75 March 28th, 2016 Y&R’s Nikki and B&B’s Katie Battle The Bottle: Do You Enjoy Seeing Your Soap Heroines Liquored Up?

Courtesy/CBS

This week, CBS Daytime has two long-running heroines hitting the sauce when pressure and their relationships get too much for them.

First, over at The Young and the Restless, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) starts drinking again as Victor’s (Eric Braeden) trial unfolds and the verdict comes in.  Jack (Peter Bergman) comes upon her having a drink and being rather tipsy, and she firmly tells him to leave her alone!

Over at The Bold and the Beautiful, try as she might the only comfort Katie (Heather Tom) is receiving is from a bottle of booze.  She can’t seem to get the notion of her husband Bill (Don Diamont) and her sister Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) reuniting out of her head.  In complete denial that she has a problem with alcohol, Katie keeps drinking.

Daytime fans have loved watching Melody Thomas Scott over the years as a drunk Nikki, and now five-time Daytime Emmy winner Heather Tom is engrossed in her first story dealing with a character’s drinking problem.

Over the years on soaps, viewers have watched many of their favorite soap heroines at one time or another battle alcoholism. This begs the question: Do you enjoy seeing your soap heroines liquored up?

Watch this week’s promo from Y&R and B&B after the jump which features Nikki going off the wagon, and Katie continuing to drink.  Then let us know if you hope these women continue to spiral out of control, because you enjoy these scenes and the acting contained within them … or …  do you wish the characters would just sober up, and not go down that path?  Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

Or Nikki gets a prescription for medical marijuana and it helps with her pain and MS and keeps her sober so she then buys the espresso shop and turns it into a dispensary and makes a life of her own although then she wouldn’t be dependent on a man to make her whole so nevermind.

I hate seeing Nikki always go back to the bottle and the thing is she never really has any fun or pulls a Phoebe Tyler when she is. But this will give Neil a chance to rescue Nikki during Victor’s short prison stint and with his new “Foundation” can care for and hopefully bed Nikki. Katie is just going to drive her husband to her sister.

Come on, is Victor the only one who can smell vodka on Nikki? And no matter how well the actors can do their liquored up scenes it starts to grow realllllll old. I don’t want to diminish how hard this problem of alcoholism is to “cure”…I realize it’s a lifelong challenge. But I just get tired of it being overused in soaps.

    Mary SF replied

That was SO LAME– how long has Nikki been boozing it up, and Victor never knew when she had fallen off the wagon before, and NOW he suddenly can smell the vodka on her breath from a distance in a courtroom, but not when he was lying right beside her in bed the last time she was on the sauce.

And before Pratt, writers kept Nikki clean and sober for years, now she is constantly falling off the wagon– you are right it is a serious disease, but they have her lose her sobriety at a drop of a hat, they do give the wrong the impression that it is okay to go off the wagon because you can go back to being sober anytime you like, sort of like cheating on your diet–and going back on it then next day– it is rarely that easy.

On one hand, I believe that addiction and abuse of alcohol is a very real issue. Story lines revolving around the subject reflect life and could be helpful to those that are effected by it. Having main characters like Nikki have the issue is a reminder that anyone is susceptible to access and addictions. Now on the other hand, I feel like the writers are reflecting that they are out of ideas by going down this road over and over. Yes- it is a continual life struggle and that should be told throughout the character’s life. Does it have to happen every two weeks and then they are sober two days later?? For me, no. So my personal opinion is that it’s great they tell these stories but they need to limit how often, adjust the how, and stop making every character an addict of some sort every single time something bad happens.

No one does drunk better than Melody Thomas Scott. She just hits it right every time. While I tend to think that the writers box her into the alcohol trigger way too often, she always presents it well. Only one other actress, Linda Gray, does liquor better. All the rest of the “tv alcoholics” always overact it. Melody just has it down pat and does it perfectly. I knew Victor being on trial and her going against him would cause her to stumble but as long as she is featured prominently I am down for the ride with Nikki again. She is just a great actress when she is given meat to chew on. I wish they would find a way to give her something different to bite into but since this is what we get as viewers then I say, “bartender, give the lady a cocktail and make it a double!”

I cannot refute that, Mateo. Nikki IS the best drunk on soaps, after Catherine Chancellor. …love the actress…always on cue! But, I am sick of the character.
Nikki needs to get a life once and for all. I become very incensed at the writers for constantly placing Nikki in these dire, ‘help-me’ drunken situations. She has tried so many times before. So, as far as I can see, the outcome will always be the same.
Stop the insanity once and for all.

I don’t watch B&B a lot, but I caught a couple of episodes this week. I think that Heather Tom is playing the part really well, of a hurt (and yes, scorned) wife-a betrayed wife and sister; however, what I don’t understand, is that every time I watch a new episode, I feel as thought it is the same episode over and over again. Katie, telling Brooke that she is not allowed in close vicinity of her, her husband, her home, her office-to stay away; then, Brooke is invited to Katie’s house-having dinner and a fight implodes. Makes no sense.

