The Melody Thomas Scott Interview – The Young and the Restless

© JPI Studios

If you have been witness to the recent episodes of The Young and the Restless you are seeing one of daytime’s treasures, Melody Thomas Scott, (Nikki) showing her acting chops in the most compelling storyline currently on the number one soap.  Finally after a long drought, fans are getting to see Nikki Newman fall off the wagon…big time!  And who doesn’t love this socialite housewife hitting the bottle?  We all love Nikki when she is seemingly falling apart at the seams. But why? Answer: because no one does that better and with more gusto on daytime then Melody.

This week, Victor helped get Nikki to rehab after finding her drunk as a skunk and in bed with dastardly Deacon Sharpe… a fait accompli created by gold digger Meggie, and her willing accomplice, Mr. Sharpe.  Now, as Nikki begins to finally conquer her demons, who should show up and admit himself into the clinic of the rich and famous? Deacon! So it looks like Victor Newman may have a battle ahead of him, not just with his fiancée’s bottle of booze, but for her affections as well.

And, the players in this storyline are a treat, too. From Sean Young’s (Meggie) crafty villainess without a conscience, to Sean Kanan’s (Deacon) delectable bad boy, to Thomas Scott’s tour de force, they have put the fun back in daytime with drama to boot! On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Melody for a short “quickie” interview this week during her hectic taping schedule to quickly get her thoughts on boozing Nikki, her new co-stars, and her upcoming real-life memoir. Here’s Mel!

MICHAEL:

Fans are thrilled to see a boozin’ Nikki again, as you play it to perfection.   We almost got to see her go off the wagon almost a year and half ago or so during her break-up with Victor when she went searching for him on the beaches of Mexico!   But that did not pan out.   How did you feel about the false start, and now getting the opportunity towards the end of 2010 to sink your teeth into a real battle of the booze for her?

MELODY:

I was thrilled to see this story reappear.  It has been written so beautifully, touching on so many honest moments.  It has been a joy to play.

MICHAEL:

Back in 1991, Nikki checked into a rehab facility to help her with her demons, and now in 2010 she is going back to rehab this week.  How would you compare the two?

MELODY:

Actually, we never saw her in rehab the first time.  She simply woke up one morning sober, with no mention of rehab, AA, counseling, nothing.  That’s why I am so happy to deal with her alcoholism in a more realistic fashion this time.  Better late than never!

MICHAEL:

Your two Sean’s have given Nikki a lift and a new lease on a soap life that fans are loving!    How is working with Sean Young?   The two of you are dynamite in scenes together.   Then, there is this magnetic chemistry that has developed with you and Sean Kanan.   How is Sean K to work with?

MELODY:

Ah, my two Seans!  I am so happy to have both of them to work off of.  Every now and then, the casting, actors and writers happen to click beautifully.  This is one of those times.  I adore both of them!  This story would not be the success that it is without them.

In your heart of hearts as an actress, would you like to explore a real on-screen relationship with the character of Deacon Sharpe? Or, do you think it would be more interesting to play out the next part of the Victor/Nikki romance?  Or, do you feel it’s, “been there, done that”?

MELODY:

Why can’t she do it all!?  Let’s face facts:  Victor and Nikki will always be a huge dynamic, they’ve been in a circular cycle for over 30 years!  Finding a new leading man that you have chemistry with is like finding gold.  My pockets are hanging pretty heavy with gold right now!

MICHAEL:

What do you think Nikki would do once she finds out of Deacon’s duplicity and conspiring with Meggie?

MELODY:

Who says she’ll find out? Or when?  Or: Deacon truly starts to genuinely like her and sincerely falls in love?  There are so many possible outcomes!  We are all wondering what will happen on the set, too!  You are not alone…

MICHAEL:

How come of all the soap actresses on daytime, viewers always think you play a lush better than anyone?  What do you think makes it so raw and real?

MELODY:

That is so funny, Michael!  You’re not the first to tell me that!  Everyone seems to love a drunk Nikki, me included!  It gives Nikki a chance to not be so uptight and snooty.  It definitely brings her down a dozen notches, and I think the viewers love to see something like that.  She has flaws, she’s human, seemingly has everything anyone could want…but she’s falling.  Hard.

