Sami asks Rafe how he feels about her, which leads to a fraught moment. EJ interrupts and pointedly asks Rafe about Nicole and the baby, successfully ruining the moment. Rafe abruptly leaves, but later finds he can’t get romantic thoughts of Sami out of his head. He encounters Lucas, and their conversation twigs Rafe to finally understand what EJ is doing – he’s using the fact that Rafe is (supposedly) the father of Nicole’s baby to drive a wedge between him and Sami. Rafe almost approaches Sami to tell her the truth, but for Nicole’s sake, pulls back. EJ makes his strong feelings clear to Sami, and is so romantic and persuasive she finds herself swept up in his plans. Later, those plans are aborted when Hope informs EJ he must resign as mayor. He does so, but makes a very pointed comment about wanting to spend more time with his family – and it’s clear he means Sami.
Nicole watches as Daniel passionately defends Jennifer to a bitter coworker, Anne. Nicole later “subtly” reminds Daniel that Jennifer will never get over losing the love of her life… Jack. She also shares her big news: her baby is a boy. She asks Daniel to be the godfather, and he accepts, based partly on his bittersweet memories of Parker. Nicole is confident the baby will draw them together, and later urges Daniel to feel her baby kick. Jennifer is upset that Daniel seems angry with her. Kayla thinks he’s just preoccupied but wonders why Jennifer is so bothered by it when they are just friends. Jennifer snaps at her, then quickly apologizes. She admits to Kayla she’s been on edge lately, ever since Jack’s death. Later, Kayla and Abe have a nice encounter as they talk about her taking over Lexie’s old job as hospital Chief of Staff. Melanie is stunned by Chad’s proposal and thinks he’s doing this because Nick is getting released from prison. Chad denies. He just loves her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. He gives Melanie time to think it over, and she seeks advice from Abigail.
Hope brings Nick to Maggie’s house. By the terms of his parole, he has to stay with family. Maggie, of course, agrees to take him in. Later, Melanie comes looking for Maggie, and comes face-to-face with Nick. Abigail comes on to Cameron but then pulls back again. He voices his understanding that she’s still not over her grief and guilt about her father, but Abigail doesn’t want to talk about it. He backs off. Abigail regrets pulling back and leaves a sexy voicemail for Cameron, which Jennifer overhears. Jennifer tries to counsel her daughter, making sure they are being safe. This leads to an argument in which Abigail blurts she’s a virgin.
Melanie receives an unexpected shock when she stops by the mansion to visit Maggie but comes face-to-face with Nick instead. Seeing her reaction, he takes a step towards her – only making things worse when she recoils in fear. Maggie arrives and asks Nick to give her a moment alone with her granddaughter. Maggie is beyond apologetic and says she wanted to warn Melanie that Nick had moved in. Melanie quickly denies she was frightened, insisting she was only surprised. Nevertheless, she is clearly shaken. She returns home to Chad and finally accepts his marriage proposal. Apologetic Nick tells Maggie it would be better for everyone if he found another place to live. Later, while looking for a job, he runs into Caroline and the tension is instantaneous, given their history. He apologizes for letting her take the rap for Trent’s murder all those years ago and knows he must prove to her – and everyone else – that he’s changed. Caroline surprises Nick by offering him a job at the pub, where he can demonstrate just how dedicated he is to turning his life around.
Jennifer and Abigail have a fight, fueled by the grief they’re both feeling over the loss of Jack. Jennifer leaves and is overcome with emotion… and that’s when Daniel finds her. He lends a sympathetic ear, allowing her to vent her frustrations. Nicole finds them and is very wary. Once alone with Jennifer, Nicole is blunt: Jennifer hurt Daniel horribly once and if she cares for him at all, she’ll let him heal and not draw him in now that she’s alone. Daniel feels Nicole’s baby kick. The moment is interrupted by Brady’s arrival.
Sami gets a nasty reminder via Kate that the way she bounces from man to man has left a lot of wounded exes in her wake. She resolves that Rafe has moved on and deserves to be left alone. When EJ shows up at her door, she tells him it’s time they picked up where they left off, and they make a romantic date for the next night.
EJ spends the day multitasking – on the one hand he is prepping for a romantic evening to win over Sami and on the other, he is starting the ball rolling to take legal action to get custody of Nicole’s baby. These two agendas come together as EJ plans to use Rafe’s alleged paternity – a likely deal-breaker for Sami – to take his rival out of the running for her affections. Nicole confides her feelings for Daniel to Rafe. He encourages her to be honest with Daniel – the secret they share about her baby’s paternity could be threatened if Rafe, Nicole and Daniel start keeping secrets from one another. Nicole calls Rafe on his growing feelings for Sami. She encourages him to take his own advice, to be honest with himself and go after what he wants. Later, Rafe shows up at Sami’s, hoping to talk her out of her date with EJ.