This sad story line on both shows are disgusting and portray women as weak and pathetic. Women are stronger than the way Nicki and Kathie on the Y&R and BB shows respectively are portray. First Nicki is leading the charge to remove her husband from his business. She, Nicki was powerful in her talks to everyone involved but in one day she is downing drinks like water. What happen to her medical condition that almost took her life about one month ago when she move from the ranch to the club. Now she is so upset with the trail that she has drink.
Now Kathie is drinking straight whisky or whatever to help with her distrust of her sister Brooke. What happened to her heart transplant. You cannot survive a heart transplant drinking a lot of liquor. You were stupid enough to to take your husband back after he was going to marry your sister, that doesn’t happen in real life. I know this is my opinion but really, women are not this frail and weak to be portray in such a “Suck on Stupid” story and I hope the power to be realize this and change their perception of women.

I wondered the same things, Coco. It does seem that way- the “womenfolk” totally dependent on their men- for love, for identity, everything. I was excited that Sage, Sharon, and Chelsea were going to go to work together and thought this would be a female empowerment story but we both know that will soon totally collapse. I do like Katie drunk though, as she is a mean psycho drunk and should raise some hell before she drives hubby into Brooke’s arms which will probably drive Brooke back to the bottle. What happened to the strong matriarchs that were more than a match for any man in town?

    Rose replied

Côco and Peggy…it’s as if Victor has ESP to know the weaknesses of the family members so he can push their buttons. We already know Adam’s need to be recognized and loved, but it really bothers me when Victor preys on the “girls.” There’s Summer’s trusting ” big heart.” (I know there are mixed reviews on Summer, but I think she’s been doing a good job carrying off a difficult and emotional part right now.). Abby’s looking for more than being a Barbie Doll, and Grandpa gave her that. Then there’s Victoria, daddy’s little girl, and rightly or wrongly in her mind, always second to Adam. (I know there are mixed reviews on Summer, but I think she’s been doing a good job carrying off a difficult and emotional part tight now). Nikki…as long as she’s drinking he has her “under his thumb.”

    Reply

    Dave M replied

Rose, you make a stunning point- a sociopath or narcissist HAS ESP- seriously- they are human predators- in every sense. They seek wounded birds, lonely, gullible people to sink their teeth into and bat them around and bite and chew– and only spit them out when THEY deign they are finished. Brings to mind Betty Broderick- the San Diego socialite/housewife who could not, would not-let go- even when before the parole board would not, could not see how she in any way was at fault in her murdering her ex-husband and his new wife. Meredith Baxter was riveting in her portrayal of her and had hoped for a little Betty when she came to GC but she ran away to parts unknown.

    Helen replied

I know this is fiction- but Victor is a classic Narcissist and some of the hallmarks of the disorder- which is not a “fault”- it is something they can’t really help and they lack empathy. Yep. those tears are always for themselves or to manipulate to get what they want. “gaslighting” is one of their special tricks too-along with the ESP they have to know who they can manipulate and usually the significant other is so beaten down they do not realize- and even when they do, like Nikki, they are ensconced firmly in a co-dependency with their abusive spouse- who can turn on the charm and affection when needed. They often make outstanding actors, politicians, it is all quite interesting and frightening as when you anger one- say an aspiring candidate- then you are treated to narcissistic rage that is relentless and unending- also they have real troubles with the truth- the truth for them changes to suit their needs. Meredith Baxter rocks but yes why did she run away and not return- come back, Betty Broderick and burn down something in GC!!

    Rose replied

Dave M and Helen…reading your comments makes me shiver that there are people like this, even if it’s no fault of their own.

    Norma replied

Rose- re the Y&R theme being played. There must be subliminal messages in it because it never, ever fails to suck me right in- just as it so magnificently did with Victor in the trial. Not being facetious, it truly does tug at my heart. Clearly, I have issues, though, as usually once a week when they play the intro I crank the volume and strut around my apartment as whomever is doing so on-screen.

Nikki hitting the bottle was pointless. Those were the worst courtroom scenes I have ever witnessed on daytime television. Victor would never defend himself. It was a poorly constructed few days, with horrible dialouge, nonsensical premises. Did Christine even object to anything that came out of Victor’s mouth?? I’d love to see the outtakes where Eric Braeden burst out laughing because his lines were so poorly written. Y&R used to be the best show on daytime. Nicki drinking was dumb, but Nicki having issues because of her MS, that would be interesting, but the writing staff has forgotten she has MS.

    CeeCee replied

You bet, Joe. Villanous Victor is looking more and more as the poor, misunderstood, loving family man whose family has turned its back on him. As I said, it was a pure THREE STOOGES skit.
Nikki’s drinking, I would think, was specifically re-introduced to bolster Victor’s affirmation that his wife’s utterings are nothing but the nonsensical words of a drunk.
That’s hitting below the belt on all their parts. Going against your own is a foreign concept to me. And, Victor put it into motion. As far as I am concerned they are all guilty, including the Abbotts. But, it does happen in real life. Not, by any means, what we saw in the courtroom thus far.
These writers, albeit the fiction, keep taking it a bit too far each and every time. Not entertaining in the least. They all looked like morons.
This trial is a complete waste of time. Bottom line? Victor, as usual, will emerge the ‘victor’, whether he spends some time in jail or not.

With Nikki, she has wealth to protect her from really facing the truth- or she has faced the truth and the bottle is more inviting. Also co-dependence is not just some made up term and many alcoholics or addicts or people that are vulnerable will latch on to someone that professes love yet is a controlling abuser and manipulator and it is a vicious circle of dependence.
