshly dumped by Nikki Victor
    5) Another Jack and Jill feud that sparks a romantic reunion where they finally discover they’re each other’s true soul mate
    6) A Lauren/Paul/Nikki reunion/triangle, especially after the death of Cricket the “bug”, who is killed in an accident along with Michael. I adore Christian Leblanc, but this character, along with Kevin’s, has run its course.
    7) Tricia Cast’s return as Nina, who figures into the Paul story as well as the returns of J. Eddie Peck’s Cole Howard and Beth Maitland’s Tracy 8) The return of Adam portrayed by a strong charismatic actor who looks like a Newman, whose feud with the villainous Victor goes into high gear with collateral damage for seasons to come
    9) The return of Greg Vaughan as the virtuous Diego who competes with tormented bad Newman seed Adam for Sharon’s freshly broken heart
    10) A plane crash caused by the oh so scary Australian mafia that leaves the following characters dead or presumed dead: Neal, Leslie, Lily, Devon, Cane, Hilary, Colin, et al. I’d rather watch my cat groom herself than suffer through these boring characters’ story lines, each of whom has the personality of a dial tone. Why can’t these writers write interesting black people? Doesn’t anyone remember Drucilla, Malcolm or Sophia? These characters were the gold standard. If they want to keep them, why not turn little Devon into a ruthless businessman like his father and a real and viable threat to that blow-hard, Victor Newman’s tyrannous reign. Turn Lily into a scheming, bitter spurned witch, after being conned by the mysterious, yet dully so, Cain for the umpteenth time. Do SOMETHING, writers, to make these characters interesting. It’s not fair to the talented actors who portray them, and it’s not fair to the audience. The year is 2014, by the way. You still can’t write an interesting minority character?
Anyway, feel free to comment, and I hope maybe JFP will read my thoughts. They’re only my opinions and wishes, but since I’ve watched the show since the 70′s, I really know a lot about Y&R. hehe

yayyyy!!!! y n r has been so exciting these past couple of weeks!!! im actually looking forward to my genoa city again.!!
c mon people give the writers and producers a break! is the show perfect : no
is the show ever going to be like when bill bell was running it: probably not , but is the show much improved from the yawner is was last year or the disaster it was under mab or llm : big time !!!
faux cassie, nick and Sharon are the highlight of the show,
ian ward is deliciously evil and smarmy ,
Neil/ Hillary/ devon triangle is brewing for a good ol lily/ Hilary showdown!! lily is the best shes ever been when nasty and protective of her brother and dad!
cant wait to see who leslies husband is!
tyler and abby are finally getting something to do! nuabby is warming up to me, besides being beautiful and stunning like her mom Ashley. Tyler is sooo sexxxy and rugged at the same time now that hes denying mariahs advances!! I think abby and tyler imo are sweet and a breath of fresh air!
nikki and victor are on the rocks again which is where I ilke them most, sparing and at odds. lovey dovey nikki/ vic are boring! if only Ashley were around to pick up the pieces!
the only weak points right now are for me are new/ old billy, avery/ whatshisname and colin/ jill., and the background music. I like some of the new background music but some of the old classic beats are much missed and really added to the drama
I would love to see nina back and interact with jill and paul again!
As well have Olivia come back to be a sounding board for Neil. I actually think a Neil, Olivia, Jack triangle would be interesting cause all three characters are core and have a history. now that Neil is jacks sponsor and Olivia is a doctor and a old childhood friend of Ashleys their could be many reasons for each of them to come together organicall
all the things considered hats off to jean and shelly and jfp and all my fave actors who have turned y n r from the chore and bore it had recently been to must see again.!!!

First of all Mariah was a woman of color when they first showed her body parts, hands, arms etchy. So how did she turn while? The story lines aren’t making a lot of since lately, especially with all the switching of characters! The characters are starting to look unbelievable even for a soap!!! They need to bring Drusilla back and a new Malcomn to spice this dull soap up!!! And not that last Malcolm, but someone that closely resembles Shemar Mooore. But they need to bring the old Drusilla Back!!! She was great! And for sure they need Phyllis old or new, but a spicy redhead!!! Also where’s J.T. And Mac! Get them back! I know you can’t replace Mrs C. (Chancellor) but you can find a new Matriarc, they need one.

Wonder which woman in Sharon’s past gave him Mariah? Could it be Sharon’s mother, and why is she in that wheelchair, or could it be Cassie’s adoptive mother? I really love the focus on Nick and Sharon. Happy that MS is at GH. Now if they would just recast Dru and get Neil back with his true love all would be right with this day one viewer.