Sami puts Will in the loop about her possible reconciliation with EJ. Will is reluctant to give romantic advice but he cautions his mother to look before she leaps. Later, Will finds out from T that Sonny is interested in him. Meanwhile, Adrienne is dismayed when Sonny reveals he has feelings for Will. Melanie bristles at the men in her life -Chad, Daniel and Brady – who are being too overprotective. Daniel finds out Melanie is engaged to Chad, and does his best not to flip out, even though he fears the engagement is a knee-jerk reaction to Nick’s parole. Jennifer and Brady both ditch their group grief counseling session, and end up consoling each other over a friendly snack.
Sami reacts to Rafe’s declaration that EJ is not the man for her. Sami, inwardly hopeful, asks who Rafe thinks she should be with if not EJ. Rafe, unable to acknowledge his feelings for her, blurts no one. He suggests to an offended Sami that she concentrate on her kids. Sami insists reuniting with Johnny and Sydney’s father would benefit her children, but Rafe disagrees – she and EJ are toxic together. Plus, EJ will never change. He will always be working an ulterior motive. Sami points out Rafe doesn’t want her to be with EJ – but at the same time, he doesn’t want her, either. So what is she supposed to do? Rafe is hit and starts to leave. But then, in a surprising moment, he pulls Sami into a searing kiss. When they finally come up for air, both are stunned… and Rafe quickly exits, leaving behind a bewildered Sami. When EJ finally shows up for his date with Sami, he asks if she’s ready to go… and she hesitates.
Sonny questions Adrienne about her negative reaction to him saying he has feelings for Will. She explains that while she adores Will, she feels like he comes with too much baggage – namely his parents. She also feels that with all of his issues, Will isn’t ready for a relationship. She’s privately relieved when Sonny admits Will rejected him. Meanwhile, Will finally gets T to reveal that Sonny is into Will and was never with Brian. Will heads over to the coffee house, where he tries to clear the air with Sonny, but he’s interrupted by Chad, who tells them about his engagement to Melanie and asks them to be groomsmen. Chad realizes Melanie might ask Gabi to be in the wedding and quickly leaves. Will finally confesses to Sonny that he thought he and Brian were a couple – but T set him straight. Sonny freezes, wondering what else T told him. Will indirectly lets Sonny know he’s aware that Sonny likes him – and Will feels the same way.
Gabi meets Nick at the pub and is stunned to realize who he is. Nick is straightforward with her and earnest in his desire to prove he’s a changed man. Gabi is affected. Also, Bo learns Caroline hired Nick and supports her decision. Melanie shares her good news with Abigail and Gabi, asking them to be in the wedding. Stuck, Gabi is forced to accept the offer. Chad rushes in and pulls Gabi away from the girls, telling her there’s no way she’s going to be in the wedding. It’s over. At the same time, Abigail and Melanie stop by the pub. Melanie is unsettled when they run into Nick and learn he is working there. Chad and Melanie celebrate their engagement with EJ. Chad asks his brother to be his best man.
Rafe is churning inside, not sure how he feels in the aftermath of the kiss he shared with Sami. He makes an attempt to vent his frustrations and talk it out with Brady but remains just as torn as before. Meanwhile, EJ gets an unwelcome surprise when Sami tells him she can’t go on their date. She’s flustered off kissing Rafe and makes up an excuse that doesn’t hold water. EJ quickly realizes this is about Rafe. His temper flares but he quickly reins it in, claiming he can be patient. Once alone, however, he reveals his true rage. He finds Rafe and challenges him… and the men look ready to duke it out over Sami.
Nicole hates the idea of Jennifer and Daniel working together and does what she can to derail them from getting any closer. She tells Maggie that Jennifer isn’t coping well with Jack’s death and suggests Maggie take her out of town on a vacation. Maggie shoots down the idea. Meanwhile, Daniel impulsively intervenes on Jennifer’s behalf with Anne and later, when it gets back to Jennifer, she overreacts, with Nicole’s lectures about staying away from Daniel ringing in her head. When Nicole hears how Jennifer jumped down Daniel’s throat, she nearly jumps for joy. Seizing the moment, Nicole manages to turn comfort into something more and kisses Daniel… just as Jennifer decides to seek him out and apologize.
Chad threatens to expose Gabi for what she did to Melanie if she doesn’t get herself out of the wedding. Gabi finally stands up for herself, telling Chad that if he does tell Melanie the truth, it’ll inevitably come out that he’s known for a while and kept it from her. Gabi opens up about how she felt about Chad, saying she felt led on to a degree. She takes responsibility for what happened but it wasn’t all completely her fault. Chad is left having to let Gabi continue with plans to be a bridesmaid. When Melanie comes home, she tells Chad how Maggie thinks she’s only marrying him as a reaction to Nick’s return. Melanie assures him it’s not true: she’s with a loving, honest man and she wants nothing more than to marry him. Chad stuffs his guilt.
Will and Sonny finally realize they’ve been working at cross purposes and are attracted to one another. They’re full of anticipation for what’s next, both resolving to take things slow.