MICHAEL:

You and your husband Ed Scott, producer B&B, just celebrated your 25th wedding anniversary.  How have the two of you maintained a successful relationship?  What tip would you give to other couples who have stayed together a long time?  Many marriages in Hollywood fall apart when both spouses are in show business.  But the two of you have made it work.

MELODY:

Sense of humor, commitment, sense of humor, love, sense of humor, surprising each other, sense of humor.

MICHAEL:

Your new book that you are writing, is it more of a memoir?  We have read that it will include the issue surrounding your abuse as a child actress.  How is that coming along?  I am writing a book with someone and I know it is hard to go through and put down someone else’ startling or difficult personal accounts.

I think of it as an autobiography.  It is about my life.  All of it.  Some parts of it flow very easily, some become so emotionally difficult, I have to hold off for a while.  I am very grateful to have my shrink for emotional support while writing this.  She is one of the few people on the planet that knows everything about my life, my past.  But it feels good to finally get it on paper. It truly is cathartic.

MICHAEL:

If you were to name the top three storyline of Nikki’s, would this new battle with the bottle be included? What to you are personally the high points?

MELODY:

Yes, this would definitely be one of them.  Although I can’t say I enjoyed it, the stripping storyline was significant, and the start of what turned out to be a major love story that continues to this day.  I also, going way back now, enjoyed the Crazy Edward story, where Nikki had a stalker who loved/hated her.

MICHAEL:

All of us in the soap industry know that if there is one actress out there deserving of a Daytime Emmy, it is you.  Will you toss your hat into the competition this year for these great performances?  Or, are you over Emmy?

MELODY:

Well, thank you, Michael.  We’ll see.  It’s so political, and that ain’t me.  We’ll see…

MICHAEL:

In closing, what would you preview for fans to watch out for in the coming weeks for Nikki? More booze? Ending up on a celebrity rehab show for the rich and famous?  Falling in between the sheets with Deacon over and over?  A real wedding to Victor?

MELODY:

Seeing as I have nothing to offer, all of the above sound good to me!  Only the great Maria Bell knows for sure!

I hope the end game is not for Nikki and Victor to reunite. He is an emotionally vile abuser who is incapable of making Nikki or anyone happy. I hope they find a new relationship for Nikki. While Nikki and Deacon have tons of chemistry I don’t want to see her in a relationship with a man who spiked her drinks and contributed to her relapse. That makes him a slime ball and even falling in love with Nikki for real won’t change that.

Yes Nikki & Victor are the “Endgame” and I hope it stays that way,yes Victor is abusive/controlling ,but what men/women character isn’t on the show, they just do it in a different way then Victor, but Victor Love’s Nikki deep down,I just hope the Y&R writers writer a story about Nikki & Victor working out their past/present problems and I mean the Verbal Abuse part and other things!

victor is a abuser and has always abused nikki and hurt her. the couple of victor and nikki is just sick and digusting abuse does not equal love.plus most of the fans told care about nikki and victor being is couple any more. nikki and deacon has tons of chemistry something that nikki and victor are missing. i think nikki and deacon should be given a shot. the writers already stated the redeeming deacon.

Well, I really don’t like this Nikki story, because I find it upsetting to be so cruel to someone for the sake of money and with Meggie, wanting Victor. I really don’t know why the writers’ brought her back for this story. Personally, I don’t think Sean Young is that good an actress. She seems to be sleepwalking half the time. Sean Kanan is okay for that part. I really thought in the beginning of this story that he was going to help Nikki. That would have been a better twist, I think. Victor is Victor with an ego to go. Do you believe that he cares for his family or for his companies? Not sure……..

Michael I wished you would have asked Ms. Scott why she wasn’t on the show for so long and only made a few appearances before this storyline began. The only person who tried to get some sort of answer out of Ms. Scott is Michael Logan. Next time can you ask her why she was not shown for months or if you interview Maria Bell again?

Try Nikki with Eric Roberts. That would score on so many points. He has not been with anyone else and therefore uncomplicate the moral issue that is so prevalent in the Nikki/Deacon hookup. And Vicotr already hates him.
